Probably if we place our selves in between the contacts !

I would have thought spray would be useless without pressure or scrubbing, but I guess this must be a rather dry location .

Employing a fixed-spray nozzle system operating at low pressure, typically 700 kPa to 1100 kPa (7 to
11 bar / 100 psi to 160 psi), used primarily in areas where frequent washing is required.
Fixed-spray nozzle washing has proven to be effective in preventing sea-salt contamination flashover
problems. Therefore, most fixed-spray nozzle installations are used in or near seacoast areas, mainly
to remove sea-salt contamination. Because of the low pressure and spray nozzle system, the
effectiveness in removing non-soluble contaminants, other than sea salt, is diminished.
This method can also be used for soluble contaminants that are found inland. The wash parameters
and equipment must be developed and established for each installation.
High pressure water (and spray nozzle system), is required in removing non-soluble contaminants,
      other than sea salt.

nice solution to clean dirty imsulators never see this on a 400 kv system

Thanks Samantha, actually we can clean up to 765kV Substation without power outage.

    Deionized water correct?

Yes, water has to be treated before use

Why would you do this in energized state? If the connection was so vital it couldn't be turned of, it should have been constructed n-1.

Old comment, but they have to be able to handle rain and anything else mother nature throws at them while energized. There is no reason to turn them off or add cost for an n+1 system just for cleaning.

Dust, salt, and other contaminants on the surface are pretty conductive at 400kV. This causes arcing, which unevenly heats the ceramic insulator, possibly damaging it. If the insulator fails, the substation basically blows up.
