This calls for a class action lawsuit. They're forced to pay for the plan if they live on campus then forced to give up part of what they pay.

This is all true, and it's been true for a long time. I used to go to Victoria College at U of T (2010-2014). If you live in residence, you're required to buy a meal plan, and typically a student does have a lot of meals left over by the end of the school year. If this was simply due to students not using these meals, that's one thing, but there are more meals in the plan than any student could possibly use.
For me, this wasn't that huge of a deal. But when you think about it, there is at least a lot of debate and transparency needed. The university should at least be clear upfront where the money these students pay is going to, if this is indeed going towards fixing up dining halls, paying staff, etc. If they can't justify it, they should allow students to reclaim these unused meals.

My school had this issue. Students would by their entire dorm floors meals to get rid of the money by the end of the year. Our school recently instituted a program where tou can donate your dining dollars. It isn't a perfect fix since you can't get a refund but now at least the money goes to students who are food insecure or can be used to stock community fridges especially for students studying over the summer.

    • @dianaadamo5574

@@dianaadamo5574 Huh, you're right. I think I meant to focus on the students' choices and not exactly the exchange: they have to pay rent either way but a critical difference between residence and off-campus is the forced meal plan. I think that's not bad in general, especially when the food options in the city aren't anything special (which is not the case at all with Toronto).

Does this not show that the educational systems in Canada are not working . Schools shouldn't be making money off of the kids going there. Parents are also being left out of the opportunity of having a voice as t what their kids should be learning. I'm sure that every parent would like to see their child graduate and become a doctor. That means what they went through was worth the time and money it took to finish school. I believe every coarse should lead to employment but what I hear about university it's the staff and the administration who are raking it in. I believe that the kids are being taught what to think and not how to think. There's more propoganda being taught them wisdom and I don't see the kids growing up attending these schools of higher education.
