My Grandfather was a missionary to the Bad River Band Odanah, WI around 1920. He helped them to defend their treaty rights and was excommunicated by the church for doing so but his Indian brothers welcomed him and his family into the Band giving them each an Indian name. My father was named Ogemawagejik (bad spelling) My sister has many photo of the family in traditional clothing given to them. They were seated with many tribal elders. I was later given the name given to my uncle, Aan'aawbi. It's too bad the efforts to honor the treaties were unsuccessful.
