Her wall is beautiful, but it's only possible in her very specific conditions in her country. This is not for an American home. I know, I've lived in a tropical country myself. 1. The building materials of her wall are not sheetrock. 2. She's in a tropical country. That means more sunlight, and even amount of sunlight throughout the year. Roughly from 5:30 am to 6:00 pm. 3. She can also leave her windows open all year so she gets better ventilation. She said they get great ventilation there, so it must be a windy area. They didn't show us her windows, but I'm willing to bet she has huge glass sliding doors. Countries with temperate climates that don't use ac regularly, use different architecture that allows cross-ventilation. She probably has a fan as well. 4. Since she's not using air conditioner or heaters the air has more humidity. Additionally, the air is more naturally humid in a tropical area. The aerial roots are absorbing moisture. All this contributes to less need to irrigate. Bottom line is, she has a totally gorgeous vertical garden, not only because of her care, but also, because she has tropical plants growing in tropical conditions.
Hi, thanks for taking the time to watch the video and analyze it. As mentioned in her introduction, she is from Malaysia, and I'm featuring plant growers and enthusiasts from Malaysia since I'm Malaysian too. To provide some insights, this wall is on her duplex condominium balcony, made of concrete with regular white paint. There are no windows or sliding doors, and no fans are installed. It is an outdoor space, not the typical balcony you often see, and it's not a common sight for Malaysian homes either. In Malaysia, we do use air conditioning due to our very hot days! In fact, her aircon compressors are right in front of this living wall. Humidity can vary, especially on extremely hot days. For her balcony, since the plants are compact, it sort of creates its own micro climate. She doesn't get optimal lighting, especially in this part of the wall. There's direct morning light for less than an hour, but she installed floodlights to assist the plants in getting more light throughout the day. Her plants don’t get rained on too because there’s a roof above. It’s how highrise units are. I believe it's her careful observation of the plants that contributes to their thriving condition. While being in a tropical country helps, I think getting the plant basics right is crucial. Results can vary for everyone even in the same settings. As for watering, I’m surprised myself too because mine needs daily watering due to my garden condition. We didn't show what's beyond the balcony and surroundings due to privacy concerns, as this is her home, and we respect her decision.
humidity wise is probably not that high unless she live in a rainforest , aerial roots i find doesnt really absorb much moisture , i did notice she tend to water the wall which she never mention how many times a week , considering the pot is water 3-4 weeks once
Huh ??? once a month ? how that possible ??? her wall seem not to hold moisture , you didnt ask whats her soil mix in the beginning and the mature leaf once a month soil mix
Hey there, thanks for watching. As mentioned in the video, when the leaves grow larger, they cover the soil, reducing constant exposure to direct sunlight and slowing down water evaporation. She hasn't changed her Aroid soil mix (just top-up) since starting this wall back in Oct 2020. Whatever she's doing, based on her garden condition, the plants are thriving.
