My favorite part about the examination quotes from the characters is listening to Maxwell's quotes. He was basically the god of the constant before you kicked him off of the throne so he is always giving little tidbits of lore when examining certain things, like how when you kill the special hounds they drop gems, so when Maxwell examines a fire hound he says "I put fire gems in them as a joke". It's a weird mixture of Maxwell being bored, Maxwell being ignorant, or later on, Charlie being a colossal jerk. And probably some influence from Them as well, like I would buy that Totally Normal Trees and anything related to the Ruins and Nightmare Fuel isn't really under Maxwell's control.

So the story of don’t Starve is actually really underrated even by other fans, the animated trailers give alot of backstory and characterization and certain events and bosses clearly allude too a bigger picture while each individual character has their own intricate backstory and personality to suit their design and gameplay. Honestly the story is hard to work out from the gameplay alone but still somehow makes me more invested in the gameplay, I would definitely recommend watching all the animations. Even that’s just the tip of the iceberg to actually see the story for yourself you don’t just need to survive you need to be skilled enough to explore and analyze inspection diolog from important characters, although admittedly most of the proven story happens before the game. Also the original is much more scary and has an actual campaign you could play. Also my username is a very abscure pun on don’t Starve
I personally think that Don't Starve is the best *exploration survival* game out there. The constant is an incredibly harsh and hostile place, but it has rules. You'll die over and over again to being blindsided by a new thing but every time you come back you'll be a little more ready. You'll find one more crock pot recipe, one more weapon, one more thing you can interact with that works to your advantage and eventually given time you can become a master of the Constant to the point where you're cranking out the same kinds of megabases you'd see in something like Minecraft or Terraria. You're encouraged to explore the *mechanics* of the game as well as the world, and it's all the more rewarding because of it.
Well said. It’s also impressive that even the smallest rules you ignore regarding surviving the constant will get you killed no matter how good you are at the game. Sometimes a player gets so cocky they forget they don’t have the resources to build a torch and when night falls right when you are being chased by wolves and you realize you don’t have enough grass on hand, you die because you were a fool for not being prepared for the inevitable darkness
what I don't like about dst building aspect is that it's kinda closed by a pay/time wall, since if you want to make a beatiful megabase, you want alot of skins. in terraria or mc you don't need to buy 5 skin packs to simply BE ABLE to make something cool, all blocks, furniture and walls are accessible to you any time if you can make them.
@@thewitchidolsachika6682 On the one hand, I agree with you there. On the other hand I also accept that keeping the game constantly updated (and dropping some really high quality animated shorts with it) does cost money that very few games can get from just selling the game alone. (I don't know how Deep Rock Galactic does it, they're wizards or something).
You MUST look for the Don't starve animations in TH-cam, especially the character ones, they are great conveying their characteristics/backstory. And are very well made! Glad to see people acknowledging one of my favorite games.
Hey just a quick tip, you don't need both a science machine and an alchemy engine. The alchemy engine can do everything the science machine can do and more.
But opera gx is actually superior. Have been using it for a long time, don't plan to switch. Edit: Can y'all stop with the replies, it's been 8 months, if you hate opera; go ahead, you do you and let me use it. Have a good day and kindly keep your opinion to yourself.
don't worry we all suck balls at it. and yes the 1 free copy was genius. great way to get everyone into it and massively expand the playerbase. give one to your friend who has no money, and they'll convince their friends to buy it, who will gift to to their siblings or poorer friend, the process repeats itself endlessly.
No matter how many millions of times i hear dst footsteps, crackling fires, chopping trees, chomps and chews, whirring of the portal, tip-taps of spiders, dings of items becoming craftable, and hands flying left and right crafting an item, It will never cease to please me
I’ve been playing DST since it launched, and with hundreds of hours across systems, I still get excited watching people try the game for the first time, as well as introducing new players to the game. I hope you enjoy getting to play with this weird little goth campfire insanity simulator.
Dont Starve is like the only Survival Game I can actually survive and beat lol. The lore of how Maxwell bringing Wilson into the constant was one heck of an ride. We gotta agree that Wally, Wendy, And Webber stories broke us.
Every DST character history is depressing, the ones that I think that were the most depressing for me was Wes, the robot one (I keep forgetting it's name) and the cooking guy (there's quite some time I don't play don't starve so don't mind me forgetting the names)
I really wasn't expecting a title like this to be from a player that hardly knows the game. But that kind of just shows how much character it has. Legit, it's a fantastic game.
It's nice seeing someone discover the greatness that is Don't Starve. I started playing in 2012, during beta, and have always loved it. I don't play it much anymore, but whenever I play it again annually, it's always a very fun time. I liken the experience you had to the joy that is experiencing Minecraft again, just getting thrown into a world you know nothing about and having fun learning about it.
Gotta say I'm super glad you are enjoying don't starve sp far, it's definitely one of the best survival games out there... and the fact that there's so much story and personality baked into it is a plus too. When it comes to both gameplay, story, and stressful situations... You guys have only just scratched the *surface* . Literally. I hope you like spelunking... and double spelunking.
i love this game so much, i've been playing it since late 2014 but every couple years ill revisit and get super invested and obsessed with it all over again. i have nearly 200 hours on ds and dst combined, which i'm sure to some people isn't a lot but my most played game on steam is like 250
Maxwell used to be the ruler of the constant (Dont starve single player) In the second game Charlie (the darkness) becomes the ruler. Thats why everyones name starts with a W and Maxwell is a M (upsidedown W) because he used to rule that place. Other fun fact: Wiona is Charlies sister so she gets one free hit from the darkness without taking damage Charlie was Maxwells assistant which is how she got trapped into the constant with him Wendy is Maxwells niece (neat) There is an INSANE amount of lore of the game. Most of which can be found from watching the shorts on Kleis youtube channel
6:37 can confirm The moment I though summer was gona be just fine I died twice and 10% of our base got deleted by antlion (which i was 100% not responsible for)
I don't personally enjoy this game but I will say that WATCHING other people play it is definitely entertaining. I just personally don't like survival games but this is definitely very entertaining to watch. Good video!
I'm still on the fence despite having played it a lot. It's so stressful, unforgiving and you don't really get around to building things which I would love. But it's a fun game to work together with other people and the world is so carefully crafted with all of its mechanics and charm. I just get annoyed when I die too often tbh
when u hear him like growl just run away from ur base as far as you can and then when he spawns kill him by doing 4attacks before running away from this range and let him hit and miss then go back for another 4 hits you could do 3 to play it safe@@ethernetgirl2001
@angyl You mentioned questioning the darkness. To guide you towards a tiny snippet of the lore: The darkness in Don't Starve has a name. And the darkness is linked to Maxwell. He was very important, and in Don't Starve Together, he's still important, but not as important as the darkness. If you play him, and follow the breadcrumbs, you'll learn what I mean. Happy hunting! P.S. If you like Webber, you should know that he can upgrade spider nests and make them his friends. Webber's friends also will be friends to everyone, instead of attacking you guys at random. They'll help keep you safe. P.S.S. Somewhere on every don't starve map is a location nicknamed Queen's Rock. You'll know if you find it because there'll be a whole bunch of spider dens covering a real big area. That area is Webber's safe space. He can chill there if bad things happen to the main base.
Don't starve is my all time favorite game and honestly it makes me really happy to see a video on it. The game is packed with lore & a lot of it can be seen in Klei's youtube channel, they make lore packed animations for every major update/character update that comes out and i really recommend giving them a watch if you haven't yet!
As a dont starve veteran, i always love seeing people discover this game for the first time and see how unique and beautiful it is. Also, if you are interested in the *l o r e* this game has, id definitely recommend giving the solo game a try, and more specifically its adventure mode. And of course definitely watch the animated shorts klei has put out over the years
This game is a master class in game design. And I've been playing it off an on- since 2014. My main save file is 2257 days right now. I lost many before getting a stable one....Oh the tears...oh... Not just one of my favorite survival games, one of my favorite games...period. They keep adding more- so I'm still not done. Despite all of that time- I'd say most of it was spent hording and amassing an army of bunnies to kill stuff.
I'm sorry, but seeing you being new to the game is slightly funny for me because I play as "Wes" for fun and I put the game difficulty settings up as well sometimes XD. I do however know full well what you feel like not knowing anything about the game. By the way. The "Unknown darkness" that you mentioned is called "Charlie". Charlie = the thing that kills you when there's no light. It's a female character with an entire backstory that you can find out about in the animation videos that Klei posts. You can learn a little bit of every character. Edit: There are many mods like "Geometric placement", "Zoom+", "combined status" (it helps show you what seasons you are in and how far the next one is), "craft pot", "simple health bar DST", "show me (origin)" and many more that can help make your life a little bit easier. I personally use the ones that I have mentioned and they help in all kinds of ways. You can also get the "gesture wheel" if you like the little emotes that your characters are able to do. I hope that these will help you with your experience in some way.
Deerclops is a rite of passage for all new players 😂. My advice for how to beat him at a new player (ignore if you don’t wanna know) Get armor (log suits, helmets, or marble armor) and make 2 fire pits a decent distance away but close enough to get the heat from boat, lure deerclops between the 2 and Hold F (Make sure to have a Ham Bar or Atleast 3 people)
Found out about this game about a year ago, when the "From Beyond" update started on Together. Now i play it nearly every day, whether it's after school or weekend. Countless hours put into it and i have no regrets
I stopped playing this out of sheer frustration about a year ago, and I've just begun playing it again and diving into the lore and OH MY GOURD this game has more focus and love poured into it than any other that I've found, and I'm just barely scratching the surface. Welcome to the club dear sir, things are about to get nuts
Absolutely loved this video. I am a veteran Don't Starve player (A mild 3k hours under my belt) and this right here. 8:20 is precisely why I love it. I have been saying this since 2014! I am glad you rediscovered this wonder of a game.
Yeah, I've been saying for years how DS intentionally makes it so you have no safe location, no base or walls to hide behind. In this video he summed it up perfectly by saying "you are never safe because the gameplay comes to you" at 9:44.
@@junova7503It's less about walls and more about death being permanent. You can get invaded or visited by a boss in terraria, but you don't lose anything from it(aside from maybe npcs)
@@easytiger6570 There are several ways to revive after death in DS and even an endless mode. Further, many other games have permadeath. What makes DS unique is not permadeath, it's the lack of safety.
@@easytiger6570 I did not say "survival makes DS unique" nor have I claimed the lack of a safe location is the only thing which makes the game unique. I began by pointing out the game gives you no safe locations. You argued against this claiming this to not be an important point, claiming instead permadeath was more important to how DS functions. I refuted by stating permadeath is not a unique mechanic to DS and isn't even core to the gameplay, focusing again on my original claim. Your last statement isn't wrong but neither does it go against my claim nor support yours, it's just backpedaling and trying to straw-man my claim.
4:40 this is what I want when getting new games. I want to be able to discover new things on my own, and only artificially find out thinks I never would have.
I can't get over terraria being equated to a survival game. It's a huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge stretch. It takes about 8 blocks of dirt to be effectively invincible and never die the moment you spawn in the world.
I used to be obsessed with this game. There used to be this grandpa youtuber who specialized in don't starve and don't starve together and he was a legend
*says a game is an outlier to others in the genre *describes that game in a way that doesn't separate it from any of the other games in the genre at all
I've been a fan of this game since 2013, and I still remember how insanely hard and scary it was at first. It feels nostalgic to see someone experience it for the first (ish) time, so thanks for sharing! And it warms my heart to see new people pick up this hidden gem and discover what makes it so unique. ^^
don’t starve is one of my favorite games ever interesting lore really challenging a small community that is mostly peaceful skill most other games don’t require such as time management and heavy planning and a survival game that actually feels like you’re trying to survive dst requires you to be focused especially during boss fights
really like how the boss of this season essentially helps you negates the hardship of the next, like bearger's drop for surviving cold of the winter, dearclop's drop for surviving the rain of the spring, moose's drop for surviving the heat of the summer, dragonfly's drop(technically year round) for further ease of survival for winter
The best part of dst videos such as this is that all this discussion, beholding, and praise of the game and everything it does… is for like 30% of the entire game. There is SOOO MUCH CONTENT and the effort and fun goes up and up and up, difficulty never truly slowing down (until its day 9999)
Yeah, Minecraft and Terraria aren't survival games, they're sandbox/adventure games with a few survival mechanics that are immediately forgettable. The problem with the survival genre is that most game developers only make them for budgetary reasons, and the more of a budget they get, the more they develop into something else because hardcore survival games don't really appeal to a general audience. A great example of this is We Happy Few, another procedurally generated survival game which was crowd funded for a while, the developers even said they made it a survival game because it would be cheaper, then they started working with the publisher Gearbox and had the money and resources to expand the games narrative at which point the focus shifted away from hardcore survival. Klei Entertainment is different because they always intended to make a survival game, even though DST is more forgiving with death it still isn't free to revive.
I do really love don't starve but honestly the newer content hasn't been doing it for me, something about it just isn't fun for me but I'm very glad a lot of people are still falling In love with this game.
please continue playing this game, it has so much more to it! It has a ton of bosses, each character is a different experience and the lore is amazing. It is my favorite game of all time.
Great video, as someone with over 1000 hours in this game this was quite funny to watch. The constant (that's what the Don't Starve world is called) makes it very clear it hates the player by the amount of danger at every corner. Watching this video reminded me of the huge difference in how beginners vs. experienced players handle everything the game can throw at one. One of the best parts about this has to be the fact that the skill gap doesn't stem from very precise inputs but rather knowledge and good planning.
My favourite bit of the video was just getting to see you learn the game as someone with about 1k hours in dst and 100s on ds I forgot how wild the experiance can be for newer players. Keep up the good content bud!
Had a server up for a few months years ago that the caves had half of the exists leading to another cave and half of the other caves exits went to a different over world map. Most players that stayed on my server got lost for days near the beginning. They would come out in the wrong over world and struggle their way back to the Florid Postern, but the starter base wasn't there. It was in the server description that the server had two of each map. One would think that exiting into a cave from a cave and the new cave having an ocean would have gotten some people to read the server description, they did have to pass the server description to get the discord info.
Wow. I found this video like a week ago, found another one of your videos, and now I’m waiting for your next one after watching all the others. I love your video format and style! It’s actually so refreshing to watch, given the state of content… can’t wait to watch more :)
My daily routine is: -Wake up -Do chores -Eat -Play Don’t starve/together -sleep -repeat No joke btw, I have been addicted ever since and I feel don’t starve is HEAVILY underrated
My favourite thing about this game is that its like a universal experience to die on day 2 of your first playthrough to the darkness, or a single frog, or eating the wrong mushroom. And then you discover that this game goes DEEP. there is so much content and lore hidden in it.
DST lore is very obscure, in the old days you wold need do things like photoshop singular frames from trailers or posters to get a link. sadly a loot if this is lost and as far as i know there ins't a complete source. -the character names stating with W was originally a coincidence turned in a internal joke btw maxwell in the game code is "waxuell" and in the lore is just his stage name, his real name is William. as starting point i strongly recommend the character introduction (and reworks) even to people not interested in lore. some tips: -read the character specific crafts they hint the mechanics and play style. -as fun it is mess around with new character i strongly recommend stick to one until you get the hang of dst core mechanics and loop. -I also recommend avoid certain characters as their mechanics deeply trnaform their play (wes, wanda, wormwood, warly) if you wish i can elaborate more on each character spoiler free or not
As someone wwho has played quite a bit, you could just learn anything by trial and error and if you do I'll just leave a couple of tips: Learn how to kill butterflyes (and what ctrl+f does) Play less feard of the night (try playing like a nomad for some time) Explore everything and learn how to kite and kill everything
I've had this game since it came out, didn't play much of it initially till recently. Love playing it with friends, has to be the game we've had the most fun in years. I'm glad it has such a loyal fanbase even after all these years
12:12 Maxwell's not his real name. His real name is William. Wigfrid is the only one that might have a name that doesn't start with W, as Wigfrid is a stage name.
My friend gave me this years ago because she wanted someone to play with, we played a lot but I was never good and she was always doing everything/knew everything
As someone with over 1k hours who was following and playing the game before RoG dlc - i'm really happy to see you guys find joy in this game and even how harsh it is. Many new people i try to get into the game quite quickly get discouraged or try to get to the 'cool stuff' while ignoring survival aspect (therefore they barely play the game) This game is difficult and tedious, but at the same time i think that's why it can bring so much satisfaction. Everything goes against you, so when you do survive and even dominate, you know it's because of your work, skill and cleverness.
Thank you for posting this. Not only did this make me want to replay the game but reminded me why I loved it in the first place. I haven't played in years because I don't remember how to play as well as I used to, but looking back knowing everything was never the fun part. Thanks again.
The first time I played this game, it was all the same that you guys did. Running around clueless and afraid of everything. I really like this game bc with every death, you learn something new. It was a good video. Keep it up!
If there game that is an outlier I would recommend, it would be Rimworld. The game is like if the sims, don’t starve and any tactical rpg were blended in blender. (Which is the weirdest mixed I have ever seen.)
Ahhh dearclops 1st playthrough's ender because by the time they game tells you about him you are at your worst and dont have time to prepare Even tho i watched some people play and knew he was coming i still couldn't kill him in my first playthro
Eh, hes not terrible, but he does have...downsides. like not being friendly with the pigs and bunnies. Being able to munch monster meat freely is nice early on at least.
The gothic, whimsical nature and artsyle not only call back to Dr Seuss's work, but reflects more similarly to a similar work produced around the same time as Suess that was much more grim and gothic: Mervyn Peake's Gormenghast.

what I don't like about dst building aspect is that it's kinda closed by a pay/time wall, since if you want to make a beatiful megabase, you want alot of skins.
in terraria or mc you don't need to buy 5 skin packs to simply BE ABLE to make something cool, all blocks, furniture and walls are accessible to you any time if you can make them.
@@thewitchidolsachika6682 they're just skins lol
@@thewitchidolsachika6682 On the one hand, I agree with you there. On the other hand I also accept that keeping the game constantly updated (and dropping some really high quality animated shorts with it) does cost money that very few games can get from just selling the game alone. (I don't know how Deep Rock Galactic does it, they're wizards or something).
You MUST look for the Don't starve animations in TH-cam, especially the character ones, they are great conveying their characteristics/backstory. And are very well made!
Glad to see people acknowledging one of my favorite games.

Dont Starve To Get Her
Lore is everywhere my friend
I would give so much to play this game again not knowing anything :/
@@viktorhugo1715 Your right about that, Each one has their own depressing story. Makes sense why Maxwell picked them all!

Don't Starve is just like life. We are all dogs in Maxwell's hot car.
i love this game so much, i've been playing it since late 2014 but every couple years ill revisit and get super invested and obsessed with it all over again. i have nearly 200 hours on ds and dst combined, which i'm sure to some people isn't a lot but my most played game on steam is like 250
The first time you meet deerclops really leaves a mark
The parachute gif caught me there to give a chuckle. Need that as a gif for memes XD
already on it
Maxwell used to be the ruler of the constant (Dont starve single player)
In the second game Charlie (the darkness) becomes the ruler.
Thats why everyones name starts with a W and Maxwell is a M (upsidedown W) because he used to rule that place.
Other fun fact:
Wiona is Charlies sister so she gets one free hit from the darkness without taking damage
Charlie was Maxwells assistant which is how she got trapped into the constant with him
Wendy is Maxwells niece (neat)
There is an INSANE amount of lore of the game.
@@LibraryofAcousticMagic3240no point building when deerclops is just gonna fuck it all up lol

Wickerbottom feet tab is downright diabolical
As someone who knows what there doing in dst it’s really great to see new people enjoying the game, the community welcomes you.
Despite all of that time- I'd say
most of it was spent hording and amassing an army of bunnies to kill stuff.
My advice for how to beat him at a new player (ignore if you don’t wanna know)
Get armor (log suits, helmets, or marble armor) and make 2 fire pits a decent distance away but close enough to get the heat from boat, lure deerclops between the 2 and Hold F (Make sure to have a Ham Bar or Atleast 3 people)
Found out about this game about a year ago, when the "From Beyond" update started on Together. Now i play it nearly every day, whether it's after school or weekend. Countless hours put into it and i have no regrets
Zomboid is the closest one to this that I can think of.
Nice videos man! I'm sure you will create videos for a living if you keep up :)
as a dst player i love watching when fresh bloods are suffering in the game
@@junova7503 Just as there are many games with focus on survival, what makes don't starve unique is the vibe

I can't get over terraria being equated to a survival game.
It's a huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge stretch.
It takes about 8 blocks of dirt to be effectively invincible and never die the moment you spawn in the world.
Terraria is very much more along the lines of a boss slaying adventure game. Going out of your comfort zone to explore the unknown.
in minecraft you can dig a hole in the ground and never die because hunger doesn't deplete when you're staying still

I used to be obsessed with this game. There used to be this grandpa youtuber who specialized in don't starve and don't starve together and he was a legend
*says a game is an outlier to others in the genre
*describes that game in a way that doesn't separate it from any of the other games in the genre at all
its separated from the other games in the thumbnail because it feels awful to play
I've been a fan of this game since 2013, and I still remember how insanely hard and scary it was at first. It feels nostalgic to see someone experience it for the first (ish) time, so thanks for sharing! And it warms my heart to see new people pick up this hidden gem and discover what makes it so unique. ^^
don’t starve is one of my favorite games ever
interesting lore
really challenging
a small community that is mostly peaceful
skill most other games don’t require such as time management and heavy planning
and a survival game that actually feels like you’re trying to survive dst requires you to be focused especially during boss fights
really like how the boss of this season essentially helps you negates the hardship of the next, like bearger's drop for surviving cold of the winter, dearclop's drop for surviving the rain of the spring, moose's drop for surviving the heat of the summer, dragonfly's drop(technically year round) for further ease of survival for winter
Bro really called terraria a survival game
pretty much every game were you chop trees is a survival game
The best part of dst videos such as this is that all this discussion, beholding, and praise of the game and everything it does… is for like 30% of the entire game. There is SOOO MUCH CONTENT and the effort and fun goes up and up and up, difficulty never truly slowing down (until its day 9999)
why is terraria in the thumbnail. its not a survival game.

No joke btw, I have been addicted ever since and I feel don’t starve is HEAVILY underrated
My favourite thing about this game is that its like a universal experience to die on day 2 of your first playthrough to the darkness, or a single frog, or eating the wrong mushroom. And then you discover that this game goes DEEP. there is so much content and lore hidden in it.
This got me recommanded at launch and I didn't think it would blow up like it did.
I need a series with all four of you going through this game
This was very well edited!
DST lore is very obscure, in the old days you wold need do things like photoshop singular frames from trailers or posters to get a link. sadly a loot if this is lost and as far as i know there ins't a complete source.
-the character names stating with W was originally a coincidence turned in a internal joke btw maxwell in the game code is "waxuell" and in the lore is just his stage name, his real name is William.
as starting point i strongly recommend the character introduction (and reworks) even to people not interested in lore.
some tips:
-read the character specific crafts they hint the mechanics and play style.
-as fun it is mess around with new character i strongly recommend stick to one until you get the hang of dst core mechanics and loop.
-I also recommend avoid certain characters as their mechanics deeply trnaform their play (wes, wanda, wormwood, warly) if you wish i can elaborate more on each character spoiler free or not
As someone wwho has played quite a bit, you could just learn anything by trial and error and if you do I'll just leave a couple of tips:
Learn how to kill butterflyes (and what ctrl+f does)
Play less feard of the night (try playing like a nomad for some time)
Explore everything and learn how to kite and kill everything

Maxwell's not his real name. His real name is William. Wigfrid is the only one that might have a name that doesn't start with W, as Wigfrid is a stage name.

I love your content, editing style, and most of all, taste in games. I really hope you continue making videos, I'd love to watch them all
As someone with over 1k hours who was following and playing the game before RoG dlc - i'm really happy to see you guys find joy in this game and even how harsh it is. Many new people i try to get into the game quite quickly get discouraged or try to get to the 'cool stuff' while ignoring survival aspect (therefore they barely play the game)
This game is difficult and tedious, but at the same time i think that's why it can bring so much satisfaction. Everything goes against you, so when you do survive and even dominate, you know it's because of your work, skill and cleverness.
I think youd enjoy a Minecraft mod called "Better than wolves" its the most intense survival experience Ive ever encountered.
