Krall is the most under-respected jazz vocalist / pianist. She is extremely gifted and talented. Paired with Tony B. you only catch shades of her talents. Her voice is on target.
She’s not a ‘Jazz vocalist .’ She was told “you won’t be able to make it just playing the piano but if you sing with your looks we’ll give you a deal...”
I played on the Tonight Show once and imagining this delicate old legend traveling to the studio and getting in the building etc seems nuts. And that stage is small and crowded and getting up there is dark, so sketch. I'm sure he was handled with utmost care and special accommodations and I'm sure he enjoyed the experience but it's really bustling there even during the hours they shoot musical acts. I don't think people truly understand how being onstage is like 10% of the experience. This makes me want to write a book about celebrities in their old age. I worked on a show with Florence Henderson and Cloris Leachman in 2015 and they seemed so delicate in person. Just human beings.
If you like Diana Krall, check out Eliane Elias (she and her trio have lots of videos on YTube). She's a fantastic Brazilian pianist/vocalist in a similar vein, but she tends to swing a little harder than Diana, and also does a lot of bossa nova in addition to standards and classic tunes. And like Diana, she's beautiful too!
The only thing that could have made it better is if Mr. Diana Krall (Elvis Costello) was playing guitar with them...no disrespect to the marvelous player doing this set.
