I like your builds/demo's quite a lot,... BUT you really need to get off the music and start some voice or voice-over to explain to less smart dud's and dudette's what and why you are doing and what you're working towards. If you do that you will get a lot more views and fewer negative or questionable replies. It is obvious to me that a great many don't even get that you have a plastic barrier between your cap plates, which is acting as the function of an electrolytic.

Your capacitor could have a maximum capacitance of 30nF if the foil was rolled precisely and tightly. and it is not an electrolytic capacitor but a foil one. Moreover, the copper reacts with the aluminum and after some time such a capacitor can be rinsed into the garbage.
I built a capacitor with a similar technology. I made of 2 rolls of 45cm x 30m aluminum foil and 2 rolls of food foil 45cm x 30m per overlap so that they do not close together ...
Measured the capacitance with a meter and it has about 10,5uF and its size resembles salami ...
I'm sorry for my English. Translated by google.

1 problem, copper and aluminum don't mix well, and the copper will eat up the aluminum, and you hadn't measured that 5000 µF capacity, but for an electro capacitor explanation it is fairly clear I guess 😁

Off course it's FAKE. Electrolitic capacitors use a thin layer of oxide to maximize the surface of the armatures. This is what makes them expensive. If it would be possible to roll up components of that capacity that easy they would cost near to zero. What is unbearable is the number of followers that waste their time watchin this garbage. Lets Thumb down loudly.

the problem is, if only one amp of current flows in to a 5000uF capacitor, the voltage across the capacitor would be 200V at the end of the first second. This "capacitor" appears to begin at 2V and even tho the current flow is several amps, the voltage does not appear to run up according to the math associated with capacitors. In other words, the current flow and the voltage readings are not possible for a capacitor of any size. Google the current/voltage/time relationship in capacitors.

First of all you made both plates with the same material so it doesn't matter where you put + or -
Anyway, having a sparc doesn't mean that the capacity is 5000ųF.
The sparc is because of the voltage.
With a capacitor of 5000ųF and 25V you could have soldered that wire.
Also put a different music just for a change..🥀

How do you calculate the maximum voltage it can withstand?

    • @HighFlyer96
      @HighFlyer96 2 ปีที่แล้ว

+ and - are misleading. With non-electrolytic capacitors you don't need to assign positive and negative poles. They are bi-directional since the capacitance is 'generated' symmetrically between the two conductive materials seperated by the dielectric material. Polarized capacitor are built asymmetrically.
The print is generally misleading, since the capacitor doesn't reach this capacitance at all, it's garbage. Better check out ElectroBOOM for better educational content in the field of electrical engineering. Greetings from an Electrical Engineering student

Agreed. And it's not an electrolytic as the negative terminal marking would indicate. An electrolytic cap uses oxide on one of the foil electrodes as the insulator. That's why they are polarized, because the oxide is only an insulator in one (current) direction. If you hook it up backwards, the oxide conducts, and the cap fails from heat buildup. This is a "paper and foil" cap, with a low capacitance, high voltage ability, and no polarity. I suspect he has, as another commenter said, used a real electrolytic inside the can he did the "testing" with.

to @kenttidwell740. Sir, please note that what you said applies only when the capacitor is fed from a current source, The power supply he used as a voltage source with a very low output impedance so the 24 volts were reached very quickly because of the low output impedance of the voltage source.
What you said applies to a current source, .
