I rewatched Pride and Prejudice 2005 the other day and thought it would be fun to make a video about how socially awkward mr. Darcy is, and since it seems you liked the one about mr. Knightley, I thought why not?
If this does well, I might plan on making one about the '95 version of Darcy and maybe even a whole series of these humour videos about the male protagonists of Austen's novels or period dramas in general.

Such exquisite attention to detail, Mr Darcy

Well it is so much better than "What excellent boiled potatoes" 🤣🤣🤣
That is the equivalent of "Nice weather we're having."
In the ballroom Lizzy told him he should remark on the size of the room or the number of couples. So later on, in that scene, he remarked on the house. Such an awkward turtle.
when Darcy said "I do not have the talent of conversing easily with people I Have never met before" I felt that
Me too bro
We introverts are all Darcy
Yes that is a big handicapt lots of people have a social anxiety disorder.
I just laugh at everything. It makes me sound incredibly manic 😅

I feel like 90% of Pride and Prejudice from Darcy's POV would just be internal screaming.
I need someone to give his pov. I'd be dead reading that 😂

Awkward men should thank this book as it primes women to find awkwardness as an admirable trait
Its not the awkwardness its the sheer honesty about it that women find charming 😅
it's also just amusing, and endearing, for anyone to be goofy, it humanizes them
We don't need a book for that😂
@@superduper5949 He acts like a lot of aspie men do. Unfortunately, the majority of men on the autism spectrum never establish a romantic relationship or even maintain close friendships during adulthood. I wish more people in reality actually liked to associate with those similar to Darcy.
I am Mr. Darcy, without the money, and dashing appearance. Awkward and have a problem with foot in mouth disease. I haven't been cured of it, and I dare say I don't believe there to be a cure or that anyone will take up the cause of curing the wretched illness that plagues many men.

"Elizabeth fell in love with the dark brooding antihero" no, she read him for filth until he stopped being an asshole and fell in love with this awkward man who tried his best, loved his sister, was kind to his servants, and tried to do right by her family after having thoughtlessly insulted them.
Exactly.
YES, Darcy was the antithesis of Wickham: he didn’t look like a gentleman but was one when Wickham looked like one and wasn’t. He also had this wonderful quality to think about what Elizabeth said and to change his behavior, that’s a huge character development and it also shows that he is not as pride as we thought he was. Everything he did for Elizabeth shows how humble he is. In case you didn’t understand, I am in love with him ✨
@@elonaackerman4163 Yup, exactly. This was a man who looked at what a *woman* had said to him, a woman of inferior birth at that, whom the circumstances of his birth and breeding should have led to look down upon, and went "I'm acting like an absolute ass and I'd better fix this mess of my own making". Not only that, but he did it quietly, not showing off, not wanting Elizabeth to think he only saved Lydia and reunited Jane and Charles to impress her or change her mind. AND even then, "my feelings have not changed; BUT ONE WORD FROM YOU WILL SILENCE ME FOREVER". He's the antithesis of a Nice Guy™: he did all he did without her knowing, not to change her mind but to right a wrong, and then asked only once more and added that if she didn't love him he wouldn't ever pester her again. He didn't think he automatically "deserved" for Elizabeth to love him, or that she "owed" him in any way, quite the contrary.
In conclusion: WE STAN.
Agree, gets to know the man he actually is
This take is a month old but it's still hot.
you forgot the part where he stands up when she’s crying and just awkwardly sits back down😂
It's in my other video, the one with the 1995 and 2005 adaptations mixed together
If I remember correctly, he does not stand-up, he's pacing back and forth the room and when she enter he abruptly stops to listen to her....
I heard in the behind the scenes that standing up when a lady walks in, is a polite manner for men at that era, and it's just taking me out even more knowing that 😂😂
@Ephraim Samuel George That's what I heard from Matthew Macfadyen at the behind the scenes footage. I'm not sure whether it's like a greeting but it's etiquette before.
Just like how you can't hold anybody's hand, that's why that certain scene where Mr. Darcy helped Elizabeth onto the carriage meant a lot.
@Ephraim Samuel George I'm sure you will! Hope you meet them soon
Elizabeth: "How is my sister?"
Darcy: "Best I can do is where."

The amount of pining this man shows in his EYES is Disneyland for people who enjoy romance. He's the perfect match for this character. Many men can play a wealthy snob character but rarely one can play a devoted man with their whole body language even more so than with words like he did.
Your words are so beautiful! I think the actor portrayed a different side of Darcy and looks less arrogant than the one I imagined while reading the book… but I love seeing him sentimental and romantic, it feels like the actor portrays Darcy’s heart more than his external character

Yes ,YES , YYYYESSSS.
This video made me realize how incredibly stark the contrast is with Darcy outside of his comfort zone and Darcy in his comfort zone. Matthew did such a good job portraying the difference in posture and walk and overall body language of someone who feels at ease versus anxious in social settings. He’s sooo much more comfortable in his home with his sister, and so stiff amongst people he doesn’t know/places he hasn’t been before.
I can imagine their little gentle spats with each other after marriage even at get togethers and she'll smile and giggle and he'll look at her lovingly

I imagine that most of the time Lizzie gets her way, not because she's overbearing or he's a pushover, but because he doesn't have a strong opinion about an issue ("Mrs. Darcy, I thank you for aspiring to include my opinion, but I daresay it is a fruitless gesture. Where you see differences in drapery color as black is to white, I see two pieces cut from the same cloth.") or trusts her enough to make the decision herself. It's when he feels especially strong about an issue that you'll see some sparks fly.

Matthew and Keira are excellent actors!!! I love that at first glance Darcy seems pedantic and self-centered but, upon closer inspection, it's clear that he's shy and seriously struggles with socializing. While Elizabeth always seems somewhat amused by Darcy's lack of communication skills, as if she's impatiently waiting for him to speak or finish a sentence with a twinkle in her eyes. The best chemistry between an introvert and an extrovert
The “I love you but that was mean” had me dead 😂
In the words of Riptide: "I was scared of pretty girls and starting conversations"
That is my mantra😂
Omg so true Hahahaha
Hahaha, well she's meant to be average in the books
@Black Hayate She’s not meant to be just average in the books, tho. She’s considered a local beauty, second in looks to her older sister-who is said to be the most beautiful woman in the county. Jane is a traditional beauty. Lizzie, no. But Lizzie is still considered attractive and is the second best looking of the five sisters. She just isn’t on the level of, say, a London beauty (where the population of young women is much greater, standards are higher, and looks are more regulated by what’s “fashionable”). But the point in the book is not that Lizzie is average (she isn’t), but rather that she’s not such a knock out that her looks are her dominant quality. It’s her wit and personality that shine.
HAHA
If Mr Darcy doesn't look like he's actually about to faint or throw up or both every time he's on screen, the adaptation is wrong. He's just... literature's most awkward man and I love him.

Tied with Picture of Dorian Gray's "horrifically awkward gay love confessions to a straight boy" Basil Hallward
@@thetaaaa Dorian is not straight and Basil doesn't confess until nearly 20 years later, the night Dorian SPOILER shows him the portrait and kills him. So it's actually "most awkward confession to someone who turns out to be a sociopath" 😂😂😂😂
Both Dorian and Henry show inclination toward men and women, and the subtext at the end of chapter 3 is that Henry seduced Dorian. Two of Dorian's male lovers appear directly, aside from several others being mentioned by name (Adrian Singleton and Alan Campbell are the ones with their own scenes), and Basil yells at him "why is your friendship so fatal to young men?"
Perhaps the whole mess could have been averted if Basil hadn't let Henry beat him to the punch, but then we wouldn't have a book xD
@@roseprimviolet5852 YES. I have nothing further to add
@@RavenSutcliffe if you read the first edition, the one published before Wilde edited it to be less gay, the scene where Basil asks Dorian for his portrait back had a part that reads as such:
"It is quite true that I have worshipped you with far more romance of feeling than a man usually gives to a friend. Somehow, I had never loved a woman. I suppose I never had time. Well, from the moment I met you, your personality had the most extraordinary influence over me. I quite admit that I adored you madly, extravagantly, absurdly. I was jealous of every one to whom you spoke. I wanted to have you all to myself. I was only happy when I was with you. When I was away from you, you were still present in my art. It was all wrong and foolish. It is all wrong and foolish still."
Dorian basically responds by saying "lol, okay, is that all?"
I guess he's not canonically straight but he's not canonically queer either, unlike Basil who is unambiguously confirmed to be gay.

She's 20 yes old
The actor playing Darcy is absolutely brilliant, as a younger person watching this film it was easy to be convinced of his supposed cold character because of Elizabeth's perspective, since she's so verbal. Now that I'm older, as an adult I can read nonverbals a lot better and it completely changes the story. This actor is able to convey them so well. I think it's so important to be able to do that as an actor because nonverbals really can change the game of how a situation is interpreted and received by the audience. I think his acting makes this one of my favorite films of all time
100% agreed, the acting is excellent, and I’m able to pick the non verbals as clear as day, something I can’t do with many other actors. Darcy especially is an extremely complicated character to pull off.

Yes he’s a really good actor. I wish there was more scenes with him and Elizabeth. I wanna read the book now after watching this movie though. I hope there’s more scenes with them together in the book
Hope The book is excellent, definitely do read it. Austen’s sharp wit and clever wordplay really add spice to the novel. I wouldn’t say there are too many scenes of them together in the book, it’s more of a chronicling of the growth and change in character and thoughts that they both experience throughout, in getting to know each other. ☺️ In a way reading the book can be more of an enriching experience than watching the screen adaptation tbh.
yaas, I thought the book featured a more obvious Darcy, than the movie. But, how wrong I was haha. Now that I am older I can see the little hints.
@@Hope-si1kb They have more scenes together. I loved it as much as the movie. Of course the movie it's a little bit different, and they erased some characters, but that doesn't alter the quality of the movie. Both are amazing
5:12 SHES BEWITCHED HIM BODY AND SOUL
This is my fave Darcy. Matthew Macfadyen did an amazing job at coming across like he was desperately trying his best but was always a second too late to take action because he was lost in his own head overthinking.
the text “this is NOT going well” sliding past with darcy during the dance is comedy gold
Underrated comment 🔥
Thats ome of my absolute favssss
I was looking for this ahahaha
I CAN'T bhajzkkabsixnsjwjwj HAHAHAHAUAUUA
It was sooooo funny omg hahahahahahaa
Why does this man constantly look like he's on the verge of tears
Hambry Darcy is Kermit
His trousers too tight?
He's very shy.
He’s an Aspie
Because he is, keeps everything bottled up inside
“What have you done to poor Mr.Darcy”
“I have no idea”
Hahahaahahahah she made him constipated

I remember watching this version for the first time and not entirely understanding the nuances in the acting but now, especially with so many different videos like this one, it shows how much Mr. Darcy liked Elizabeth from early on. His awkwardness was just percieved as pride.
It's really funny once you understand that a lot of his awkwardness comes from liking Elizabeth do much. He's like an enamored nervous teenage boy. 😂
Yeah, that's pretty much it! I mean, he still made mistakes dictated by a bit of pride and a bit of prejudice (just as Elizabeth did), but mainly he fell in love with her almost from the start and really didn't know how to deal with it, poor guy. LOL
In the book it's even said outright: in the beginning, Darcy thought that Elisabeth was pretty at best, and didn't like her very much, and when he did realize he's starting to like her, he made a point of avoiding her. No wonder, he's rich so he gets pretty young women pushed at him all the time.
Sadly, it's very hard to watch this movie if you know the book. _Or_ anything about regency time in England, when running around with open hair was pretty much the same as running around in your PYs today. I try to view it as hollywood actors cos-playing Regency Romances, that helps.
But the error messages are very cute, they definitely improve the movie!
@@chiaratippy he was literally im the middle when he realized it had already began. His own words.
I think you just made me realize that too. I mean, that's definitely not what I got from the book, but it may actually be!
@@Julia-lk8jn ok so that was not me lol
Me as an introvert,at the beginning of the book: "omg i hate darcy so much hes such a jerk"
Me at the end of the book: "bruuuUH"
Is the book better than the movie?
@@aces9905 I would say yes,but it depends on the person. If you dont like to read, you will obviously like the movie better.
@@aces9905 always
@@bbybo they skipped so much from the book in this movie
@@meetaverma8372 I agree,but it happens a lot.Then again,I get it why,no one wants to sit through a 6 hour long movie 🤷🏻♀️
Charlotte: "what on earth have you done to poor Mr. Darcy?"
Lizzy: "bewitched him body and soul, I suppose"
1:28 the way he stood up was so awkward I love it. My favorite part of the movie
The poor guy, I would love to hear his internal monologue every time Lizzie roasted him. That would be interesting.
Oh that would have been great!😉
Read The Diare Mrs Darcy. Very good!!!
There's a fair chance that monologue would be a good 45% of "Oh god, oh god, oh god".
You remember in Brooklyn 99 where Peralta is screaming and playing the guitar? That’s it.
Him just crying and sobbing like a high school girl for the whole 2 hours of the movie ✨✨✨
“I love you but that was mean” I’m rolling
u beat me to this comment by 3 weeks :(
That was my favorite line too!😄😃
Me when my partner makes a small roast 😂
The distress on his face is a thing of beauty
If this movie had a voice-over for Darcy's thoughts, it would be a comedy instead of a drama
6:58 "But he says you play so well!"
*Georgiana, what. the. hell!?*
That got me good lmaoooo
SAME! It caught me totally off guard and now I'm wiping tears away cos it made me laugh so hard!
Dude LOL I was cackling!!! 🤣🤣🤣
He was like *here we go again*
😂😂😂😂😂
the super-fast passing "this is not going well" at 3:19 killed me
Omg you are actually the very first one in the comments to have noticed that, THANK YOU! I mean, that is one of three editing choices I made in this video I am the most proud of. LOL
SAME! I loved that part! Lol
That was hilarious, my favorite bit 🤣🤣🤣
I laughed at that part so hard, so goood 😂
CTippy I replayed that 5 times because it was so funny!! We noticed and the details make this video perfect.
The "aaaand she's gone" following Darcy looking to the ground kills me😂
“I thought that poetry was the food of love?” …” so what do you recommend? To encourage affection?”🥺
HE IS TRYING LIZZY
I forgot how painfully awkward he is omg
Yeah 😅
The 90s adaptation was Pride and Prejudice. This version is Social Anxiety and Snark. I love both.
EXACTLY! Exactly!
Saaaaaaaaame! 😄😄😄
Oh Iiked this series so much! Plus there was Colin Firth in Darcy role )
Ha! Yeah, they do really play down the proud side of Darcy’s character in this version, probably because they were trying to freshen the story for a contemporary audience and that part doesn’t really translate as well. But I also think the 90s version follows the novel more closely in the sense that we see Darcy through Elizabeth’s perspective, so we see her sort of distorted, prejudiced version of him until he drastically transforms when Lizzie sees who he really is. That intense change works in a TV series, but in a shorter film I think it would feel jarring/unbelievable. They were very clever in the film to instead interpret and depict Darcy *how he actually might have been* the whole time - ie, not a dick but just very shy and socially awkward - and make it more obvious straight away that Lizzie is prejudiced. These brilliant subtle hints that Matthew Macfadyen gives from the start that there is actually a really lovely person underneath his shy exterior mean that it’s less surprising when that side of him finally comes out, and more obvious that Lizzie is being short-sighted, but he comes off as a much more believable and therefore sympathetic character. I love the film’s choice to read between the book’s lines in that way.
I call the 90s Lizzy snarkier, but this version of Lizzy is wittier to me, if any of you know what I mEan
I really love the entire movie but this scene 4:02 is one of my favourites, just look at the amount of effort he’s making trying to express his feelings and do a marriage proposal 🥰
Say whatever but Darcy is the reason i started reading this novel and it was absolutely worth it. He really is the portrait of a man who has always had anything under his control and suddenly loses it because of someone who stood up in front of him. Love it
"I'm very fond of walking"
"Yes I know" Elizabeth it's code for "I remember everything about you because I love you"
He was so enthusiastic "YES!!!" 🤣
Poor Mr. Darcy wanted to walk with her so desperately to spend more time together
frr
I love how his first "yes" seems to get out of his mouth a bit to loudly and to emotionally than he originaly planned.
Awwwhhh yes
Lizzie: “How’s my sister”
Mr Darcy: “I’ll give you one better… where is your sister?”

I might actually have a similar project in mind, though it will probably involve the '95 adaptation, rather than this one.
