I have an adult Arab student and he shared some parts of his life and he even showed his dad's video when he was in the hospital. 2 days prior to our 1st meeting he told me that he was praying to Allah for me to convert into Islam. Indeed it is not something religious but cultural. In some cultures it is quite normal to have friends from the opposite gender while in others, it is unacceptable. In some cases, unfortunately, there are double standards for men and women. Even in the same country,it may change from one region, social class or ethnic group to another. The best policy is to communicate your own standards openly. And don't make a big decision unless you make sure you have a good understanding of each other.
