This forgotten 1975 Volkswagen Shorty bus was once a well-known Wheelie Machine in the Houston TX area. After sitting up neglected for over 20 years, the guys dive in to diagnose all the issues that's keeping this cool piece of automotive history from moving on its own power. Been watching since the turning rust days. No matter what happens during the show there has always been positive outlook and their faith never waivers. Nice to see a family who work so well together.

That bus just screams 70's ☮
in 1973 I heard about a 1960 with newly rebuilt engine that kept overheating. He only wanted $150 for it. When I went with him I found that after the rebuild he and his dad failed to put the heat shrouding back in place. I told him that could be all that was wrong. He sold it to me anyway. I towed it all the way back to Arizona from Tacoma with a 73 superbeetle with no problem. Replaced the heat shrouding properly and BAM it drove like a champ and became a daily commuter for a friend of mine.
Great video! Love the ending. A little fun father/son challenge is the cherry on top.

Yes, indeed, the fact that a single port motor is installed in a late model bus is perplexing. Perhaps that is all they had.

I remember my younger brother had a party van. The fridge and tunes was the best part of the van. The engine always had issues as he called it that kept it from runnin. We might not've drove far. But we always had one hell of a good time partin in the hippy van!! Long live the Hippy Van!

The hard start before she started idoling was because of the electronic ignition it had to reset the timing lucky you didn’t have points to fight with. Great job thanks for bringing her back to life

Sorry, but I was rooting for Dad in the wheelie competition, and he did not disappoint! That looked so much fun. Whats funny is, its such a small engine, I bet you could get around on a gallon of gas for a couple hundred wheelies! Gonna be a hard vehicle to part with, so many great Dad/son memories got made.

So here's my idea on making it wheelie better.. Have your dad sit in the back seat as you drive and try that. The extra weight in the back may allow the front to come up a little easier.

You guys are correct, a 75 bus should have a 1699 twin port motor. Someone put a H Code single port 1500 in there that appears to have been mildly worked. Nothing wrong with that though, as many regard this as the better motor and it will have plenty of power on a shorty.
I'd suggest the sooty plugs are a timing issue.
I hope whoever ends up with this bus preserves the cool paint and patina!

Speaking of Puddin. I'd love to see Puddin give Lance some pressure washin tips! 😱 I've seen so many videos where after they get "it" runnin. Lance drives to the car wash close by. TR, if you have an old VW Idiot's guide you'll find a setup that incorporates a Ford pickup truck starter solenoid that shortens the circuit to the VW starter. I have installed several and my current 66 Bug converted to 12volts has that setup and starts every time using the original ignition switch rain or shine. Great project and video!.

I grew up inHollywood Florida and in the next townNorth of us we had a independent VW Repair shop that mostly in the 70s and into the early 80s specialized in Air Cooled Volkswagens they actually had a shortenedBus they used as a Shop Truck it was so short that the driver could reach the rear window from the drivers seat they also had it that at almost every red light they could pop the front tires off the ground for a short period i had a 72 SuperBeetle that the same shop had done a lot of work on for the previous owner i bought it from it was a very rusty old SuperBeetle when i paid a hundred bucks and a set of used car tires to a former CoWorker that knew very little about Cars and at one point he took house paint and repainted the OriginalVW Green to a Brown without doing any body work or repairs it also was leaking oil like crazy and had 2 SparkPlugs dangling by the wires because the threads were completely stripped out but some how the car poorly was running well enough for me and a freind to drive it home about 6 miles in the dark the next day i fixed the sparkplug threads by installing a Heliocoil kit and screwing the Plugs into the heads i did wind up pulling the motor and with a $112.00 Brazilian made refresh kit i bought at my local auto parts store that included 4 Pistons 4 new Rods ,Rings and all new Gaskets i broke the motor apart and put that kit in plus cleaned the filthy oily thing up and the damn thing ran good without any leaks ! my sister needed a car and i gave it to her not only did she drive it for 4 years beating the hell out of it she wound up giving it back to me and i pulled the engine that same motor has been in many VWs and 35 years later it’s still running in some Aircooled VW car in that area BTW the VW Group from that era are still a pretty tight group and actually one of my best freinds Uncles was a VW Certified Dealer mechanic in the area for 40 years i personally did get into the Water Cooled VWs starting with the first generation Carbureted 1975 Rabbits and several more of the Bosch FuelInjected ones into the early 80s several of which my freinds Uncle sold me because he picked them up very inexpensively through the Dealership one of which was a 2 Door Rabbit with a blownheadgasket i put that one together and put a lot of miles on it untilllmit eventually spun MainBearings

I grew up in HolywoodFlorida and I the next town over we had a local business called The Beetle Shop that was privately owned and for the most part the owner hired a group of men to work in the shop that were a bunch of Bikers they were a tough looking group but a bunch of nice guys and knew VW Aircooled very well the Shop did good work but most of all they were very helpful with advice to people that turned their own wrenches on their cars those guys and the shop in general would put just about anything on VW Pans with A Aircooled motor usually a semi stock VW Transaxle and gear box they put Fiberglass boats on them and they had a Shop Truck tat was a shortened VW Bus it was so short the Driver could touch the rear Window from his seat it also pulled the front wheels off the ground at almost every stop they didn’t have Wheelie bars on it so typically the guys just did short hops on it and I imagine the Cops left them alone with that practice being South Florida and the Shop being less than 5 miles from the Beach they did put a rack on the Bus and strapped a Surf Board. Up there for a while they frequently changed the exterior color and kept the thing in one Color nothing too Extreme or Custom it was definitely used as their shop Truck And you saw the guys running Errands I myself had several Volkswagens and often went to the Shop for some parts and Advice as I was just a Teenager at the time

VWs busses often have problems with voltage drop coming from the ignition switch
the battery is all the way in the back so power has to run all the way to the front and back to the starter solenoid add in a worn out ignition switch and often you get weak engagement
so a quick fix is to put a extra relay with a short b+ run directly to the battery so when you hit the ignition switch the weak 12 volts trips the relay and the relay feeds the starter solenoid with 12v directly from the battery .

You will NEVER get one of those starters to run outside the car unless you support the drive end of the starter. The bushing for that end of the starter is mounted in the transaxle.
