    Hemi refers to hemispherical, or half a sphere, which is the rough shape of the piston inside the engines. The marketing department didn't just make up the word, it had been in use for decades referring to specific engines for a long time before those commercials came around. So a marketing agent demanding a "hemi" shows they don't understand why the word meant so much in the first place, you can't just give a single word decades of culture in a single marketing campaign.

    • @wylanvallotton4462
      @wylanvallotton4462 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I like how you worded this.

    • @ericwaite5179
      @ericwaite5179 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      To add to this, a hemispherical piston is more power-efficient and leads to more giddy-up in a car- typically big trucks and muscle cars use hemis to go fast.
      It’s not efficient for day to day driving, but hemisphere engines go vroom vroom… or something, I’m not actually a car guy

    • @UsernameAlreadyTaco
      @UsernameAlreadyTaco 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      To clarify, the HEMI name was coined for the second generation of these ingenious engines. They were made particularly famous by "The King" Richard Petty and the Plymouth Roadrunner that got the Hemi outlawed from NASCAR after just one season. (And yes that is the car in the movie Cars, The King was Richard Petty)
      The new Hemi isn't technically the same, since EFI has changed the game in engines, but it is still a powerful design that allows things like 2 sparks per Cylinder. All that to agree with the above comment that a marketing ploy cant create decades of association with a term and its history.

    With regard to name patterns, I think the Dresden Files is in interesting case study in intentional pattern breaking. All the books had 2 word, noir-ish, lightly wordplay names. "Grave Peril", "White Night", "Dead Beat". And then when it was time for the series to turn from detective noir and dive into more of the apocalyptic fantasy tropes, the hinge book was "Changes".

      Legit one of things I appreciate whenever I go back and read them. There is something intrinsically appealing when a series uses word play as its titles to draw you in as a reader.

    • @sterlingmuse5808
      @sterlingmuse5808 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Changes does so much more than that though. It really rocks the series off its hinges in every way. I don't think I've read or watched anything else that was more deserving of a title like that without literally changing everything about the series, because that book manages to keep most of the things that worked in spite of the changes.

      Another fun fact: The male lead of "What's Up, Doc?"... is a doctor. While the plot revolves around the female lead rather nosily poking into his business and even directly asking him the title question at one point. Hence the reason it's called that. Because that's what the movie's about and that's how titles work.

    I have to disagree with Brandon's comment around 19:00. Titles of mid-series works can absolutely bring in new readers. I in fact decided to read Mistborn in the first place because of the title "The Alloy of Law," which I saw while perusing the library shelves. I was hooked by the idea of a metal-based magic system but I didn't want to start midway through the series (that was how it was advertised at the time, rather than as the start of a separate series) so I ended up looking for the actual Mistborn 1.
    I can think of a number of times this has happened to me, usually with titles which pique one of my hobby interests. Books which reference chess would be another good example.

    • @hallaloth3112
      @hallaloth3112 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree with that. A introducee to a series may not see the first book on the shelf, but they may see the third or fourth and be interested enough from the title to at least look at it, read the synopsis (hopefully) notice it is a series and hunt down the first book.

      Interesting. Alloy of Law was the first 100% Brandon book I read. I read his Wheel of Time books and saw Alloy of Law, Tried it, and devoured everything else available at the time from him. I didn't realize it was a middle book at the time and still think of it as its own series in the same world.

    Food Heist!
    In ww2 sugar was rationed.
    My dad worked for his uncle during ww2. He was just a boy. One day he walked into his uncle's office and there in his office were 2 men in suits.
    "That's a lot of sugar stamps", one said pointing to a pile of sugar stamps on the desk.
    My dad replied, "That is nothing you should look in the file cabinet."
    The 2 F.B.I. agents DID look in the file cabinet... And they also looked in the back room where my great uncle had a printing press that he used to print the sugar stamps.
    If dad was still alive he would still be like, "My uncle kept several restaurants open. No one would of gone to a restaurant if they didn't have sugar for the food. That food would taste bad. He was a good man."
    My reply was' always "Umm dad sugar was a rationed because of the war he went to prison because he was a criminal."
    Dad would then reply, "Baa there wasn't a shortage, why we unloaded train car full of sugar."
    Me -facepalm-

    The best thing about A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum was that it wasn't JUST being classically vaudevillian, the entire structure of the play was based off of Roman farces. It includes basically all of the tropes that were common, including a wily slave MC who helps conspire to get his lovestruck master together with the girl, and chaos ensues.

    I think the best cartoon catchphrase is "sufferin' succotash" I specifically want it as the title of a Robin Hobb Fitz book adaptation. As far as a few real good book names I love Christopher Ruocchio's first two Suneater book tiles, Empire of Silence and Howling Dark. To fit with Dan's Makeover book name being changed, cause of possible confusion, I believe a brilliant book titled "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" would probably get changed now.They would probably think people would be dumb enough to confuse it as a real guide book.

Is it kind of like telling the audience that you are entering a new act in a play like or an intermission? I know have seen the device in many varied books such as Lord of the Rings, Bourne Identity, Jurassic Park, Treasure Island, Stormlight Archive, etc. but then not used in others such as Count of Monte Cristo. When and why is it used rather than just sticking with chapters? Thanks!

    The problem with light novel titles is that they're chasing an algorithm. It's like if youtube titles used a string of words about the actual topic of the video, but also used words to suggest as many other popular topics as possible.
