This movie may have some of the best action sequences in cinema, but the comedy is extremely underrated. This scene is just purely hilarious.

Yeah but this movie takes place in February-March 1862, when neither Lee nor Grant were famous.
Lee command small detachments of coastal forces in North Carolina, and Grant just only started his first battles (capturing forts Henry and Donelson in Tennessee) 🤪
In that moment the most famous Confederate general was Albert Sidney Johnston, not Robert Lee.

This movie is really comedic in an odd way. It’s dark, violent, gritty and set during one of the bloodiest wars in American history yet manages to get a cheeky laugh out of you every now and then.
Tuco in general is goofy. With his nonsense quotes about Spurs or him having a bath with his gun and killing someone, to this scene, or his constant rage and disbelief when Blondie messes with him.

These movies are not known for their historical accuracy. Blondie's using a Winchester repeating rifle, for God's sake more than a decade before it was invented(1873). It's more mythic, kinda like what we collectively in our modern heads think of when we picture the old west. Accuracy need not apply.

Paul 00075 And don't get me started on the revolvers in this movie. This movie is a prequel though. The other two parts of the dollar trilogy take place after the civil war. So I presume Leone reused the props he had at hand, that were fitting in those movies. Other parts of the movie are actually quite well researched, so he clearly put in some effort.

Great scene based on a story by Ambrose Bierce about a Union officer so covered in dust he looks grey. By the way, the Union officer might be Capt. James "Paddy" Graydon, leader of a Union "spy company" during the New Mexico campaign. And quit harping on the use of cartridge revolvers in the film, especially when they were more common than you can imagine. One company that copied the 1851 colt was said to have shipped cartridge revolvers(illegally)direct from the factory! Now look up the Prescott revolver, a solid frame cartridge revolver patented in 1861! It was a patent, not technology, that prevented more widespread use of cartridges.

The scene is filmed in a dry gulch very near the ocean on the south of Spain, Rambla de Salinas. This area is often used for movies and TV(including Rat Patrol). I would like to hear from an expert about the rank of that Union officer. Anyway, if they had been caught, the closest prison camp would be Illinois, although a Kansas installation was used as a transfer point. You can see the outline of the camp on Google Earth not far East of Sad Hill Cemetary.

They seemed to want to blend in with the crowd. So as to not ruffle any feathers 🪶 so to speak.
But Tuco was able to make friends easily and adjusted well. His more reticent partner was a bit uneasy in his new surroundings.

The movie is not 100% historically acurate. The maker is not english nor could he speak english. He also added dynamite in the movie qich was also not invented yet during the civil war.

I know the movie wasn't trying to be the most historically accurate, but my itch for being a know-it-all is acting up.
Given the context of this being set in early 1862 during the battle of Glorieta Pass, there's no way in hell anyone would've known who Lee was, except maybe for his failed campaign in West Virginia. It would have made much more sense to mention Stonewall Jackson, who would have been well known for his actions at 1st Manassas.
Grant had captured Fort Donelson a month earlier, so his mention makes sense, but Lee? No.

    • @ProtomanButCallMeBlues

the commanders or what happened are not historically accurate. It's more of a Romanticized depiction of the entire events. In the movie what ends up happening is both Confederate and Union forces do a mutually assured destruction, where both forces wipe each other out which is why the trio has a chance to search for the loot (which was supposed to be used to pay for the Confederate army) in the chaotic aftermath.

I don't know much from the civil war, in Spain is called the secesion war. One side wanted to seced. Why?
      - The central goberment taxed imports, so the south had to by to the north many industrial goods.
      - Law between states wasn"t arrainged properly. The expose as example, not as the main claim, that scaped slaves were not returned. And the law said they should.
So being in the union, was expensive and with no garanties.
The wanted to go their own way.
      Central goberment:
The main income werw import duties. So if the south secced, they would lose a lot of income. This is the main reason with Lincoln started the war.
      The north invaded the south.
Lincoln, avolish slavery, after two years of war, and only im condederate states.
He send 300.000 yound soldiers to death only in the union side.
The black confederate. Yes there were black condederates, not many. Mainly the last years of war, due to the lack of soldiers.
Jefferson Davies never had a traison sentece, becouse he had no court against him. He would prof he had rigths to break the union.
What happened next after the war? The seed of a big centralizated institution was created.
      One general once said.
The last time americans had figth for their rights and freedom, was during the civil war, and they lost.
