The option to preview the battlefield was invaluable to me. Not for the battle itself, but it was always important to see where villages are, treasure chests and most importantly enemy thieves. I always used it to map out my paths so i could get everything.
I randomly found this series as I was on a Fire Emblem binge personally. Then when I began playing Fire Emblem Engage, I realized just how great this series is to catch me up to speed on the different Emblem Heros in Engage. Due to this series I understood what Lucina was talking about in her Paralogue, and I even recognized several paralogue maps. Which is why I decided to watch the series in it's entirety. These types of videos are a great way to catch people up to speed on long going series.
Wow wow wow. great critique of this game. Very refreshing to have someone look at this series through myopic eyes. The narrative of FE critique/reviews today is a bit of an echo chamber- for lack of a better word. it is rare to get the perspective of an actual individual. Part of me was a little nervous when you announced this series but you really did a great service to the game. I'm buckled up for more going forward.
I'm glad you mentioned the part about the soundtrack/speed of the game I couldn't agree more. This game has one of the best soundtracks ever. Yuka Tsujiyoko does a great job, but you can tell Hip Tanaka had a hand in the actual arrangements.
This was simply a beautiful retrospective. It's so nice to hear your thoughts about the game; which is very close to my heart. I don't normally do shameless self-promotions on other channels, but since you explicitly stated that you like this soundtrack I thought you might be interested. I've remade the entirety of this game soundtrack using GBA samples. Feel free to drop by if you'd like to listen. Regardless, I'm happily anticipating the future episodes of this series. Thank you!
I searched "fire emblem retrospective" on a whim after finally buying Three Houses, and I'm happy to say this is exactly what I was looking for. So excited to go through all of these videos.
I think this may be some of your best work on this channel, and it's only the first entry of this series. Knowing a vague idea of your thoughts on Gaiden from watching the LP, I am very much anticipating the Gaiden video. On this review though, wow. This is perhaps the most well-edited and comprehensive review of FE1 out there. Sure, there aren't many reviews, due to this particular version of the game falling to obscurity in favor of its remakes, but that doesn't take away from the quality of this review. Your opinions are clearly stated and backed up with evidence from the game and a substantial amount of context. And it's all held together by editing that always puts relevant visuals on screen at any given time. I want to especially praise the work on the summary of the narrative. Using the world map and the various visual aids applied to it in conjunction with cutscenes, gameplay and character portraits made the summary clear and easy to follow. Just really great work overall.
Dang you just made me feel like the hell I put myself through on that story section was actually worth it. The minute of play vs. editing time was nuts there and the whole time I couldn't even tell if it was going to be worth it, thank you for making my day with your lovely comment. I plan to have the Gaiden one out as soon as possible, it's my main project this week.

I have loved this series for many, many years. I started playing over 20 years ago and eventhough the newer titles aren't really to my taste, I still enjoy these games. I have watched this series once before and I'm rewatching it starting today. Let me say; thank you for making this series. Your reviews are truly special and very well put together. This is awesome!! I have a lot of difficulty getting into some of these more primitive games, so this is a great way to understand the old games better!
I am very glad I bought thus game on the eShop when it was still available. There was no reason for Nintendo to make it available for only a limited time. Good thing we still have the fan translation for the NES ROM...
Huge FE fan since the first GBA title came out back in the day. You created by far the most detailed and enjoyable retrospectives on this series I've ever seen! Bravo. Instant fan here.
I hope the Nintendo Switch re-release adds a Modern mode where the game runs faster while keeping the music at the original speed and updates the shop to work like the modern games.
Shane, thank you for this video, and I am really excited to see the other episodes in the series. I agree with everything Mr. Minute Rice said in his nice comment above. The time and effort you've put into this really shines through. I have a lot of curiosity for the chapters of the Fire Emblem series that were not released in the US, and it all gets really confusing what with the remakes and the differently translated titles. This one, though primitive, actually looks more appealing than I thought it would be. Gotta love that 80's anime aesthetic. Looking forward to the next chapter!
I was wondering if somebody did review the entire franchise and then, I fall upon your retrospective. I'm really exited to see your thought about all the games

Can't wait to check out the first FE in 3 days thanks to this video. This is such a well done video series, i hope it gets more views with the switch release!
Finished this game an hour ago as I type this, and I gotta say, I found it oddly enjoyable despite how archaic it is, especially with the inventory system. Pretty much agree with you that the inventory sucks and the battles/game itself tends to draug, but it was still oddly satisfying when you seize the castle or throne and lay the final slash to Medeus at the end.
Great video! This game is gonna be released on the Famicom app for switch online next week and im super stoked to try it out! Wont be my first time playin FE in Japanese so hopefully it'll be a fun time.
Since you've gone into efficient item trading algorithms, I have to chime in on what you failed to mention. You can buy more than one item from armory in a single turn. And you can trade more than one item away without moving between items. (You're even able to choose one to equip at the end.) If you take advantage of that quirk by arranging your receivers in a cross shape for your designated shopper to swoop into the middle of - it cuts your shopping back-and-forth to 2 turns per 4 outfitted troops, who get a chance to discard an old item in the first turn and a chance to equip the new item in the second one.

Also, you should have just used the official names from the remake instead of these fan translations. I'm sorry, but it kinda makes the video sound outdated. (Bantu is Tiki's caretaker, not her grandfather btw.)
I thought about which version of the names I should use for a while. Keep in mind that I am going to be making videos on every single one of these games, including the remakes like Shadow Dragon, and I am going to talk about what the official names were when they appear for the first time chronologically. I don't think the first FE is ever going to get an official release, so I want people to hear the names as they are actually used in the game if they played it using the available fan translation. Unfortunately there’s very few FE1 hacks (at least in the US-there may be Japanese FE1 hacks we don’t know about), with most of them being made as jokes. Most emulators have a “speed up” feature, though, and if that isn’t fast enough for you, most of the FE games give you the ability to simply turn off battle animations entirely for MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE SPEED. (Not sure about FE1 as the last time I played it was years ago, but FE2 and all later games definitely have this feature.)

@@TechBear1127 I've dropped FE1 at about 60%. Beaten Gaiden since then. And played through about as much of the first remake as of the original. Still a slog overall, to be honest. Had to put it on hold for now but it feels much more manageable still.

@@TechBear1127 I've dropped FE1 at about 60%. Beaten Gaiden since then. And played through about as much of the first remake as of the original. Still a slog overall, to be honest. Had to put it on hold for now but it feels much more manageable still.
I bring news from the future, in less than 1 month shadow dragon will be re released on switch
I too have the internet
Came here from Mekkah's collab
I had to play this on Nescafe. Slower than usual. No speedup. I got ti chapter 18.
So you just start to make videos of all FE games.. but you didn't have played the already ?
How could you know that you'll find them interesting ?
Coming soon
I swear it was called Shadow Dragon am I mistaken?
That's the remake, FE11.
He clearly said in the video about the whole naming thing. Or was this comment made without watching the vid first?
But why isn't he wearing pants?
