  • In this video we are taking a look at the Microsoft Surface Laptop 3 one year later and finding out if it's still good. The Surface Laptop 3 that I have been using is the 13.5" in all black and aluminum. If you want to see more videos including dedicated Surface Laptop 3 gaming tests or other Surface Laptop 3 performance tests let me know. If there are any Surface Laptop 3 comparisons you want to see like Surface Laptop 3 vs Macbook Pro, feel free to drop your thoughts and suggestions below. Also, are you interested in the Microsoft Surface Duo? If you are I can do a comparison with other foldable phones and how the Duo pairs with other Surface devices. Make sure to stay tuned for my Surface Pro 7 review!

      I don’t know Jonathan. I love your videos but I don’t see many laptops out there that fit the bill for a good overall laptop that can do video and photo editing in 1080p and 4K for under 1000 dollars or even 900 US dollars here in the U.S.A. The surface 3 laptop is below that price point as of Labor Day sales. Just my thoughts.

    • @passionatetechnology8306
      @passionatetechnology8306 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s especially on the 13.5 inch model.

    • @OT4Tech
      @OT4Tech  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the input and the kind words! Where is it on sale for under $1,000? The model that I have is $2,000 still and that is the i7 model. The i5 definitely is not going to be the greatest for 4k video editing. It’s possible but even my i7 struggles with exports sometimes for short social media videos. Also, last years Dell XPS 13 and 15 can be purchased with the discount code on Dells website right now under $1,000. Keep in mind that the Dell’s come with user upgradeable storage and RAM plus have thunderbolt 3.

    • @passionatetechnology8306
      @passionatetechnology8306 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jonathan Casey it was on sale on Microsoft’s website for the entire surface line. Plus I saw better deals for teachers and students especially on the surface products as compared to the XPS models. I’m just coming from someone who repairs and fixes the XPS constantly when compared to the surface line.

    • @passionatetechnology8306
      @passionatetechnology8306 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Also It is gross that the Dell XP’s line is offering a subpar monitor on their entry level for the XPS 13 and worse they are using a U grade processor for their entry level cpus. You need to pay a premium to get at least get the Pro Iris grade for the cpus which is something that comes included across the board of the surface laptops. The 2019 XPS 13s also had a great deal of issues due to the form factor and poor ventilation.

    I’ve owned a Dell XPS 13 and a Surface Laptop. I have to say that the 3:2 aspect ratio of the Surface display is much better for web surfing and productivity. Makes it feel like you have much more screen real estate even though both laptops have roughly the same size display measured diagonally.

      I want the surface but it has no hdmi. How do you connect to a second screen?
      Also which would you say has a better camera?

    • @jayb8934
      @jayb8934 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@chubbyBunny94 You can get an adapter very cheap on Amazon. Newer Surfaces have a USB-C, so you'd just need a USB-C to HDMI adapter. I was able to get the necessary adapter for my Surface for about $10. As for cameras, I never really used the camera on my XPS because I didn't have it during this pandemic age of Zoom calls, so I can't compare.

    Thanks for the Surface review. Personally I've had my Surface Laptop 3 for eight months and it's the best device I've ever owned. As I type my comments here I took a quick look and can also say the device doesn't have a scratch, ding or dent anywhere...it looks like it just came out of the box. Unlike your device I did get the Alcan tera finish and after eight months of daily use it doesn't look used at all, no smudges or oil stains - so far so good. I recommend the Surface Laptop 3 and would definitely purchase it again.

    I like touchscreens on laptops. They're most useful in 2 in 1s but I find that I do miss them when I'm using a macbook so touch screen and even pen support on the SL3 is handy. I've got the 13.5" i7 16 GB / 256 GB model and I get about 8-10 hours of battery with way better standby than other windows laptops I've used. I LOVE the tall display - its so great for uni work and multitasking, and the keyboard and trackpad are brilliant. No thunderbolt 3 is a disappointment but not a big deal for me as a student as data transfers to my portable samsung T5 SSD just fine. My only real issue is a bit of coil whine which is annoying, but thats really only when charging.

      I hear you bro. This is my first week with the Surface laptop 3 and I'm running into all sorts of issues, it's insane.
      I too would not like to return it, but I am considering it.
      Here are the issues I ran into:
      Cursor freezing
      - Buzzing noise under f12 keypad
      - Random cracking noise (which people say will crack the screen after a period of time, I'm hoping not)
      - Static noise when the sound of the speaker is significant.
      - Sound delay when watching a video randomly happens. This one I just found out today and now I am actually considering a refund. This is a big issue because if I'm on a zoom call at my job and there is a 2 second delay in sound, that's just horrible.

    Had my 15" i7 for 10months now and it really is a great bit of kit. The killer features for me are touch screen that supports pen input, the 3x2 screen ratio (essential for dev work) and the magnetic charge/surface port. I have a 2nd hand surface dock off eBay that I keep my monitors and mouse dongle connected for when I'm in the office and then just flick out the connector and good to go. I’ve been using the Surface Laptop 3 for 6 months. I was previously using the first gen Surface Laptop. I put the two computers side by side. I found that the display of the Laptop 3 was worse then any other Surface devices. It does not show colors correctly. The white is not pure white on the Laptop 3. My default color setting is sRGB. But every time I start the Laptop, the colors on the display are excessively vivid. And the screen looks less bright. I thought it was an isolated case of my device. But I recently found that some other users had the same complaints.

    Even with over £240 savings, the £1300 price for the 16gb/i7/256gb version is too much now as it is a dated chip already. With new AMD and Intel as well as Apple Silicon incoming there is a far better bang for bucks. Maybe if you are affiliated to MS/Windows and want to show your love then buyer beware that value and performance won't come as part of the package.
    I have a Surface Laptop 1 and it is still going fine, no QC issues and although it runs like a 2+ year device it does the job. Battery life on most Surface products are sub-par and mine has always struggled to pass 6h. It does heat up, but I bought a laptop cooling pad to help. The display is too reflective so working outdoors needs strategic manoeuvres. I got a good deal on mine but I would not recommend retail pricing. As it has proven reliable and at the right price it was an option back when, now less so, and MS need to up their game big time with the Surface Laptop 4.

      Yep, I am completely with you. I think they have incredible hardware when it comes to design but they really need to cut the 💩 with not including thunderbolt. They have stated it’s due to security threats but we all know if it was really about security other companies wouldn’t be throwing thunderbolt on even entry level laptops.

      Here are the issues I've been experiencing:
      - Cursor freezing
      - Buzzing noise under f12 keypad
      - Random cracking noise (which people say will crack the screen after a period of time, I'm hoping not)
      - Static noise when the sound of the speaker is significant.
      - Sound delay when watching a video randomly happens. This one I just found out today and now I am actually considering a refund. This is a big issue because if I'm on a zoom call at my job and there is a 2 second delay in sound, that's just horrible.

None of the Surface computers I've bought have broken down in any way, and my Sruface Pro is 6 years old. You recommend a Dell XPS instead of this. Two coworkers have Dell XPS laptops and both have battery issues within 1 year. Both also have other performance issues. My kids all have Dell's and likewise, problems right out of warranty time. If you want build quality I don't think anything is going to beat a Surface product.

    I bought one last month i5 - 8GB - 256GB Blue for 820 Euros. Great price for the hardware and premium feel but it is very lacking in two areas: cooling and battery life. It gets very warm and loud while charging.
    The bigger issue is the battery life, it is a small battery and the quad core intel isnt helping. I buy an “ultrabook” to carry around all day and use it in a very mobile way but the battery is a big let down.
    I have my eyes on the yoga slim 7(amd). Less premium, much better performance and battery life.
