    The story of Stan Lee’s cameo is even cuter than you think, Kevin Smith: “He was adorable and everything you hoped. We had cue cards up for him because he was 74. They told us 'Be careful with him. He's 74 and could go at any minute.' Stan almost lived to be 96. He asked to include the P.S. with T.S., in which he reveals it was a fake story because he didn't want to hurt his wife's feelings.”

    The funeral they to to in "Clerks" is for the same girl who drowned here. Most of the characters in Kevin Smith's movies are either related to each other, went to school together, or at least know each other in some way. For example, Gil the third contestant is played by the same guy who starred in "Clerks" and played Dante. Both characters have the same last name, Hicks, so they're implied to be brothers or cousins or something as a nod to the fact that the same actor plays them. Trish is the sister of one of the main characters from Kevin Smith's next movie "Chasing Amy," as well as the sister of the girl who hooks up with the douche who claims to be trainer and makes fun of Dante for being out of shape in "Clerks," who's named Rick Derris and is also mentioned in some of the other movies as this huge douche everybody knows. It's easy to miss, but they mention other characters' names in conversation and establish those connections.

    Kevin Smith was the first person to put Stan Lee in a theatrical film. Lee's entire film cameo career basically started here. And I find that super sweet that Captain Marvel paid tribute to that.
    Also the real Stan's girl never got away, they were lovingly married until his wife Joan passed a few years before Lee did. And they were just the cutest couple together.
    I'm really excited to see you do Kevin Smith's films while not all of them hold up as great, and someone's gonna have to help you find his classic and imo best movie Dogma. But Smith's movies are super fun and heartfelt.

    I love the Stan Lee cameo. He’s in it for a brief period of time yet he makes the movie even better than it would have been. This is the movie that made Jason Lee a star. Had “Deadpool” came out around this time, I think Jason would have been perfect for the part. Ryan Reynolds and him are very similar in how they talk, their mannerisms, etc.
    Jeremy London is the twin brother of Jason London who was Randall “Pink” Floyd in “Dazed and Confused”.
    Ben Affleck was also in that movie and he tended to cast as a-holes a lot back then. If you get to see “Chasing Amy” you will love it. It’s my favorite Kevin Smith film.

    Being an actor was actually a dream of Stan Lee's. He got many opportunities to cameo in various things, but never a really good speaking role. When Kevin Smith offered the role in MALLRATS, he thought it was a long shot because Stan Lee was a very busy guy. But in interviews Stan Lee said, when he heard that he had lines he got really excited. When he got to set, he actually requested that Kevin give him MORE LINES. Kevin and him rewrote the scenes to give Stan a much bigger role, and Stan has stated in many interviews that it was the highlight of his life and that Kevin made his long time dream come true. As a tribute to this moment, when they did Stan's cameo in Captain Marvel, they made it the REAL Stan Lee holding a script to Mallrats and practicing his lines on the train. Kevin had no idea and was brought to tears in the theater when he saw it.

    I am always enchanted by you wholesome reactions to things that those of us that were kid's of the 80's and young 20's in the 90's took as normal. And it all starts with the mall...
    Things you should know about malls;
    1. Most cities in the US had multiple malls and each had thier own unique idenities. "Let go to the good mall across town." Where I grew up there were 6 major malls each were vastly different from each other.
    2. Instead of likes or followers of today's social media, you knew your place in the social heirarchy by how many people you "ran" into at the mall.
    3. Parents would totally drop off their teenage kids at the mall for hours, unspervised. Hence the term and title "Mallrats".
    4. What seemed to be "passing your girl/boyfriend around" goes more to the being around multiple friends of friends all the time. Hanging out at the mall meant you were around alot of people all the time. So many times what started as being friends with your girl/boyfriends best friend sometime morphed into romantic relations. And sometimes after breakups best friends asked if it was ok to date your ex. Well good friends asked, bad friends don't.
    I know I have glossed over many other social ramifications of being a mallrat, so l leave it to you to let us know.
    "A slient prayer to Stan Lee"

    Jason Lee is underrated in his ability to deliver shouting dialogue. He's up there with the likes of Tom Cruise, Samuel L. Jackson and Leonardo DiCaprio. The "four way road" diagram in Chasing Amy is prime Jason Lee.
    Almost Famous should be in your list of movies if you haven't watched it already.

    Chasing Amy is next in the order and most people love it. I’m pretty sure it’s his highest rated movie. Personally, my favorite is Dogma. But they are all great through Clerks 2. You can’t go wrong with any of them in my opinion.

  • @BiggestDawgEver
    @BiggestDawgEver ปีที่แล้ว

    Great reaction Mary. I am glad you enjoyed this movie so much. It was my first Kevin Smith film and I wanted to see it when it came out because Stan Lee was in it. Stan had previously done a lot of narration on many previous Marvel based Saturday morning cartoons.
    Other films in this series, in release order are;
    1. Clerks,
    2. Mallrats,
    3. Chasing Amy(Smith's most personal film and kind of a romantic comedy drama),
    4. Dogma (Smith's hilarious diatribe about religion),
    5. Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back
    6. Clerks 2
    7. Jay and Silent Bob Reboot
    8. Clerks 3
    The Clerks series is unoffically known as the "View Askewniverse" after Kevin Smith's production company View Askew productions. The girl dying in the pool is actually mentioned in Clerks. Gil was played by Brian O'Halloran who also played Dante Hicks in Clerks and one of Kevin Smith's friends, Walt Flanagan, had a cameo in line at the comic shop. He also played several different customers in Clerks and would eventually manage Kevin Smith's real life Comic Shop in New Jersey and feature in the reality show Comic Book Men. Many actors appear in numerous films as different characters. Ben Affleck(Shannon Hamilton), Jason Lee(Brodie), and Joey Lauren Adams(Girl in the changing room) all lead Chasing Amy as different characters.

    Kevin Smith made one of my favouite comments about fandom: "Everyone geeks out over someone." Can't recall if it was an interview or podcast, but his point was that everyone, no matter how high they might be in their respective industry, was once a kid and had heroes. Everyone has things they love but can't do themselves. Comic book artists geek out over actors. Actors geek out over singers. Singers geek out over best-selling authors. etc. The great thing about the big, cross-industry conventions is that even the celebrities can meet their heroes.

  • @radicaladz

    The romance dynamics of Chasing Amy are very 90s and probably haven't aged well, but Dogma is a classic and needs to be seen if only for Mr Alan Rickman as Metatron, Herald of the Almighty, Voice of the One True God.

    Little nod to Shannen Doherty's role on "Beverly Hills, 90210", which she had just recently been fired from at the time due to on-set hostility.
    Apparently, that line was unscripted and Shannen's reaction was genuine. It would understandably be a pretty touchy subject for her so soon after.

    Silent Bob saying a line in the movies wasn't supposed to be a thing. It started in Clerks due to a short budget and limited amount of film. The lasagna line that Silent Bob says was supposed to be delivered by Jay but he wasn't able to get it right so Kevin Smith did it himself. It then became a thing for him to make a statement of significance in each movie.
