It's basically the 'McDonald's hot coffee' thing where they do a whole bunch of PR to make you think the case was frivolous, they are the victims in this situation and you should hate the person who won without looking at why they won. The fact that Russ has featured the bit in multiple videos, shows how well the technique works.

Her burns were absolutely HORRIFIC, down to the bone in some areas and given where they were in her "lap" she must have spent months, if not years, in agony. Then, to be mocked constantly by people who hadn't even bothered to do the most basic research, just added insult to injury. McDs had been ignoring complaints that their coffee was too hot for years, multiple people had already been burned and it was the actual judge in the case that awarded that sum. I think it was meant to be symbolic, something like 1 day's or 1 week's coffee sales from all McDs. The woman and her legal team had asked for nothing like it. From memory they had only asked for enough to cover her hospital costs.
