Literally grabbed a troupe and death jester last week to dip my toes into the harlequins as a whole. Excited to start with a kill team before expanding out. Perfect timing and great content as usual!
John, really making me want to buy and paint YET another team. Looking forward to seeing you and playing with you next weekend in Vegas. Kell Team will take it all.
Never got why they are called "clowns" by the community. Actual Harlequin was kind of light hearted character (as opposed to more serious Pierrot) of French commedia dell'arte but not exactly what we would consider a clown. Jester would be a bit closer to an alternative if someone wants to avoid the longer name. Maybe a mime? Wikipedia even mentions how "As developed by Joseph Grimaldi around 1800, Clown became the mischievous and brutish foil for the more sophisticated Harlequin, who became more of a romantic character." So these two are quite separate. Thanks for the summary!
Really appreciate that you made a section about bad matchups. Anyway, Warpcoven also can optionally do 8 Operatives if you do 3 Sorcerers, 1 Rubric and 4 Tzaangors
Great content as usual! 😀 Also great timing because I was trying to learn Harlequins.. I wrote a long comment with questions before finishing the video, and everything was answered in "Guide Overview" 😅
@@CanYouRollaCrit it was about when to use blades as it seems the most balanced "standard" choice (pun intended 😛) and about starting off with Tragedy to move up the map.
@@CanYouRollaCrit as a followup question actually, how would you build 2 boxes of harlequins, this suggestion I found on reddit seems reasonable.. what do you think? 1x Lead with Power Sword/Shuriken 1x Lead with Power Sword/Fusion 1x Player with Kiss/Fusion 1x Player with Kiss/Neuro 1x Player with Blade/Fusion 1x Player with Blade/Neuro 2x Embrace/Shuriken 2x Kisses/Shuriken 2x Blade/Shuriken
As someone who mostly plays Harlequins against elite teams, they are strong/high-tier, sure, but I don't find them overpowered at all. Their low wounds and reliance on close range/melee makes them really vulnerable once you commit. If a marine charges you you are basically dead. If a legionary sorcerer casts a spell on you, you are dead. If you cannot roll two crits with a Kiss in melee, you are dead. Any marine shoots you with bolter discipline, you are dead. Their "game breaking" abilities such as Fly help them a great deal to avoid losing initiative, and you need that, if you are put on the defensive with Troupe you are dead. I think the reason for their high winrate is that they are really good against horde teams being able to instadelete models on a crit and that they are able to hold their own against elites.
I mean, if you're letting your Quins get charged, you've done something wrong. They have enough re-rolls and tricks to get around elites, they suffer far more into hordes
Thanks for the video. I really like it when you spend time on a team, although I prefer the format when it is you discussing it with someone else so there are more perspectives. I thought it was interesting you do not mention blades as a good choice. To me that extra die from balanced just gives them so much more reliability. But I am no expert (in KT or this team in particular) so I was wondering if you could give your view on them.
@@CanYouRollaCrit Ah ok - seeing them as the standard loadout makes sense. I guess that may seem obvious to you, but I was not so sure. Not sure why, but it feels in this review you seem to assume the person listening knows a bit about the killteam already whereas in the others I have listened to you really went through everything from the ground up. But maybe I am nitpicking. It is still an awesomely useful review. Could you post an example of a roster you use for them?
@@CanYouRollaCrit They already have fly. With a free dash they would still take half the board on the first turning point. I think a CP based free dash like with the Hand of the Archon would the fine, though.
How to win with Void Dancers:
Step 1: Put models on the table
Step 2: Domino Field
Step 3: Ignore Terrain with Fly
Step 4: ????
Step 5: Victory points
Truly big brain plays with this team 🧐
how to win with clowns
Step 1: Charge
Step 2: Fight
Step 3: Shoot
Step 4: ???
Step 5: Profit
Not that simple.
Really sweet of you to give your team embraces, kisses and caresses. Your dedication to the hobby shouldn't be understated John!
I'm lover not a fighter
Only thing I'd add to this is being able to keep your Shadowseer on Conceal as his psychic powers and hallucingen grenade can all still be used.
First game with the troupe tomorrow night, thanks for this, with all the nerds it good to have an up to date guide.
No worries, hope it helps (:
Nice breakdown on the weapon choices, I think that's gonna be the biggest learning point for me.
Thanks, it's one of the more difficult parts of the team

Great content. Would be great to have a similar analysis for other factions too, i.e phobos strike team
Will be doing phobos as a podcast next (:
This is a great video. I like these videos where you go more in depth with a team. I learned a lot watching this. 👍
Thanks, that's great to hear (:

Technically they're space clowns 🙃
I hate that they are called clowns as well. I’ve simply grown to call them clowns because of everyone else.
Really appreciate that you made a section about bad matchups.

Yeah it's really important. Yeah that's a bad match up for them too
This is perfect timing as I built my Void Dancers for learning Kill Team this weekend. Alas, I won't be at LVO, though.
Ah nice, Great to hear!

Blades are the standard so I don't think there's a need to talk about them. You use the other weapons to tech for matchups

Great video. Hierotek Circle when? :P
Thanks! Already did that as a podcast aha
Thanks! Just listened to it :)
So does the 4+ save they have ignore crits? or would they need a crit save 5+ or 6 for a crit hit?
No, it is an invulnerable save as convered in the core rules
How do you reckon they match up against Corsairs? Not a matchup I’ve ever had but I think would be interesting.
Usually beat Corsairs imo

Is this still relevant for the newest edition ?
No, I've done one for the new edition tho (:
@CanYouRollaCrit
So, the review is the guide.
For now, yeah, not doing any full guides till the first balance dataslate
Fair
How about vs Hierotek Circle?
Just like elites but on easy mode mostly
Breachers guide next?? 🙏🥺
Maybe aha
@@CanYouRollaCrit there’s amazingly very few Breachers guides kicking around, unlike intercession, legionaries, etc…
Batman Beyond 🫡

off all the teams this is the only one i flat out refuse to play against.
Oooh, why's that?
They really, really, really need to be nerfed. Maybe they would be fine with just 2 APL.
2 APL with free dash for sure

@@CanYouRollaCrit Yeah, that would be fair I suppose.
Or you could just learn to play kill team? Void dancers aren’t as OP as people think. They just expose newbs. Hard. They have so many bad matchups.
