- This clip features the Musicians Hall of Fame and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, amazing studio pianist, Spooner Oldham.
In 2004 we drove to Muscle Shoals and interviewed Spooner along with some of the other, original Muscle Shoals rhythm section. We did it at the second sound studio, the big one they built after all their success.
Spooner was also part of The Stray Gators, Neil Young's touring and recording band.

You’re hitting home run after home run with these videos, Joe. Thanks.
Thanks tem.... joe
Yeah gotta agree....that was great with the videos and pics....love it!!....
Here you see the musicians the craftsmen ...Young paid tribute to them...unsung heroes...they do the job without the glory the spotlight the money the fame. They are the bedrock
Spooner's Hammond B-3 on Percy Sledge’s “When A Man Loves A Woman” qualified him for immortality.
Spooner said That's a Farfisa organ on that
@@kevinlewis1017 Thanks.
Mr. Chambers, thank you again. These interviews are priceless!!!
Hi Ernesto.... I’m very happy you’re enjoying them. Best, Joe
My God I hadn't heard "Comes a Time" in years, but when I did the tears began to flow... Thank you Joe. And Neil🙂
Hi Craig... yeah I love Comes A Time too... recorded one Nashville... session guitarist Ray Edenton played on it... best.. Joe
Joe, I really appreciate that you are documenting the stories of these important artists. Spooner played on countless classic records. Thanks for letting us hear him tell his story.
Thanks 6412.... I appreciate it... joe
You are the Bob Ross of interviewers. My blood pressure drops watching your video's.
Hi Charlie... well then just sit back
and relax..... more videos coming your way:)... best.... Joe
@@MusiciansHallofFameMuseum thnx Joe...will do.😉
Love to hear ANYTHING from Spooner. When I watch him, it seems the music just flows from his fingers!! A gift!! Thx, Joe. ❤️
Side note: My Mother was a pianist, too. I watched Spooner’s fingers, and I noticed that neither he nor my Mother had those arthritic joints on their fingers. Wonder if playing has kept those gnarly things away?!!
Thanks for watching Frankie.... I don’t think playing keeps you from getting your anything. They’re just lucky.... joe
Circling back to these videos is a pleasure. I wish Joe was still here making more of them. His knowledge and love of music will be nearly impossible to replace ❤
Thanks for putting this up. I had the pleasure of playing with Spooner in Delaney Bramlett's band. It was an honor to play with such an incredible musician. I can happily add that Spooner is simply a wonderful, kind man. I just love that guy.
Had the pleasure to meet Spooner and Donnie Fritts at a John Prine concert. Super nice guys.
@@derrellthomas239…and Funky Donnie Fritts (Ala Pussing in the Wind)
Another video journey of a great studio musician who just happened to be a part of the Stray Gators and The Swampers. Thanks to all who put this video(s) together.
Thanks again GG..... joe
And the International Harvesters tour 1984. Saw them with Jesse Colter & Waylon opening at Blossom Music Center, Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio - The summer home of the CLE Orchestra.
Yep! The sound acoustics are fabulous. I had my HS Commencement there, too. Gosh, so many memories of that venue (zips lips). 🤐
I love these interviews! It's so important that these musicians are telling their stories. thanks!
Thanks A... joe
Another great interview Joe. Several years ago my wife and I took a motorcycle trip to Deal's Gap. Along the way we pulled into Nashville for lunch and there on the corner was the Musicians Hall of Fame. Of course we checked it out and spent a lovely afternoon enjoying it. At the time you were showcasing Reba McIntyre and had a exhibition on the Bakersfield sound. I was also thrilled to see Webb Pierce's Pontiac which my father had on an Album cover when I was growing up. Definitely recommend this place to anyone. Stay well.
Hi G......... hey... thanks for watching... one small problem... you went to
the Country Music Hall ..... which is great. We use to be across the street from it but the city took my building by eminent domain to build a new convention center which I owned the center of on sixth Avenue. We now are in the first floor of the Historic Municipal Auditorium about 8 blocks on the north side of Broadway on 5th Ave. Thanks again for watching... Joe
Musicians Hall of Fame & Museum now I have a good reason to visit Nashville again. Your place will be my main Point of Interest. Thx Joe.
I look forward to seeing you and family... best, Joe
I got some nice pictures of that Pontiac.
I went to FAME Records this past week. Spooner Oldham wound up on the tour (somehow) with some friends of his. He sat down at the same electric piano that he played ' I Never Loved a Man' and played the iconic entry riff. Living history. What a sweet man.
So far from all the shows I've watched on your program and I've been subbed for a while , I love this guy , man joe he's a real quick witted and a just a joy to listen to, I loved his story about how he's been meaning to get back to his parents basement and put the bricks back in the wall, that piano story was great and it tickled him all these years later, thanks Joe
Thanks for watching Bruce... joe
Spooner, THE MAN. Gotta visit Alabama and see MSS. Gratitude, Joe.
Such a humble, understated guy.
Love these long form interviews. So much better than the rehearsed sound byte anecdotes crammed between ads on talk shows! No agenda to promote anything, just a conversation about great music.
Thanks for watching Jeff.... joe
Thanks for all these clips you show. Did you ever notice the best musicians come from the south???!
Thanks for watching 67..... best, Joe
I think that nils lofgren singing you make me feel like a natural woman. Wonderful footage, thanks for sharing and i m looking out for Ben Keith stuff!
Hi CC... you’re right... that is Nils. Glad you enjoyed it. Best.... Joe
Hi Joe I saw Spooner and Dan Penn play an intimate duo gig in a church here in London a few years back. Spooner was on Wurlitzer electric piano. They were unbelievably good, I had to go back a second night to hear them again
Hi Dean... I’m sure it was great... thanks for watching.. joe
I live for these stories after growing up with the music all the sixties. My first concert Louis Armstrong when I was three at the Shrine Auditorium in Minneapolis. My parents started a love for live music that is still going strong.
Spooner was just more than a backing guy he had so pretty damn good writing chops too.. I think some of his ink was on some of the Box Tops stuff. Crying like a baby ?? Thanks again Joe..
Hi Blue.... yes he mentions writing that song in the interview.... best, Joe
ooops !! Sorry Joe I guess I need to stop watching your videos at 3: 00 am... Thanks Joe.
Me too... always been a night owl since playing in my band. Best time to write too... best, Joe
...and the hits just keep on comin’!
Thank you Joe for introducing me to someone I didn’t know I knew. Spooner is a gem.
Thanks mVm... more coming... joe
Oh dear lord that footage of Spooner on piano with Ben Keith filming and Nils singing is so precious, thank you for this treasure!
You’re welcome... thanks again Francie......Joe
That’s funny you mentioned Niles singing in the background, that’s what I thought listening 👉 Awesome!
Wow that was a lot of fun brought back a lot of good memories thank you

Thanks again for watching Nelly... joe
The addition of the personal videos is great!
Thanks Roxie... joe
I don't know where you get all of this. Are they all your friends? Anyway, Mr Oldham represents my favorite Neil Young period (well, and the start of my favorite period of my life, looking back). It is such a privilege to take part of these interviews all these years later. Keep it up, Joe
Glad you like them Arne..., thank you for watching... joe
The R & B back then had such a feel. There were bits & pieces of it everywhere in all kinds of styles. Jazz, rock, soul & into movie & TV sound tracks. You can still hear it today all over the place. Keith Richards solo stuff has that feel. He talks about Aretha a bunch. Of course he was using Al Green's musicians so, what would you expect. But that was the golden age back then. Spooner's discography is impressive to say the least!!
Buddy.... thanks for sharing your thoughts and watching our channel... joe
@@MusiciansHallofFameMuseum Hey JOE, getting cold here in the mountains . I'm gonna have to get me a MHOF hoodie soon! Christmas maybe. Thanks for your work. I Just had to say 'Hey, Joe!'
Hi Buddy... just got some new ones in... kinda cool ...black tie die ... best, Joe
Thanks Joe. Keep up the good work.
Thanks Bob..... merry Christmas...Joe
GREAT STUFF!!!
Thanks again, Joe!!
Innarestin' how Spooner got his nickname. He played on many Neil songs and with many of his different touring bands including the Friends & Family group. That shows Neil loves Spooner like a brother.
You wouldn't have some Ben Keith (RIP) stuff you could dig up?? 💙
Hi Rick... of course I have Ben Keith... great guy... we have his steel in the museum. Best... Joe .....I’ll get Ben’s interview up before long.
@@MusiciansHallofFameMuseumGood morning Joe! We look forward to 'Long Grains ' interview as soon as you can. Always grateful for your interviews.
@@MusiciansHallofFameMuseum That will be awesome, Joe. Long Grain's soulful sound is imbedded in my heart. Him and Neil had a friendship that lasted decades. I think Neil and L.A. Johnson both named sons after Ben.
Can't wait to see the interview.

Love Neil Young am happy the spouse did video Its fantastic I was.working Daytona Airport saw Neil face to face but I just froze as watched people shuffling him out doorWish I had gotten his autograph
Excellent Nostalgia.
Awesome Joe !☺☺☺☺🎼🎶🎶🎶
Thanks again Star….. Joe
SPOONER is a class act. I drove the DRIVE BY TRUCKERS on many tours, and SPOONER would come out,and play piano. One nite i was driving my tour bus through Florance, hit a deer pulled to the side of the road,to inspect damage, before i could set the brakes SPOONER was at the door asking if i was alright...in the middle of nowhere...go figure....SPOONER didn't mention he wrote I'M YOUR PUPPET...among other hits.
Known of Spooner forever but never heard him interviewed... Great stories and what a career. If you happen to know Mark Narmore, I think they're cousins (another great Shoals writer and friend).
Thanks for watching Wilbur..... joe
Thanks!
Thank you too x2..... joe
Footage of Kenny Buttrey playing is a real treat. Rare as rockin' horse poo on youtube!
Spooner the LEGEND!
Great piece of musical history. The two video clips, 1 of the Stray Gators playing and the other in Neil's Young Ranch say this is 1991 but checking Sugar Mountain it appears to be from 1992 Farm Aid 03/14/1992. Thats the only time I see Spooner/Nils/Nicolette performing with Neil. Also the clip of Spooner playing the piano at Neil's ranch sure sounds like Nil's singing.
Hi Bill... that is Nil’s singing... good ear you have there:)... actually the concert footage was from the1991 Bridge School Benefit concert and the hanging out , playing and singing was at Neil’s ranch house the next night.....thanks for watching.., Joe
So cool 👍🏻😎
Yet another fantastic video Joe! I never knew that Spooner played on so many R&B records. Another example of being born with the innate ability to play an instrument, no lessons needed! Thanks for your videos & stay safe.....👍👍😉😉
Thanks again Steve... joe
Humble genuis and creator
Had no idea there was a connection between Spooner and Alex Chilton, incredible
Thanks for watching Francie....Joe
Bravo Joe!
Thank you Vic... joe
Spooner is laid back cool-
the Buddha of Center Star.
Do you know the title of the Neil Young tune? Thanks Joe
Thanks for watching Gerald... Joe
I think it is called " It comes a time"
Were Spooner Oldham and Dan Penn behind the Boxtops with Alex Chilton records in the 60's ?
Hi Dan ...... Yes... best... Joe
@@MusiciansHallofFameMuseum Thanks Joe, keep up the great historic videos !
Consider the fact that this guy replaced Jack Nitzsche!
Thanks for watching Playpen.... joe
Im going to miss Joe Chambers so much!
Didn’t Spooner write (or co-write) “On The Dark End Of The Street”?
Just googled this for you: Composers were Chips Moman & Dan Penn.
Thanks Frankie.... joe
@@frankiebutler2894 Oh right. My bad.
Spooner is the keyboard version of Jack Pearson.
It's me babe.
I see NILS LOFGREN!
Hi 77..... yes you did!!!!:).... good eye... best, Joe
OH, there's Kenny. heavy sigh.
Suggestion. Why don't you invite Delbert McClinton sometime? Not only is he a great singer with a 60-plus year career but he also wrote lots of hits recorded by major country stars from George Strait to Garth Brooks to Emmy Lou Harris, Vince Gill, etc., etc. Here's Delbert on Austin City Limits some 30 years ago in a spectacular performance. The band's not bad either! th-cam.com/video/q7tFeVLNH5E/w-d-xo.html
