Dear me! _That_ is what a leader is! Confidence, clear thinking, poise, arguments with real substance rather than emotional appeals and manipulation. She completely controls this interview, and she does it while expounding and defending the essence of her policies rather than using cheap media tricks. Truly inspirational! How did we get from Maggie to the clowns of the last decade plus? And where is a politician like that now, when GB needs it most?
She literally never flaps. I’m sorry but Margaret Thatcher’s intellect and knowledge of the country came at you like tsunami and just didn’t stop. You compare this to modern day politicians and the difference is staggering.

To think this was at a time when women didn’t hold these positions, and she was already heads and shoulders above the rest, even when compared to everyone who followed. People like her come along once in a lifetime.

There was a perfectly legitimate leadership contest which she didn't win. All prime ministers are dependent upon parliament and if they can't command the confidence of the majority in parliament they must go. She had lost that confidence. Prime minister are not directly elected. There was no coup. She was removed perfectly fairly and legitimately.

What a charisma. I am a recent graduate. Ive been through a lot of interviews and I got none. I figure out that during my interview I wasnt convincing enough. I later thought to my self, if I wanted to change my personality and started to be a very convincing person, who should be my mentor. I immediately came up with Thatcher, and surely enough on my next interview I got the job. So I should really thank her. Lol.

You know what I like about this? The journalist asked full, complete articulate questions, and the politician (Maggie) gave full, complete articulate answers. No interruptions and respect when one wanted to add to a statement with “can I come in here” and “your turn”

I can see how she was called the Iron Lady! She was a no nonsense Prime Minister! The UK needs her now more than ever.
Lady Thatcher is sheer class here, calm, erudite and ready with relevant facts and figures on her fingertips (not unheard of in politicians abroad, but well, our place is a tad different). It is also interesting, though not surprising, to see what a different time 1982 was; when the interviewer first introduces the topic of unemployment, he talks about 'men in Glasgow, Liverpool...' It was then, I suppose, much more a man's world than it is today (though the Prime Minister was a woman even in '82). If a journalist ever said such a thing today, we'd have to write the epitaph of his career on Twitter the next day.

As a teenager of the late 80s I hated her and the Tories and now I have become one and think she was brilliant RIP the best leader wee ever had.

I got sent to prison for 2 weeks for none payment of pole tax, went on the dole and it was called bridging allowance, lasted for 6 weeks, my last giro was for £2.50, I tore it up and shoved it back under the counter at the benefits office, I had no where to live at the time too, I was 17/18 walked out the benefits office and in to the job centre, got an interview for a job in pangbourn Berkshire the next day, got a travel warrant for the train had my interview, manager said when can I start, started next day and I've never been unemployed since

Thatcher encourages people to work and not attend JobCentre biweekly, that’s something, as a taxpayer, truly appreciates.
What a lady a true leader
The world is getting less and less of such magnificent leaders today. Her sentences are spontaneously worded, a sign of a clear picture of what she believed in; the path that Britain should take or should have taken. She is always the a manifestation of a true mindset of the Great British leaders of the past.
and that she gave clear and concise answers regardless of her controversial policies thats expected in politics in my opinion but she is honest and not dodging or avoiding answers
More countries need strong, and intelligent leaders like this. Not emotion driven weak leaders.

What's interesting is she constantly talks of competing with Germany. She had vision and ambition, compare that to the PMs that preceeded her who had no game plan, no ambition and no idea of where they wanted to take the country. Boris is one of those - there isn't really a game plan it's just living from day to day. I bet Thatcher is turning in her grave thinking the Conservatives would eventually be led by subsequent jokes.

Dublin Ireland here, it is so refreshing to watch a real-world leader talking such truth, I live in here world in the 80s in London it was amazing time I seen my friend become millionaires and they came from nothing,and to this day even thoe i have had the challenges her legacy still lives on in me I will never stop to improve my life no matter what happens to me, Miss To Margret.
These interviews gleaned information. Now all we have are the bite size gotcha questions and the politician answering their own question.

A resolute and true leader of men. Even her enemies admitted that she was a tough and brilliant Prime Minister.,as an ex miner from during the strike I have to say that most of us miners admired her strength and ruthlessness. We knew she would emerge victorious.

A crucial observation/point. Arguably, her whole premiership could be termed as pre- and post-Falklands. It absolutely and radically changed her public image and level of respect both domestically and internationally.

One part the comment is right on is house prices. If you compare house prices in the North West from 1978 until now with inflation, a house now costs 3 times as much, relative to income/inflation, what they did in 1978. It's one of the reasons that the average first time buyer's house in the UK now costs 9x average salary as opposed to between 2-3x average wage in 1978. Interest rates were higher, which bumped up mortgages but it also let savers earn a ton. Nowadays it's simply much harder to save unless you're living with your parents.
Case in point, a £12000 house in 1978 would now be worth between £200K and £250K. In contrast, £12,000 then is now worth about £70,000 now. If you were someone with a good job in the 80's you raked it in compared to now.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't recall a major station broadcasting a 30 minute conversation with the prime minister. They do quite a lot on the radio but it's not quite the same. Whatever your politics, something like this has to be good for holding politicians to account and allowing them to explain their policies.

It's a rather sad state of affairs. Partly it's the media's fault, they want to catch them out so the politicians don't bother taking the risk. We have gone so far down this dangerous path we now have a U.S president who only reads from autocue and was knowingly put into office with no thought to his mental health with the only objective being to defeat Trump, all aided and abetted by the media.
History has proven that she was right wanting to embrace new technologies of the future like Japan were doing, nearly 40 years later we living amidst a technological revolution delivering unparalleled consumer choice the hallmark of classical capitalism.
Maggie had a grasp of reality & knew her brief. That is more than now in 2020.
How the world needs another Maggie right now. What an incredible woman.
It's not until one looks back until you have a realisation that there have always been problems but Maggie and those that supported her had the guts to make the hard decisions. All we get now is a circus of lies, arguments & self interest also why do any so called solutions consist of just (printing more) & throwing money at problems, (NHS is a prime example). Efficiencies & improvements are brought about by spending what is available wisely and not outsourcing of overpriced services which only make a small minority of greedy business owners even wealthier, while people in need suffer.

Margaret Thatcher was from normal working class family background. She run the country's as if it was her own household budgets/planning . Where as Boris, he had nannies, house keepers etc . Everything's on his plate .
Margaret Thatcher an outstanding leader. Whatevers anyone's option of Boris is, he has done what previous leaders failed to do, get us out of the shambles of the EU. We have reclaimed our own rule of Government democratically elected unlike the unelected Brussels Beaurocrates.

Such a consummate politician whether talking the talk or walking the walk. She turned Britain around from one of its biggest slumps. This interview takes place before the boom of the mid to late 80s, with a minor blip in the the early 90s, but her foundations and legacy led Britain through all of its later prosperity - right up until Brexit harikari in fact. Oh and that interviewer is getting more and more frustrated that Thatcher is wiping the floor with him.
She knew the recipe, she knew what resources are needed for the desired outcome and she also knew that only patience and discipline will get her there.
Could you imagine Angela Rayner or Dawn Butler giving an interview like this? Chalk and cheese, modern day politicians couldn’t hold a candle to Maggie

Both Llew Gardner 1929-1990 and of course Margaret Thatcher are no longer with us, Llew was a familiar face on Thames, as was TV Eye, Llew died very young at 60, with TV Eye replaced the long running This Week series in 1992. This film was a tribute to both of them.

Deja vu watching this in 2022.
Argentina's corrupt military government and crumbling economy in the 80's desperately needed a cause to unite the country. So, nothing better to revive old bitter feelings against Britain and in an attempt to save their own regime Argentina invaded the Falklands/Malvinas Islands. Argentina's generals actually underestimated Thatcher's ability to run a country into war and the rest became history. It is not surprising at all that in the last 40 years Argentina crashed itself to be now nicknamed 'Latin America's next Venezuela'. If instead of Evitas and Cristinas Argentina had just one Maggie it would be a very different country now. If you Brits think she wasn't good enough for you, just look where Argentina is now.
