Billionaire hotelier Mr. Ong Beng Seng had been summoned to court the next day on Oct 4th 2024, charged by the prosecutor on two counts: 1) Abetment of offences under Section 165 of the Penal code - Offering large amounts $$$ of gifts and benefits to a public official in service when not supposed to do so; 2) Abetment of offences under Section 204A of the Penal code - Abetting the Obstruction of justice by making a phone call to inform the public official concerned that the CPIB had confiscated their free flight ticket details and manifest to Doha, Qatar, thereby prompting the public official to take measures to prevent detection of 'bribery' by the CPIB ahead of their investigations by requesting Mr Ong to issue ex-Minister for Transport S.Iswaran with a receipt from his private company for the 'free' flight tickets (including return ticket) to Doha to which Mr Iswaran paid back in full. Both are equally culpable! It takes two hands to clap.
Quote " trip to Doha, allowing himself to enjoy the all-expenses-paid trip " UnQuote They still do not get it. Iswaran did not fly on OBS private jet because he was hard up and desperate to "enjoy" flying in a private jet. Iswaran did not go there for fun. Iswaran went on the last minute urgent trip because OBS requested it. OBS felt obligated to fly Iswaran to Doha in his private jet - because Iswaran was there to accompany OBS to deal in a serious matter. Where Iswaran in his capacity as Minister lends weight and persuasive power to impress the other party, to deal positively with OBS. A 4 day trip in which 1.5 day was spent flying from SG to Doha and 1.5 day to fly back to SG from Doha. Means Iswaran had only 1 day in Doha to deal in some serious issue. Then he packed up and left immediately. No sight seeing or "enjoying" a holiday in Doha. Iswaran flew back by business class on regular airline. Tickets provided by OBS. Instead of delving into what this important meeting was and with whom in Doha, they talk as though Iswaran went on a luxury "holiday". It was no holiday. To Iswaran, the Doha trip was a burdensome errand that was definitely NOT enjoyable. It was all serious business. To help OBS.
So, you are saying that one of the impt consideration in sentencing is to decide whether Iswaran enjoyed or not enjoyed his trip to Doha?? lol. Is Iswaran working for OBS? OBS requested so he must go?? Being a minister, surely he knows the rules of receiving gifts. Can he not rejected them?? He looks like a dummy to you??
Dear Iswaran sir, stay strong. 12 months is very short and will pass quickly. Singapore prison nowadays is very welfare, food is of course not what you're used to, but its basically like normal HDB cai fan. Just treat this 12 months as a extended holiday paid for by Singaporeans and if you have good behaviour, you might even be let off earlier. Stay Strong Sir! May God Bless you and your Family Abundantly! 🙂
It’s a honour to serve the constituents for 30 yrs. it’s also a pleasure to enjoy the luxury of travels and watching football matches and concerts for the last 8 yrs. After drinking wine I got to trim down by cycling on a Brompton bike.
The jail sentence for each offense is too short ! During LKY’s time, just throwing a cigarette bud carried a penalty of $500/- which was why people thought twice before committing the offence ! Nowadays “cheating” big time like Iswaran only costs him 2 months for each offence ! Only drug dealers kenna death sentence or life imprisonment! Others are so lenient
Charges under Penal code and Corruption Act are different, just like Toyota is not Lamborghini, though they are all cars. As for WEE TB, he got his sentence reduced to 18 mths after appeal, let's wait & see whether Iswaran will appeal or not.
1:08 Speaking of lengthy sentences, that might just be the longest sentence I've ever seen. An easy contender for the prestigious 'most commas used in a sentence' award.
Iswaran didn’t just accept gifts. He actively solicited for gifts. That is undeniable. He should have been charged for the more serious crime of corruption under PCA; it’s the AGC that has doubts that charging him under PCA would succeed. In the public interest I think AGC has, on balance, not dealt properly with Iswaran. This also applies to the DAG, who prosecuted on behalf of AG, when he asked for a light 6-7 mths jail term under the amended charges; the judge’s upping the jail term to 12mths bear this out.
I did a comparison between Iswaran case with Malaysia Najib's. Najib was sentenced to 12 years jail for corrupting RM2.26 billions in IMDB saga. If we convert Najib punishment to S$, it will be about RM2.26b×0.3=S$678 millions; 678000000÷144 mths=taking S$4708333.33 kopi money per mth. As for Iswaran, S$380000÷12 mths=S$31666.67. If I am Iswaran, I think I would rather commit the crime in Malaysia, the amount of kopi $ collected is more worth to be sent to jail.
Cannot comment on this case. One year may seem long for some and short for others. Maybe he can appeal for a shorter sentence or out on a shorter period for good behaviour or repentance. If you are a Christian, perhaps you can consider to do like Paul in the Bible, have full fellowship with Him, when he was jailed or if you are not maybe you can consider reading and get into the Bible and when you are out forgive those who put you in this position. Does not matter whether you are right or wrong, the fact is you are going to jail. To me, it is hard to comment on this case and the outcome because it have to do with politics. To me, politics sound like "poly ticking", there are two many options in this kind of environment, very different from the world outside politics, of actions, reasons, selections etc. Often it just choose the options right for the occasion, may not in concurrent with how the normal society behave. Very complex and hard to comprehend what is going inside this circle. Best not to get in but stay clear otherwise one may end up crazy at the end. This is not the end of your life chapter but after this there could be a new better chapter in your life journey may appear, moving forward from your past history. May you find peace if you choose to engage more with the Bible during your fail term.
See, when he got charged, do you see any PAP member give any comment on him. For example, any testimonials from his superior about his work, characters which might help in his mitigating factor? Any of his peers come out to give moral support. I did not see any of it. But you look at the WP, the leader get into trouble with the law just because he feels the need to assist hus member when his member gets into trouble. I won't say this is right or wrong, but in terms of saying united, help each other when one is in trouble, I see only WP are into this terms, and this action is not by word but by actions. Once again, I respect WP for showing us what is united. Especially, the WP leader is brave and really shows truth leadership. I pity Iswaran, not because of his charge but because he seems to be left alone when the charge stands valid. To me, to return the salary and to inform LHL he had returned, the $8000 salary is really a shame or humiliation or pathetic. Will Iswaran be the last to receive gift? This is a big question mark.
That's not the way to be united. one has to differentiate between right and wrongdoings, not 义气. You give support to the right things, but condemn the wrong. None of the PAP member made any comments, I guess they felt sad, they chose not to rub salt on his wound in the public, I guess they were wishing he didn't make these silly mistakes that somehow obliterated the excellent things he had done for Singapore, he brought in F1, Universal studio, etc and lead Singapore tourism to new heights, it's very sad to see Iswaran end up like this.
The gavel was held up high for months but drop down suddenly and softly (after charges amended), even culprit could still bargain and negotiating for a much insignificant punishments. This is a clear sign that the political morality of the ruling regime is sliding fast in the eyes of general public in Singapore.
The news media should seek to make a feature on him while in prison. To see if he would receive preferential treatment
Good one. Another aspect of public interest.
Should be ten years according to PAP high standard. Zero tolerance for corruption.
I hope you are charged for jaywalking
💯
Correct! Higher you are, the harsher the punishment should be. Besides, getting paid highly is to deter corruption or accepting gifts, no?
Gets 400k, free stay at Changi resort with free food for 12 months.
Received the highest income in the world for the same position still not enough, real rubbish.

Accepted the gift is a form of corruption. Whether you achieved orgasm or not is irrelevant. 😂

SENTENCE WAY TOO SHORT For CORRUPTED SENIOR MINISTER.
Senior Minister? Do you mean LHL? LoL
Big Joke ! 😅 PAP Wayang !
Only 12 months???? WHY ? 😵🤯

Jail and fine lah for public servant. Whatever gifts he was given, he should declare lah. His issue is he didn’t declare.
Considered as a form of tax evasion. Not declaring gifts and favours is deemed a benefit or unpaid gratifications . He may think it is gratis 😮

a lot of the charges were dropped for no reason, he could have served 5 years
It is still accepting a gift although holding public office position
Just have a law on no giving and receiving of gifts so as there is no ambiguity and no need exercise personal discretion.
$400,000 for one year worth it !!!

A Lot MORE NOT Revealed else will be NATIONAL EMBARRASSMENT.
ONLY 5 Charges stuck, 30 not Sentenced
That 80% DISCOUNT
GSS for 4G
@vincecarlo Though DPP raised 5 charges against Iswaran, but High Court judge Vincent Hoong included the other 30 as well for the final verdict
