It's a little involved and most astrology softwares calculate it, but below I've included how to calculate the YL, which does involve some other calculations:
Determining the Year Lord
The candidates for Year Lord are called the “Five Office Bearers”.
1. The natal Lagna Lord is always a candidate for Year Lord
2. The Lagna Lord of the Solar Return chart
3. The lord of the Muntha.
4. Tri-Rasi lord
5. Lord of the Sun if the Varshaphal starts during the day, the lord of the Moon if Varshaphal is at night.
All 5 of these planets are the players of the chart. Watch the 5 candidates because they will all rule something during the year.
Selecting the Year Lord: the lord of the year is the strongest of the 5 planets that aspects the Ascendant most strongly.
Look at the Five Divisional Strengths of each of the five candidates. Note each of their aspectual values onto the Ascendant. Divide this value by 60 then multiply by its Five Divisional Strength. The planet with the most points is the Year Lord.
If that planet has less than 5 points of the Five Divisional Strengths, then that planet cannot become Year Lord. The Progressed Ascendant Lord then becomes the Year Lord. If in the rare situation all five planets aspect and there is a tie, then the Progressed Ascendant Lord becomes Year Lord. If you calculate aspects exactly, there is almost never a tie.
The Year Lord, the Muntha and the Muntha lord show the most important and significant events of the year.
How to Determine Tri-Rasi Lord
The Tri-Rasi Lord depends upon the Laga in the Solar Return Chart and whether one is born during the day or night. To determine if you were born during the day or night, look at the Sun’s position between the 1st and 7th house cusp. If it is moving toward the 7th house cusp, you were born during night and moving toward the 1st house cusp, you were born during the day.
