      Miss Controllerism Less money never means better. Take this whole no USB-C thing for example. Even though I’m not a fan of both of their approaches, I would much rather go with only USB-C rather than no USB-C, because in a few years from now, everything will be USB-C. So have fun with your faster processor for less money until you can’t plug anything into it anymore.

    Most people are fine without USB C and probably will be for years still.
    I think part of the issue is that ports themselves are becoming less necessary. You used to need a USB port to plug in your mouse, now it's Bluetooth. A USB port to connect to your printer, now it's over wifi. A USB port for your external hard drive, now files are stored on the cloud. USB C hasn't take over as people expected because if most people are abandoning traditional USB for anything it's wireless solutions. That's why devices are coming with fewer and fewer ports. Almost everything that you used to need a port for can be accessed by BlueTooth or Wifi.

    People have been going on about USB C being the future since the last time I bought a laptop, in early 2015. Its absence here doesn't bother me at all. I've only ever used 1 USB C device in my life, my Nintendo Switch. Nothing in my workplace or home requires USB C and I don't see that changing soon.

    • @IAmInfinitus208

      Difference is when you spend over $1500 or so on the cutting edge, it BETTER be cutting edge and relatively prepared for the future (or at least 2015...).
      If I'm dropping $1,500 on a premium device, it damn well better have Thunderbolt 3. It is inexcusable that most of the Surface line doesn't.

    • @edwardhoffenheim3249
      @edwardhoffenheim3249 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      It's going to snowball. You didn't see it in phones in 2016, the next year EVERY flagship has the port. There were rumors of Apple putting it on their phones and now tablets. If apple actually removed the A-Ports from a laptop is more barable than a headphone jack from a phone. It's very useful. So this year it was one port for the average laptop. Within the next few years the ratio could switch for usb-A to usb-C. For that price it doesn't make sense not to have that port because support is growing. USB a isn't being phased out but their are simply just tangeble benefits to C over A

    • @edwardhoffenheim3249
      @edwardhoffenheim3249 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Partha Sarma I agree with the sentiment. My high-key favourite laptop is the XPS 15 2-in-1. No A ports but I legit won't miss them since I can charge from any C port and they're all 3.1 or thunderbolt.
      I see no other laptop I want to buy but I sincerely lose interest in any phone without a headphone jack.

      I do use USB C & Thunderbolt daily I connect a single cable to deliver power, a 4K monitor, Keyboard and audio peripheral in a single cable. Also awesome, I can connect an E-GPU if I wanted to, I can also use the same charger for pretty much anything and as more devices come out I can use them interchangeably. You may not see the point yet, but having a single port is indispensable. A 2000$ Laptop while saving some money for TB3 and almost no money on USB C is nuts.

    • @GabiGhita
      @GabiGhita 5 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Finally, some common sense. I'm really tired of everybody considering USB-C a deal breaker. On a USB-C-only laptop, you need a whole bunch of dongles -- on this, you only need one: the hub. And that gets you all the ports you need and you can do all those things he said you couldn't do.

    • @cl9826
      @cl9826 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm glad it has a USB A. I can plug in my wireless mouse, or my ilok without using a hub or dongle. I plug in a USB drive without worrying an adaptor or dongle. For everyday use it makes more sense. I have so many USB thumb drives that are type A. My USB C external drive came with a C to A cable. I mean, this is no big deal unless you are also wanting to use this as a desktop or something. But this is a portable machine and portable means not having to carry around dongles and a bunch of bullshit.

      Johnnyxp64 I agree. I have BT headphones (Bose QC35) and mouse (MS Surface Arc), and all my external drives and thumb drives are USB-A. My Surface Book has a USB-C port, and I never use it. My Alienware gaming laptop has full TB3 - and I never use it (and good luck charging that beast with a phone power bank). Two years from now, my eHDDs will still work over USB-A

      I wouldn't call the surface connector outdated since it's useful, but it's inexcusable to include mini-display instead of usb-c. USB-A is fine, though why it's not 3.1 instead of 3.0 is baffling as well.

    • @Montisaquadeis
      @Montisaquadeis 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah Microsoft makes devices and expects to have the designs ripped off. Its part of their nature in this case. AKA they aren't Apple. hence why they are normally more expensive then other options from other OEMs. AKa they expect people like Dell, HP, Lenovo to rip the design off and put out products with things like USB-C and TB3.

    I personally still don't see the need for a USB-C port. My Sager has 2 and I don't use either. Still using the USB-A ports tho. So yeah not having USB-C is NOT a problem for me personally. I am pretty sure at LEAST 95% of people use a dongle with USB-C ports if they use them at all.

    • @skifree0
      @skifree0 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Well think of this another way. They don't have USB-C but They do have a Mini-DP connector. The vast majority of display out devices don't use this connector natively so you are going to need a dongle anyways. And on top of that USB-C at least provides additional connectivity while you are plugged in anyways.
      as for the benefits of USB-C i consider more of a universal "docking" connector. I plug it in at home, and get power, 4 USB A, ethernet, display out, SD card readers, and The TB connection to my raid array in 1 cable.

    • @Montisaquadeis
      @Montisaquadeis 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just use a Minidp to hdmi cable at least thats what I would do. I have done so with an old Thinkpad T420 to hook it up to my tv for media for example.

    • @rolofrancia9412
      @rolofrancia9412 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're right to some degree. USB A is still a big port and shouldn't be completely replaced yet, but the surface go and surfacebook 2 have it, there was no excuse as to why Microsoft didn't include it. Also a benefit of a USB c port would be charging. A lot of hardware today are switching over to USB c. Also a USB c port would have negated the need for a dongle because you can display out with it. Not having one ruins the futurproofing of this laptop and its tablet counterpart.

    • @Danker19991
      @Danker19991 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Anyone would expect to use a laptop this expensive for at least 3-4 years. I already have a bunch of Type-C accessories so it’s definitely a setback in terms of future proofing. To be honest they should have kept Type-C in for the charging capabilities, it’s so much faster and with multiple devices using the same cable it’s more convenient than conventional brick chargers, which I’ve always hated.

    Why does every youtuber make such a big deal about usb c? For the vast majority of the population we'll probably never use that shit anyway, and despite people saying it will become mainstream it's been a few years now and it's still as irrelevant as ever. I'd rather have just 1 Usb a port than 4 usb c ports like the macbook.

    • @DevonConnelly
      @DevonConnelly 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I agree most wont use the port to it's full potential...however for me it is more of the ubiquitous nature it represents. By that I mean when I pack my bag for college or a flight...having one cable and one charger for all of my devices is a major plus. No more having to pack 3 or 4 different chargers and cables for my laptop, phone, dap, tablet, etc. USB C represents port consistency unlike ever before and it should be welcomed. The fact that its able to pack a major punch (in terms of speed/power) is just a bonus.

      USB-C port is as good as USB-A + it's smaller + it's better + it's reversible, that's why tech youtubers make a big fuss over it. The consumer isn't losing anything with it.
      Manufacturers deliberately put USB 2.0 type A ports on their machines just because of the cost of rolling out USB-C. Cost means risk. That's why tech youtubers scream for it - it means there is demand from the general public. Demand means that the costs of rolling out USB-C are justified - people will buy the thing if it has the ports. The "fuss" they make is ultimately for the sake of the consumers in the long run, so that manufacturers abandon the old standard and adopt the new one.

Have not had any issues with it and have not had a need for USB-C either. I use the display port to connect to an external monitor I have as part of my setup and while I have to use an adapter for the HDMI input it is not a huge deal breaker nor does it detract from its performance. I love tech in general so not saying that Apple or Microsoft are better but if you are looking for a laptop that performs and is reliable the Surface laptop should definitely be in the top runners on your list.

    not surprised there's not usb C, to save money Microsoft just took the chassis of the first surface, anodised the exterior to appear new with the matt black. upgraded the cpu to 8th gen and that's pretty much it

    I’ve always disliked Surface Laptops. It’s a Surface Pro with a keyboard permanently attached to it. The worst thing is that if anything on it breaks, it’s as good as garbage, since it’s glued shut and has all of its components soldered to the motherboard and glued to the chassis. It got a worse repairability score than an Apple Watch from iFixit.

      @@po.russki Annnnnnnd your money is just going to tell them that you want this and thus forcing everyone else on the less repairable laptop bus when they make newer models of this and other laptops. This happened with Apple and will for sure in Microsoft products if there is enough people like you buying this with an excuse like "but I bought a really long warranty plan". It shouldn't be crazy to expect a computer to last 5-10 years(assuming the odd repair here and there for consumable parts such as batteries, thermal paste, and hard drives) before responsibly retiring it and getting it recycled.
      In fact, I gave my friend my 9 year old 17" Asus laptop(Core 2 Quad 2Ghz, GT 240M GPU) and the only major repair I had to do was repair the DC jack after 8 years of constant use. It had one hard drive replacement and thermal paste redone a few times. He is using that for gaming and internet currently.

      @@po.russki which im sure you had to pay for...i bought the OG surface book last year paid 1.6K for it. A month out of seller warranty and the battery went out. Phoned Microsoft they told me its actually 3 months out of manufacturer warranty because apparently Best Buy purchased it 3 months prior and it was sitting in their stock room. I would assume the year of manufacturer warranty would be gin when the consumer purchased the device right? I guess i was wrong. Apparently if i had purchase the machine a year after bestbuy bought it from MS i would have been out of manufacture warranty from the start.
      Anyways MS went on to tell me that they'll have to do a replacement and that it would cost me and additional $800.00 to get this replacement which btw is a refurbished, certified "like new" machine.
      So if you're keeping track of what im saying yeah is that in 13 months i would have sent $2.4K (not including taxes) and a refurbished 'like-new" Surface Book when the damage done to the machine was no problem of my own.
      Now imagine if this was the new non-repairable models.
      Luckily i went to a local comp store and the shipped it out to fixed for under $200.00
      Dont think I can deal with MS after that!

    From 2015 I've been hearing from all the tech reviewers that USB-C is the future. I bought Lenovo Legion Y520 which has a USB-C port 18 months ago. I still haven't ever used the port. No one carries a flash drive with USB-C port around me. My OnePlus 5T has a USB-C port but the cable is USB-C to USB-A. My external Seagate harddisk has again USB-A cable. And the thing is I don't see things changing anytime soon.

    I own the previous gen surface laptop. The biggest issue for me is that it needs a bigger battery (only 45Wh). Battery life is pretty good but could be great with a bigger battery. I suspect the new version has the same size battery. I use a couple decked out desktops when I need power (4k 40 inch displays and huge SSDs). No way i'll use a laptop for that.

    It still doesn't have an SDCard port (as I use the half size, for a semi-permanent and cellphone-to-computer file transfers are still too slow by USB 3.0). It looks good as a light 2nd laptop to carry, but I already use a Google Pixel Book for that and cloud everything.

    I have a Surface Notebook 2 and I am very happy with it. It is very portable and comfortable to use with a beautiful touch screen and a very good keyboard and track pad. Plenty of power with the i7 and 16 GB of ram and 500 GB of SSD. What's not to love about it? I haven't needed a USB-C port or I would buy the docking station. The pen is what bugs me. It doesn't come with a charger? Or spare tips? Suddenly the pen is $190! Too much.
