Beginner Bourbon: The Authoritative List - According to Me, obviously.

  • This video is probably long overdue. It seems like a prerequisite to starting a TH-cam channel about whiskey is a commitment to make a "Beginner Bourbon" video. So, I'm paying my dues. My goal in this vid is to shout-out the whiskeys that I would use to blow someone's mind - not the usual choices. "Here's a bottle (or 7) you should buy that's both accessible and delicious."

Does anyone else hear “Droopy Whiskey”?? Cracks me up. Love the channel

A so-called beginner bourbon should be limited in price, I say no more than $30. Nobody should begin with the bottom shelf but there should be enough in the next level to begin with and that goes for all types of spirits.

Love RR10 but it's 42.99 in my neck of the woods, I still buy it but secretly wish I could get it for 30ish like it seems to be elsewhere

If you haven't tried Larceny lately, you should. It's an easy drinking wheater that I like better than Makers Mark and its cheaper.

Not a big Jim Beam fan heck the white label is not good in my opinion but I really like Jim Beam Black it's 86 proof and much better than white label

Basil Hayden is still the bourbon I regret buying the most. What a let down. At least the Evan Williams stuff I didn't like wasn't in the $30+ range. Yeesh.

I would add 1792 Small Batch

Drew I’d like to challenge you to do an “Intermediate bourbon” list. A list for people who are a couple years in and know the lay of the land but aren’t by any means an “expert”. I’ve scoured whiskeytube for a similar video and have had little luck finding one. Thanks man and have a great day!

Interesting. I started my Bourbon journey with Knob Creek 100.

I understand the Kentucky spirit, I'm a big turkey fan and when I finally grabbed my first spirit I went through a 1/4 of the bottle before I even realized it. So I stopped drinking for the night, but yeah it is that much better than 101

Kentucky spirit to me I guess from my bottle is the soft version of Rare Breed and has its profile except not as aggressive. 🤷‍♂️

What brand of bourbon glass do you have there? I’d like to buy a similar one

Staying on the SiB train, Jack SiB 94 proof deserves some love. Also love recommending Michter's to newbies. It's sweet, crushable, and perfect for anyone who is still obsessed with "smooth" whiskies.

Completely agree on the Michter's. I don't buy it though. It's very palatable, smooth, well balanced, etc, but it doesn't have anything that makes it stand out to me. It's also $50 in PA, so I can't do it with so much better juice at lower price points. The Michter's rye is another story though. It will always be on my shelf. I love it

Totally agree with the 4R SiB, 1792 SiB, and WTKS. I’d add Remus for that MGP profile and maybe Makers 46 as a wheater.

Started with 1910. Now have 32 bottles with some nice picks but return to 1910 as my daily sipper. I appreciate your effort to be different with a “purpose” instead of “just to be different. Thanks

Another fun video, always enjoy your format, only one I disagree with is 1792, to me it’s drain pour, also struggled with the 12yr.

I agree with you 100% about Kentucky Spirit! Their normal release is great on its own but if you can find a store pick that’s even better. I had a store pick last year that is actually in my top 5 of all time! Looking forward to the Entry Proof Kentucky Spirit pick one day! Lol

YOU ARE WRONG with nothing you said in this video. Drews hot take is most always a good take. This is a great "beginners bourbon list that is not white noise like all the other ones.
I'd even say most of these bottles could be for the advanced drinker that likes a lower proof from time to time..

I wish I could find Kentucky Spirit in PA. Something I've really grown to like in the last year that's always available here is Bulliet 10 year. I've blinded it a lot with other people against things at higher prices and similar proof points and it always does VERY well. It's always crushes Blanton's

I'm a huge WT fan, so glad to see you recommended some good stuff from them. I would say, and again personal preference, the WT Longbranch is tasty and around $40 and I would take it over the Statesman. I'm still trying to find Kentucky Spirit, especially after your description.
