I wouldn’t call it roaring, Heidi. More like slipping back into my favourite old, cozy jumper, and settling down in front of the fireplace. 🙂 If only I had a fireplace. 😜
Excellent - love the way you're going about it. Maybe I'll follow along as it's been a while. My first reading of LOTR was in the 70s when it still had a sort of 'hippy bible' status, and I think some of us approached it looking for a transcendent, immersive, slightly mysterious experience. Finding an exciting saga came as a bonus. So that Atlas is immensely appealing to me as LOTR is so much about landscape in every sense. Also in pre-movie days reading it was like joining a club as regular joes didn't know or care about Gollum or have a view on Tom Bombadil. Look forward to the vlogs!
A friend back in uni, seeing me re-reading it *again*, said, “isn’t it just 75% landscape description?” 😆 And yeah, it kinda is, but I love it. The atlas should be very handy!
I'm in the same boat. I have no idea how often I have read it. I read it both in German as a kid (around 10 for the first time, I think?) and young teen and in English later. But I think it has been around a decade that I read it last. So I actually plan to reread it next year and I am looking at nice editions to replace my old worn out paperback. And I also have the atlas! An older German hardcover version of it. I still have the map of Middle Earth above my desk. Yes, I love maps. Looking forward to the discussions!
Funny enough, I managed to complete my MA thesis on fantasy lit without having read all of LOTR, something I then corrected, reading through the first quarter of Fellowship during graduation. (I did read Fellowship when I was a teen but got bogged down in Two Towers.) This should be a great project, so I look forward to seeing the next few videos :)
I'm so tempted to join in, but I need to stop or slow down with rereads! 😅 While the reading experience was superior for me, I suspect fantasy films and video games have been largely influenced by Howard Shore's soundtrack. Happy reading and vlogging!
Nice! Maybe I’ll join. LOR is still on my TBR. I tried it once, but didn’t manage to finish the first book, because of the writing style. But as a fantasy fan, I really want to read it and I hope that by now I can focus more on the story, plus I recently have been in a classic back to basics fantasy mood. I hope I like it better than the hobbit, though, which I found not to my taste. I do remember the LOR-world fondly, as my childhood friend loved it and we often played in the world, either with table top games or simply by our imagination (we were children :D )
Yeah, I’d say if the childish style of The Hobbit was what put you off of it, LotR is quite different. I dearly love both, but The Hobbit is definitely a children’s book, and LotR isn’t at all.
Like you, I did read LOTR every year or every other year; and then I stopped. I need to set aside the time for a re-read. Enjoy your journey back to Middle Earth. 😊
I want to re-read it so maybe now is the time!!!. I need to buy the english version and I am a bit scared about the language as I have only read it in spanish ... I have been reading almost exclusively in english for 20 years without any issue but for some reason I feel intimidated by LODR 😅
In fact, I have been finding out that many young fantasy fans not only have not read The Lord of the Rings, but that they also have not seen the Peter Jackson film adaptation, which would now be in its tweens if it were a hobbit. Looking forward to chatting about this old friend with you, Matt!
Okay, haven’t read the books OR seen the movies?! We greybeards are then justified in a little gatekeeping, are we not? 😆 Joking, of course. Can’t wait to chat Middle Earth with you, mate! 😀
I have been holding off doing a reread of the LOTR books for a while and this is the perfect excuse to dive back into it. Plus I got the fantastic Alan Lee box set hardbacks so I’m excited for the art along the way!
Ah, cool. Don’t know the Alan Lee box set, but I have the old one from the 90’s, one *massive* hardback. Not very comfy for reading (table required) but it’s gorgeous. Alan Lee’s work is what my Middle Earth looks like. ♥️
LOTR is my comfort read and so much more. Hope to keep rereading it. Very much looking forward to this. Tolkien's language, his storytelling, his imagination are all incredible. I just finished a Silmarillion reread. So wonderful.
@@MattonBooks Me too regarding the scared part. Last year finally I participated in a 3 month long slow buddy read on Owen Edwards' channel Discord and really enjoyed it. Its not difficult, it's not a traditional novel that's all. If you like Tolkien's writing and do maybe one chapter and take breaks, it's very doable. But LOTR rules of course!
Such a cool idea, and those paperbacks are terrific - I haven't seen them before! Did you get the latest Hobbit one, with the slipcase or the sprayed edges? I may join; when I read Tolkien's book I read a translation (to Spanish) and I think it lost quite a bit of Tolkien's prose. I re-read only The Fellowship in English since then and it was soooo different, honestly! Looking forward to your vlogs!
I have a green slipcase Hobbit - check out my editions video. But it’s an older one, without the window in the slipcase, so I may be getting the newer one too, sometime. 🙂
Funnily enough I was considering re-reading LOTR too since it’s been a while, and am tempted by the audio with Serkis. I have a few editions but the nicest to read from is the millennium edition of 6 books. I read it 3x in my mid late 20s and nothing since so not the same nostalgia, but some 😊 Don’t have that atlas but I did print a ‘timeline’ that showed me where each group was in relation to each other.
Well, I have to say now’s the perfect time for a re-read, Vero. 😉 Yeah, there is SO MUCH supplementary material, if you want to go beyond just the novels themselves. It’s a little overwhelming! 😳
So happy you are covering LOTR in depth/ deep dive, character studies? It is the gold standard for me! What a way to come roaring back to booktube!

YES! 😀
Thank you for a great video 🎥

Yes, when you first mentioned your plans, I just thought, that I also wnt to reread LOTR again. Looking forward to the vlogs and discussions
Do it Theres! 😀

Same for me Olphas, it’s been about a decade, I think? So looking forward to visiting Middle Earth again. 🙂

Thanks Johanna. 🙂 I know the “making too many plans” problem only too well, so no expectations on my side.

The atlas looks interesting. Might get it for when i reread Tolkien again
Yeah, it’s got A LOT in it. Half of it is just from the Silmarillion. Tonnes of stuff to read & look at. 🙂👌🏻
@@MattonBooks i suck at reading maps or understanding geography. I know I’ll find it useful

Another thing we have in common, Francois. 🙂 Can’t wait to spend some time with the fellowship again. ♥️

Two things Alma: 1. The language is not at all difficult, don't worry. 2. Yes, now is definitely the time. 😀

The Silmarillion is still on my 😬 list. Tried and failed to complete it in my teens, and have been kind of afraid of it ever since. 😆
