  • If you hammock camping enough, eventually you will come across a situation where the trees are less than ideal. How do you set up a hammock with only small saplings? How do you set up a hammock with no trees at all? Here are my tips and suggestions to do Hammock Camping the right way. Watch this video and discover some advanced hammock camping techniques.
Here is a good hammock that I have used for years:

Loved the desert set up. Bad week I needed that laugh. The rest of the video was great. I'm new to hammocks so, I enjoyed it immensely.

I was expecting you to create a Tensa4 type hammock stand with saplings and paracord but you still managed to get the job done. Thanks for the fun video.

My girlfriend complains a lot about camping. Do you have a "Stay at Home" knot you could teach us? 😳 Or an "I can't hear you" knot? 🤣🤣🤣 Maybe a "Zip it" knot? 🤔 Please???
    Good video Jason. ❤

I'm too much of a "tosser & turner" to sleep in a hammock. But is is still pleasurable to watch the different methods used. Keep breathin'.

    Good tips Jason
Here is a good method for setting up a hammock on the ground:
Any well built hammock should do, but I use a double bottom Warbonnet XLC hammock, a 10x13 Aqua Quest Defender tarp, a German surplus ground cloth (8' long x 3.5' wide), shock cord and titanium tent pegs (these are with me no matter if I'm hanging or on the ground).
The only real modifications to the hammock is by sewing 550-cord loops on the bottom 4 corners and 1 at the center points for tent pegs and then 550-cord loops sewn on the 4 corners of the bug netting to keep it raised.
The ground sheet is obviously to protect the floor just like with any tent, or for my gear and boots when I'm hanging.
The double fabric bottom is also great to keep a sleeping pad from sliding around.

Instead of paranoid use mule tape the stuff you use to pull wire thru pipe with. Very strong and it doesn't stretch.

You dont really need to do the bracing lines for those trees..
I'm an arborist and those trees can hold your weight just fine...I tend to hang my hammock up higher on trees that thin and that way my hammock will reach that 30° angle . They might bend but as long as they're relatively green and not terribley thin. You can also just lean back with the tree straps to test it before you put up the hammock

Thank you for this, because this is often my reality. I love hammock camping, it's even my sleeping system of choice in my house. But out where I like most places are not ideal conditions for stringing up a hammock.

What impresses me most about hammocks is the risk of neck injury if they collapse. So I think I'll use extra extra precautions when setting up.

No Trees ???? More like only saplings available. Not sure about advanced setup , I had to do almost the same back in the late 50's with my dads old U.S. Army Jungle Hammock. Only I tied several of small saplings together with the hammocks suspension line. Fortunately I had a sufficient ( not great but OK ) sized tree at the other end. Since then I like to to locate a proper area to hang in. A worse problem is to many trees , especially if you believe in the "Leave no trace philosophy ". No Trees , a Trekking Pole at each end with something under the hammock as a ground cloth. Turning your hammock into a Bivy. I really like your idea of the Cowboy Camping , lot simpler and easy. LOL

I call them "small trees" and prefer them to the "big trees" that are much more dangerous if a big branch breaks down and falls on you. If the trees start bending - you should NOT tie your tarp to the same trees or else it will sag and accumulate water and possibly leak through. If there is a stable tree right behind it - tie the tarp there, but if there isn't - you shouldn't hang the hammock there at all.

By. using paracord on those trees you will cut through the bark. Not a good practice.
The only correct thing you did in this video was to show the proper way to tie a truckers hitch.
