Teresa Berganza should give master classes in giving master classes! She is so disarmingly honest, AND funny, in a nice way. Her little smooch to the pianist is irresistible, she is all enthusiasm, warmth and generosity. An excellent advice to the talented mezzo, direct attack on the final top note!
I'm surprised because mezzos typically develop later, but this mezzo has a beautiful voice and to me sounds like one of the best out of all these masterclasses.
I'm glad to know Ms Berganza is leaving behind her the legacy of one of the most spotless techniques ever heard on the stage. As a singer in training I also love the opportunity to watch her while teaching: I feel I have the opportunity to "steal" a little from her though her pupils here are at a far more advanced level than I. Thank you for posting
Back in the 1960s Von Karajan called Teresa Berganza the greatest living Mezzosopranist. I have a 1960s LP of hers, singing Mozart. My favourites on it are Non so piu & Voi, che sapete, from her part as Cherubino in the Marriage of Figaro.
@Webarton I do agree, what's most important is to have the accurate sense of the shape of the note and vowel inside your head (physically and mentally). How open your mouth is from the outside is of secondary importance, or irrelevant as long as the sound is being properly produced.
I believe (scusami che scrivo en inglese, e piu facile) that Berganza is recommending that she form an "a" vowel inside so as to place the note with an open throat, as Margot says. If you notice, it sounds like an 'o' as she sings it anyway. Berganza,of course, would know the words, but I am sure she practices as she preaches; I sing this aria too and find that when I form the "o" closer to an "a" it is much easier to sing - and still sounds like an "o!"
Another thing I notice in this great class is her modelling of the 'inner smile' that is so helpful to singers who have difficulty opening up inside. It helps to lift the muscles that are dragging down so that the upper resonant cavities can open up.
I agree. I do the same thing too. Although, its not recommended to put the techinques to practice once you actually have a solid foundation (singing techinque and the basic raw talent there).
its so hard to teach a student in one lesson how to really use the face. she keeps opening vertically instead of hitting the notes horizontally. it is difficult to understand, it takes practice
I love her AND her ideas, but she should let the singer perform the aria once straight through, instead of interrupting (à la horrible Schwarzkopf). On the other hand, her humour is first-rate & adorable.
Berganza should let the student always sing an aria through before interrupting. After that, she can jump all over the performance (if not the singer:!)
Yep, but she did relax a lot when Teresa modeled the sixteenth notes for her and showed her she didn't need to work so hard. I'm sure she has been able to fix that since!
This is RIVETING! That mezzo is fantastic, she picks everything up so quickly and sings so carefully and disciplinedly. Wonderful!
Unfortunately

Thanks for writing the pianist's name. It's always important.

Brava maestra! Saludos desde Croacia!
she's so cute and energetic!! great teacher!!
Divine Berganza!!!
dios, qué energía tiene esta mujer
Now that is vocal training. It's a shame it's hard to find this type of pure technique in the States.
Be happy

Berganza es una gran maestra.

What struck me while watching this was the massive amount of similarities between my own teacher and Ms. Berganza.
She has an extremely magnetic personality-no wonder she is a great master of teaching too
Catastrophy

Bravo corepetitore!
yeah Mezzo Rocks!
une voce poco fa, this is a hard aria!!!!
Great :) !!!

I like this students' warm, rich voice very much. Thank you. Are there any Masterclasses with Teresa in English? I'm an American.
ebaytimr I’m American too & follow in French or Spanish. Learn a few languages, enrich your appreciation of foreign cultures & languages.
Listen to Berganza still sing like an explosion of beauty all over the room!
what a lovely woman she is
Yes I agree! There is another video on TH-cam with Dame Kiri explaining the same technique to a soprano singing "Porgi Amor". Feels MUCH easier
Another bad soprano
Love Teresa's little wink at 2:05
BRAVA TERESA!!!SWEETY WOMAN!!!BUT VERY STRONG CHARACTER!!!BRAVAAA!!!
🎼♥️
except, Thomas, she is a mezzo soprano. Do they tend to stand a certain way also?
I'm a sop and I don't stand how Thomas says. lol.

😂😂😂😂😂
can anyone translate it in English pls?It wld be a big help.
Lindoro...Lindoro. Non è Lindor, ma LINDORO. Per cantare Rossini serve una grandissima precisione
Great Teresa Berganza the Best Mezzosoprano Coloratura of all times
ahahahaha.
😆😆😆😆😆

D.E.P
I would give anything, ANYTHING, for a lesson with her!
Naiara Schervinski right there with you!
voce in gola
woo maestra berganza es genial

The student should pay more attention to BERGANZA
Language is usually the greatest problem for singers. Lindoro with no d, Vincero with no n.
Nice voice, but I don't care for her embellishments, & she is a little heavy in the coloratura.
its so hard to teach a student in one lesson how to really use the face. she keeps opening vertically instead of hitting the notes horizontally. it is difficult to understand, it takes practice
I love her AND her ideas, but she should let the singer perform the aria once straight through, instead of interrupting (à la horrible Schwarzkopf). On the other hand, her humour is first-rate & adorable.
You don’t know much about teaching, don’t you?
th-cam.com/video/ZtTHXm7GW78/w-d-xo.html
Berganza should let the student always sing an aria through before interrupting. After that, she can jump all over the performance (if not the singer:!)
a bad singer teaching her flaws. Shame on her!
student uses too much muscle
Yep, but she did relax a lot when Teresa modeled the sixteenth notes for her and showed her she didn't need to work so hard. I'm sure she has been able to fix that since!
