  • In this video I review the Maxpedition Falcon 2 Backpack, after 10 years of usage. In this video I cover the PROS and CONS that I have discovered over that time in using it. At the end of the video I follow up to where I would recommend using this backpack.
    Thanks for watching Backcountry Tripper a.k.a Dave.

    A good, long-term review is worth 100 first-impression videos. Good video.

    I agree that the padding isn't much, but easily fixed and the nice thing is that the straps are a nuisance when you don't want the padding, especially if when using the bag around town in between when going hiking. I've noticed that all the straps get in the way when not using as a backpack. So I think adding padding only when needed can be an advantage, but hear your point too. appreciate that you did the review while hiking, that makes the video 1000x more interesting and relevant.

      They've definitely made some improvements over the years too the shoulder straps have been improved with a better more comfortable/breathable padding which is even on the back panel plus it seems they got rid of the zipper on the outside for the hydration bladder which imo is an improvement less failure points and the hydration bladder space is still there its just only accessible from the inside which may be a con for convenience but as i said i think the removal of the outside access improves durability and possibly comfort cause you don't have a zipper possibly digging into your back either. Also regarding the waist straps it seems they've improved the durability for it its a folded over piece of webbing now so the likelihood of it ripping the way his did is not likely to occur unless its overloaded or really thrashed on. Aside from that those are the differences I can see on the new generation of falcon 3 packs.

    Thank you for the honest review. I’m hard on my gear, I currently have a Maxpedition Monsoon and was going to replace it with the Condor 2.
    I think I’ll stick with the Monsoon, it’s very strong.

    Nice review , i have the same bag and keep a maxpedition proteus with all my bushgear in it .... when i do overnighters or even up to a week I strap a 12x4 bottle holder filled with cooking gear etc , sleeping bag on the bottom and a dd pyramid tent strapped on the other side .... take the proteus out and wear it as a fanny pack nd voila the falcon 2 is empty so im able to bring some spare clothing food for about a week
    Nd still have quite some room left , love it!

      @BackcountryTripper  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you, that's funny just recently I have been using the proteus as well as a personal pack and the backpack is for all my camp gear. The bottle holder for cooking gear is a great idea!

  • @adamr8628

    nice review. side note....they say this is 23 liters. that is equal to 6.07 gallons. Now picture even a 5 gallon bucket next to this bag. This bag will easily fit inside a 5 gallon bucket with room to spare. makes you wonder how they arrive at the sizing for these things??

    • @BackcountryTripper
      @BackcountryTripper  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah agreed. So many companies do this. They try to find the maximum value in a controlled environment to get their stats. Maybe they maxed out each individual compartment and rounded up the volume.

  • @cendris123

    Hey! Thanks for the review. Looking to use the pack for rucking, so the shoulder strap padding might be an issue. Quick q-- noticed you've got a metal ring attached to the lower pouch buckle. I don't see that in the product pictures -- is that something you added on?

    • @BackcountryTripper
      @BackcountryTripper  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey , thank you for the kind words. For rucking if it's too heavy those straps might dig into your shoulders it depends on the weight I think. The metal D ring if that is the one your referring too is stock I didn't add it.

    I own falcon 2 since 2011, this backpack was all over the world with me,and it still looks like new!!! Just now I've bought riftblade,but i have doubts about the lasercut molle webbing...i ty it could become not so elastic thru the time, anyway nothing beats the maxpedition!!!

    • @BackcountryTripper
      @BackcountryTripper  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That's awesome to hear about your Falcon 2 backpack lasting so long and traveling all around the world with you! Maxpedition does have a great reputation for durability. As for the new Riftblade with the lasercut molle webbing, it's understandable to have some doubts about its long-term elasticity. Hopefully, it will hold up well for you. Maxpedition sure knows how to make quality gear. Enjoy your new backpack adventures!
      Thanks for watching!

    If you were to replace this bag, is there anything better in the same price band or cheaper?

    • @BackcountryTripper
      @BackcountryTripper  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you!! I'm glad it helped. It's always nice to see how a bag lasted after such a long time. You won't be disappointed with the falcon 3. I think for light hiking and day trips the falcon 3 is perfect in size.
      Great question, I purchased the 5.11 TACTICAL Rush 72 recently and I'm going to be testing it out. Check out the 511tactical stuff they have great gear as well. The only reason I'm trying them however is because the Rush 72 is 55L in size so I can take it for overnighters and I need extra space for camera gear, and I want to test their brand out. ( Plus Maxpedition does not have anything bigger then that )
      Price wise they are comparable, Falcon 3 is 212.99 right now on their website and the RUSH24™ BACKPACK 37L is 197.20 on their site.
      Cheers,
      Dave

    I got a cheap Chinese unbranded version that still floating around after 7 years. Still good, brand it's just a name sometimes. But for my budget people out there, I recommend LAPG backpack 24 hour pack backpack has a lot more space.$80 5.11 is nice too but expensive too.

    • @BackcountryTripper
      @BackcountryTripper  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      My friend has two Maxpedition unbranded Chinese versions and they are both already falling apart ( Stitching issues ). I think it's a toss up, sometimes you get lucky and have no issues sometimes you don't. For me a brand name like Maxpedition or 511 represents quality control. Thanks for your feedback.

    I have had my Falcon II and Falcon III for over a decade and they both still look like brand new, no tears no wear. i use my III for my camping gear and my II for my camera gear, i generally wear my III on my back and my II on my front or i just carry it by the handle but both have been to hell and back and i have no complaints. i would by them both again if i needed to.

      @@BackcountryTripper Hi Dave, I carry about 30lbs in the III and roughly 16lbs in the II currently...
      Most of my camping gear is UL these days and I'm only carrying a couple GoPro's and a small digital camcorder as well as a couple lights and stands and a Jackery 160, sometimes I also bring my SmallRig Smartphone rig too but the camera bag never exceeds 20lbs and I'm not much of a hiker these days usually just into the woods for an overnight and a couple meals...

      @@UrbCrafter Sorry for the late reply, that's not too bad actually for weight. But still decent for sure. Thank you for sharing the details. @@BackcountryTripper Its cool, Late replies are better than no reply at all... I use to carry a DSLR but the weight of it and the lenses was just to much so i picked up a Canon Vixia HF R700 which weights almost nothing and with my GoPro's i got my weight down to just a few pounds where as i was lugging around about 12lbs in just camera and lenses and with the tripod and my lights and other gadgets it felt like i was carrying a small child around.

    Here's another downside of the bag: weight. At over 3.2 lbs for a 23L bag, it's heavy. Given the Falcon's 1050D nylon construction, and all that molle, it's understandable but durability also has a price. Consider the Osprey Talon 22 at .92 lbs--that includes the weight bearing waist belt!--is less than a third of the weight.

      Yeah kinda crazy. I had to look at my purchase receipt to confirm, I couldn't believe it had been 10 years. Yes the fabric 1050-Denier is essentially indestructible in my opinion. I have a wallet called "THE WALLET" that is made from the same stuff and I've had that for 21 years and it is just now starting to look used. Thank you so much for the feedback I totally agree with the out of the box reviews. Those reviews drive me absolutely crazy, so many I see even after a few months review and that is not enough unless your using it heavily and pushing the gear hard. Thanks for watching Andrew! I have more long term gear reviews coming as well. Cheers Dave.
