I remain to be convinced by the glassed-in tow rail/gunwale idea. If i can be blunt I imagine it could look kind of chunky and out dated. A spiffy stainless one would look a bit more modern. I'd glass the joint inside and out first of course, could add captive nuts if water ingress is a worry, but bolting hardware through the deck is fairly standard practice. All that said, the quality of your workmanship so far is outstanding, you enjoy working in fibreglass and have a vision of what it'll look like. You do what you want to do and I'll keep enjoying watching you!
I just finished the process of making a gingerbread house with my youngest son, then turned on the computer - and received a Sail Life notification. Perfect!
Mads, all of that work, holding down a regular job and traveling to LA several time in a year and half! OH MY! Enjoy S Ca weather this winter is a lot better than last.
Thank you Mads. Have a safe trip to LA and enjoy your Holidays in sunny California. My best to Ava and looking forward to to seeing you back next year.
DIY content while cruising definitely. I see lots of good channels loose folks once they finish projects. A few exceptions....but definitely a trend. Hope you and your bride to be have a nice Christmas. 🎄
You continue to blow my mind! I bought a 30' A30 a few months ago, and I am paralized by the amount of work I need to do on this tiny boat... Thanks for your continued inspiration.
Why not a much smaller non-cored glass fairing over the deck/hull joint and then bolting on a perforated aluminum toe rail? The advantages are: easier to do, less susceptible to damage, and the holes in a metal toe rail allow easy attachments for preventers, tweekers or outboard reaching blocks where ever you find you need them.
Please pay attention. Bolts are not wanted. An aluminium toe rail is a toe rail, not a cleat, or chain plate of sorts to fix rigging to. It is a toe rail. He has worked out what he wants, he can do it, he will do it, but no bolts and no holes, please!.
Merry Christmas to you and Ava. Hope you guys have a blast together. Btw, no mention of your full time job while doing all the boat work...you're amazing.
I don't have a boat, but I have the internet and opinions! I think that the way you have decided to simultaniously seal the deck hull joint and build the rail into the boat is really slick. It will be a lot of work, but it will be watertight and look really streamlined.
It's been an awesome year watching your progress on Athena. Have a wonderful holiday here in the US. I look forward to the next year of progress. Additionally, I appreciate all the hard work you do to bring us these excellent videos. Cheers.... Joe
Hi Mads, I think your new plan for the toe rail is much better than the stainless steel contraption! My Acapulco 40 has a beautiful 7 inch bulwark! My only thought is that Wood would be a great deal stronger than foam and require less Glass work. You could still glass it in but a few through bolts would make it bullet proof prior to glassing. Have a wonderful Christmas with Ava, you two should take a day trip up to my town, Ventura, as it is a beautiful little beach town. Cheers
Merry Christams to you and Ava. I have enjoyed your film clips and for somebody who says they are not a tradesman, I think you are doing equally as well if not better than a lot of boat builders. You are to be commended on the quality of your work and your film clips. I look forward to 2020 and see more action on your dream boat.Cheers Ian Langley - New Zealand
A BOILER?! You've read my mind! Moved our vagabond 47 from the Caribbean to Vancouver Island and a water based heating system is on my wish list. Having done no research... I'm stoked to see what you come up with. 👍👍
It will be sad when the DIY is finished. I watch A LOT of these youtube channels that do what you do. Unfortunately they get done with the DIY stuff and it gets really boring. With few exceptions. Like Sailing Zatara. I will say this is the best DIY boat channel I've watched. I hope you continue to find things in your travels to do that involves boat work.
Merry Christmas and I really enjoy your channel though now that I have caught up with the older vids from before I came across your channel now having to wait for the new content is depressing to say the least ...enjoy your time in LA with Ava and sure to see you in the new year... Thanks Scott B.
When you are doing the toe rail to make the hull joint better, you might want to consider also adding a rub rail to the outside. From your outside shot it isn't clear if the topsides bends backwards towards the side of the boat where the deck/topside joint is or not, but you could build out a fairly decent sized rub rail to catch any potential dings. If you are really going to build that toe rail, be sure to leave some spots for water to drain out and for you to put some large cleats (or your Genoa tracks). You might want to take a look at how Amel does their similar toe rail and topsides/deck joint. They are like submarines and never leak and they have basically done what you are contemplating.
I am geeked to see how you do that toe rail/ bulwark... Also, if you could do a little something on how all your plumbing works I'd be really interested. Thanks Mads, have a great holiday to you and Ava!
Hej Mads glædelig jul og godt nytår. Tak for all underholdningen i 2019. Hey Mads Mary Christmas and harpy new year. Thanks for all the entertainment in 2019. Se you and have a nice time in LA
And a Merry Christmas to you and Ava. Enjoy California but in moderation. Remember you have a lot of work to do so you don’t want to come back all tired out
in order to have structure for stanchions, cleats, and other rail mounted or supported fixtures, a solid core / toe rail might be in order. Merry Christmas, and a healthy, and prosperous New Year!
Good to see your plans for the toe rail. It's pretty ambitious and I think it will be a mountain of work. I agree it needs to be glassed in though with no fasteners. I seen and read a lot on the subject and there are some long term cruisers that advocate glassing it flush with no vertical bulwark at all. That would give you much quicker runoff of any heavy water. As for toerail, Ive seen the lifeline stantions used to bolt a teak board to them using SS U bolts for most of the length of the boat. That gives a couple of inches clear between the toerail and the deck for water runoff. Happy holidays
Mads, this was a great “big picture” episode. And there was tidying up too. What more could you ask for? On your toe rail, might I suggest replacing an aluminum rail and under mounting it with butyl tape? That would eliminate leaks and provide you with a much tougher hard edge for the hull-deck joint and you can tie off your fenders, secure shackles and have a much more useful and usable edge to work with. Just my 2cents.
I think retaining some DIY work to execute while you are cruising is a smart idea. As I suspect you already know, your audience will begin to change once you stop working on the boat full time and start cruising. Not everyone that is currently watching will be interested in the cruising life. Conversely, you may pick up new audience members who don't care to watch glorious sanding. :-) Happy Holidays.
Love the plans Mads 👍. That toe rail design seems like death by sanding and laying up glass! But hey you love it 😂. I would just lay strips over the joint and have a nice wooden toe rail bolted on as it will look nicer. You'll need water run off gaps / scuppers also 🤔
Our beautiful teak cap rail, which started out so nicely varnished, now after 12 years of cruising, has a beautiful white primer and gloss white paint. Who wants to spend their life varnishing exterior teak? These are long distance, hard used, cruising boats, not marina queens.
Patrick Childress Sailing - totally agree boats are for sailing and not polishing. But for me having 100 bolts through your deck hull joint is reassuring when faced with the possibility of delamination after sailing in harsh conditions where there is more stress on the hull. You can always glass in bolts to close leak paths also.
@@mxf2812 Yes, the bolts would be strong. Good point about the scuppers. Our Valiant 40 came from the factory with only one side deck drain hole on each side of the boat. I had to cut 3 scuppers through the toe rail on each side. What was the factory thinking?
You may wish to watch "SailingBritican" episodes on the issues they faced with Coppercoat. Seems they have it sorted out now. Fairwinds on your trip to the USA. Nothing goes to windward like a Boeing 757
Mads did not throw money at a boat yard contractor with questionable helpers. He applied the Coppercoat himself, with his friends, under the eye of the local Coppercoat rep. I just applied Coppercoat to our own boat and can now see some of the pitfalls that could affect the longevity if not done correctly. Even on our job, I had to take two people off of rolling on the Coppercoat and assign them other jobs.
I am glad that you show all the mundane housekeeping required for a project like this. Thanks!
Merry Christmas to you and Ava see you next year …

How is it possible there are 3 dislikes in the first 7 min this video is up? There are some really sad people out there. Your vids are awesome Mads!

Too much maintenance, trust me I have a teak toe rail! Glass over the joint and put an aluminum rail on it. Done once and done.
But then he would have to drill holes thru to install the wood, just what he’s looking to avoid!
