My 7 year old granddaughter will love having a shot at making one of these as a starter project. So far she's turned a small snack bowl and a mushroom for her fairy garden. Cheers, mate.
Oh Lewis......I have 2 grandsons. 1 who has recently became a teenager, the other will become one in a few months. They are finding new ways to push my son's buttons. They could have SO much fun with a pair of these! lol 👹😇 Maybe ill make some, and give em to someone elses kids!
You need to learn to use the blade guard on your band saw. Lower it to leave just a little space between the top of the work and the guard. An open blade is an invitation to injury.
I made a "useful" item from scrap I will share:- small piece of walnut (what I had) turned to diameter that just fits through my face plate. I inserted a screw into center of one end, cut screw off with 1/4" protruding, carefully ground screw to a point. Now for placing face plate tap point into centermark slide plate over dowel, put in screws then wiggle the dowel free. this way if you take off face plate then need to re- attach for some reason it is perfectly centered every time -Tyler
Thank you so much, for the lovely idea, and clear guidance too! Two little great-nephews will enjoy them for Christmas, we're sure... BTW - your lovely dog looks more like a Pointer, then a Shepherd? Thanks again!
I have my grandchildren over next week, as they are on half term holiday, and I was wondering what project I could make with them: problem solved! Thanks for the most excellent video!
I just turned my first whistle. Good Fun! Do you hunt your shorthair and why didn’t you dock her tail? Just wondering? I had a shorthair for 13 years. Ike. I miss him tremendously!!! For every bird hunter you should have at least one great bird dog. That was Ike!! Lord I miss Him!! Thanks for the video and enjoy your dog!! KB
Yes they are fun! I don't hunt my dog, she is just a really great pet. It isnt legal to dock tails here and I wouldnt likely have anyway, I prefer them left. Thank you for watching!
Hi Lewis, That's a fantastic whistle but your dog stole the show for me. I'm keeping this video because I will be making some for my craft fairs. Take care Lewis and sorry to have missed the premier. Cheers, Huw
That's brilliant Lewis. Any chance you could give us a sketch with dimentions to make one. They would be a great little market project. I was wondering the hole size in the small insert. Cheers for another great idea. Denis.
Thank you Deno! Actually the insert is sanded flat the full length of it it I will put out a video on the dimensions and show that. Thanks for watching!
@@TheKlondikeCraftsman well I started to make a weed pot then the neck broke so thought I’d try a small whistle. It worked sweet, very shrill, alarm type. Looked at the air flow dynamics of whistles and it is extremely interesting but at this time I think I’ll stick to simple especially due to the number of grandkids who will want one. Thanks for the nudge to turn one.
I’m not sure Daryl but mine comes every time. After the first time when she came so quickly I make sure she gets a treat for coming to it. 100% success so far!
Did I hear you say New Brunswick? If so I did not know that and have watched quite a few of your videos and am an amateur turner myself with some of my turnings videos throughout my Chanel.
I have not glued it in yet but I will. It doesn’t actually need to be glued as the fit is snug HOWEVER, if these were going to be used by anyone else as gifts or sold I would absolutely glue it in as someone playing around, especially kids, could inhale it. Thank you for watching!
Great video. I could probably annoy most of the parents round here by making a load of these for the kids in the area. 🤣😂
Haha! Everyone is saying the same thing! If you make some please show me how they turned out!
Sweet a good toy for grandpa to make for the grandkids and send them home. Ha ha ha
So many people have said that! I hope the parents never find out who put the idea out there! Thanks for watching!
just found you today , thank you
Im glad you did. Thank you for watching!
I’ve never considered using a wrench as a calliper to measure diameter before, brilliant idea.
Thanks Rob, certainly not an original idea but it is effective! Thanks for watching!
My 7 year old granddaughter will love having a shot at making one of these as a starter project. So far she's turned a small snack bowl and a mushroom for her fairy garden. Cheers, mate.
Great idea and glad to hear you have an apprentice! Thanks for watching!

New grandson …… new project! Thanks Lewis.

No harm in trying! Thanks for watching!
Great fun and nicely finished!
Thank you Paully, I appreciate it!
That is beautiful…simple or not! Beautiful pup! Now… can you make one that gets the kids to come😉🤣
Only a guarantee of food will make kids come! Thanks for watching!
Nice whistle. We have the same issue with our chocolate lab. Might have to give this a try. Was surprised to see you are a fellow NB'er!
Thanks, let me know how it works for you.
Great idea for impulse buys at craft shows. Could you clarify one thing please? Does the plug close the end off completely?
Thank you Sue! The 3/8 dowel is flattened on one face the full length of it. That is the passage the air moves through. Thank you for watching!
Haha! This was brilliant Lewis, I will definitely be giving this a go!
That’s a great looking pup, too!
Thanks Seth! Love to see how you make out. Yeah I love my pup!
Great project - short but useful - Well done
Thanks Brian, I had no idea how useful when I started!
What a cool, simple project. Gonna have to make one now
Thanks Mark, let me know how it goes!

These are fun David! I appreciate you watching!
.
I'm making one tomorrow. Maybe my nitwit dog will respond.
I’d love to know how it works out! Thanks for watching!
I have tried making a few of these based on the Ernie Conover video, How do you know where to place the tone hole?
I believe the measurements were from his video for the most part. Thanks for watching Jacob!
Great idea. I wonder how difficult it would be to train a dog to a whistle.. could be handy at off leash parks, I suppose.
I’m not sure Daryl but mine comes every time. After the first time when she came so quickly I make sure she gets a treat for coming to it. 100% success so far!
@@TheKlondikeCraftsman LOL. With no context at all, my wife read your comment and wondered what the heck I talk about with my woodworking buddies!!
That is too funny!
I think I am having a dim moment. How do you blow into it when you Plugged it? Remember "There is no such thing as a stupid question"!
The “plug” is sanded flat on one side allowing air through. Thanks for watching!
@@TheKlondikeCraftsman Thank you sir. I was asking for someone else. Obviously
Nice project and it looks like so much fun to turn. If you don't mind me asking, what was the finish you used?
Thank you Don. The finish is HUT wax. Thanks for watching!
what was the compound you were using to buff the whistle?
HUT wax. Available at hut products online. Thanks for watching Peter!
Did I hear you say New Brunswick? If so I did not know that and have watched quite a few of your videos and am an amateur turner myself with some of my turnings videos throughout my Chanel.
Very cool! Yes I am in Tracy. I’ll check your channel out. Thanks for watching!
I’m confused. How can you blow the whistle with the walnut dowel in the end of the whistle?
The dowel was sanded flat, I didn’t show sanding it but I talked about it and you can see the flat on it. Thanks for watching!
@@TheKlondikeCraftsman Thanks!
I love it. Simple but really nice. What is the finish you rubbed on. It looks fantastic.
Thanks Suzette! The finish is HUT wax. It’s durable and food safe. Thank you for watching!
I'm curious, did you leave the wooden dowel in without gluing it?
I have not glued it in yet but I will. It doesn’t actually need to be glued as the fit is snug HOWEVER, if these were going to be used by anyone else as gifts or sold I would absolutely glue it in as someone playing around, especially kids, could inhale it. Thank you for watching!

I am in Tracy Paul. Thanks for watching!
@@TheKlondikeCraftsman not too far
Hi, where can I buy that wax stick? Your videos are so helpful.
Where do you live William?
@@TheKlondikeCraftsman Hi, northwest of Toronto,
I get mine from HUT products online.
Is there any math involved in placing the pitch-change hole?
Done properly there probably should be Tim. To be honest I winged it and got lucky! Thank you for watching!
@@TheKlondikeCraftsman Not that I have ever had to rely on luck...
Just had thought, if it works on dogs will it work on kids, they don’t come when called eather😳
Haha, you aren’t the first to ask that…. If you give them a treat they may! Thanks for watching!
...4 months later, does she still come to the whistle? Lol
Like a shot yes!
