    Social media era has killed music. People don’t want to know about you. They only care for themselves. People want you to know about you and tell them in the music. You can’t talk your way to talent. You should work on your craft. Fans find you. You don’t need to find fans.
    It’s all about the sound. The up and coming artist should craft a sound. Stop trying to chase the crowd. Make shit you like.

    • @SW4444G
      @SW4444G 2 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      The first half of the comment is really bad advice. There are literally thousands of new artists promoting themselves and their music each day, so it’s difficult for fans to find you solely based on you releasing music.
      Given that we’re in the social media era, social media is the main way that fans/A&Rs/labels etc. discover new artists. Having your own sound is critical for longevity, but that’s still only a fraction of developing a fan base. It’s like the “If a tree falls in the forest and no one hears it, does it make a sound?” scenario. Just because you create and release unique music, doesn’t automatically mean people will find it.

      "Fans find you, You don't need to find fans", that is terrible advice in this social media age. You have to put yourself in front of people for them to discover you, you don't only have to put out music but also engaging and interesting social media content that will make people actually care to check out your music . Focusing on your sound alone won't cut it unless you plan to be a starving artist. Someone with half your talent who leverages social media will surpass you with that mentality.

      Ppl are saying ur wrong but ur not…ur right. Fans will find u…this is all energy and if ur making a sound and a look thats new and gravitates ppl toward it then u’ll b successful. Trying to follow the tactics that everyone is following in the industry is stupid when nothing in the industry is good…everybodys brand is shallow, corny, monotonous and bland.
      U gotta focus on a look and a sound…thats the most important thing.

  • @MightyMonk360

    It’s hard becoming successful without giving up your privacy, and privacy is priceless being able to go to the grocery store without being followed by strangers is something we take for granted when we haven’t made a name for ourselves. Sometimes you get everything you wanted but later realized the things you truly valued that you had to lose or sacrifice along the way wasn’t really worth it. Whatever you do, think carefully and choose wisely, as it’s one of those decisions that will shape your future and affect the rest of your life in ways you can’t imagine nor ever change back. Nonetheless, there are no opportunities without taking risks.

    Bryson Tiller lowkey perfected this mystery persona early on in his career. After "Trapsoul" took off, he did interviews without showing his face but people already knew how he looked so it worked. He kept it going for a while due to his introverted personality, but now he's embraced being a bit more out there.

      @@sozeytozey well he’s since put out two more albums, and some other music that didn’t make waves the way Trapsoul did. Most people are casual fans, so once the masses failed to hype them up, they went a little under the radar, especially the second one. Ironically fans are always in his comments asking for more, and casual fans reminisce on Trapsoul.

    • @sozeytozey
      @sozeytozey 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MONET8iAM I agree with you, but that's sorta why I disagree with the original comment. Had he really mastered the mystique, the hype wouldn't have died down as quickly and even once it had a bit, the newer albums should have been a bump. Think Frank Ocean with Channel Orange and Blond, or Chance with Acid Rap then Coloring Book. Not that Chance was going for mystery, but still, his market never went away. Could Bryson have another break into the mainstream, certainly, like you said people reminisce over Trapsoul. I just don't think it's the greatest example of a successful attempt, or perfection of the persona.
      Edit: Also idk if social media comments are the greatest barometer for demand. I'd assume most artists, new and old, have comments asking about new music

    • @MONET8iAM
      @MONET8iAM 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@sozeytozey they do, but it has to do with how often they release music. People release music at an excessive rate these days, so the ones that don’t constantly have beggars in their comments. Even when Tiller’s baby was born they were doing that when he’s made it pretty clear that he focuses heavily on his personal life. Same with Rihanna, no she has taken very long to release music, to even do a feature, but she has multiple businesses she’s running after having a lengthy music career.

    • @kristhomas8295
      @kristhomas8295 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sozeytozey Also what separates Frank Ocean and Chance from him are uniqueness. Trapsoul was able to capture a sound that already was existed and was upcoming, but he happened to release it to the mainstream before the others. That album was a catalyst and set a standard for modern rnb, giving Bryson some heavy competition very quickly. He didn't do anything new in his last two projects and really should've named then Trapsoul 2 & 3. Chance and Frank rely on lacing their sound with elements from the past, which helps them to standout from the rest in addition to being mystique/mysterious.

Their music isn’t that special and they themselves aren’t either (imo) because we see them every single day, their daily lives, photoshoots, etc. But with artists like Frank, Bey, Sade, Rihanna, their music feels differently because of their mystique-ness and I have vowed that as I grow my fan base, this is what I will remain. another thing to consider too, and i'm sure there's mad points on this, is the desire to actually have a music career over "wanting to make great music or art" - which overlap in some ways but have completely different financial and circumstantial outcomes. i often find that british and UK artists in all genres tend to lean towards a side of not sharing as much in the way american/western artists function (i'm thinking artists off the XL recordings roster, and similar but i know there's more) - There's a certain headspace and luxury that euro artists have in the sense that they can be much far more removed from the information/social landscape and less concerned about their relevancy than american artists do. it's a much broader conversation, mostly about money, culture, social landscapes, etc, how much is enough for some artists to live comfortably, etc. this video is great nonetheless

    Pinkpantheress (and other mystique/mystery artists) does this by having people run fanpages for her, sending unreleased music to fan pages, and sending pictures to fan discords where her fans are ALWAYS talking about her
    Also has mystery tiktok accounts where she posts snippets outside of her main account
    The following is a story that will help some understand more in-depth.
    Usually I introduce myself to everyone when working at a new restaurant. Helps people know who I am and that I'm about my work as well.
    But this time I didn't.
    This time I only focused on having a few key people that I joked around with, had fun with, and genuinely talked to.
    Later on in the night, I see a small group of female co-workers giggling and looking at me as I work.
    One of the managers who was talking with them called me over and asked me a question.
    I don't remember what the question was, but I told a joke and they all started giggling again.
    And then I went back to my work.
    One of my people said to me "Ladies man!" to which I just gave a smirk, and I could feel that people were all the more interested in who I was because of it.
    Real ones will understand what I'm saying by all of this.

Their brand matters beyond the novelty of mystery and most people don’t care that much. Fans enjoy them without a constant question of Daft Punk’s identity.
      I have a video dropping soon that explains this but one of the main things that mess artists up is not understanding that mystery itself doesn’t have enough substance to sustain a fans attention. In the vast majority of cases, Mystery should not be the brand itself but a tool the brand uses.

      Fortunately his music hit so strong at the beginning that he has a respect from that does not require as strong of a public brand positioning to last.
      And all it takes is another hit record and a move or two he’ll be able to establish a strong mystique if he wants to.

      Yes, but to the point I made...it's more expensive to do it that way. You don't see unsigned artists accomplishing that today for an extended period of time.

    Sean I've seen you talk about this for years and use the extreme examples but what about artists that arent necessarily "mysterious" but are just somewhat aloof, inaccessible, theres an allure to them?
    Of course Kendrick works as an example but Biggie, Nas, Jay Z, DMX even, they weren't mysterious but they generated more interest than they satisfied if that makes sense. You wanted to get more.

      Great question. Those individuals are a branch of Mystique. Understanding the relationship of how you move between known, mystique and mystery is key. I'm touching deeper on that in the post coming next Monday.

    Buckethead is a good example,
    He has an entire backstory, and we only know his backstory because of other musicians he performed with who sang about him,
    He never spoke, so he relied on singers telling stories about him,
    Buckethead, the robotic guitar god, seeking revenge on colonel sanders for killing his chicken brethren, he brings a Santa bag full of toys for his audience
    (I'm butchering this, but this is about how wacky his backstory is,
    But he was also a virtuoso, his unique sound developed by researching scales that most closely resembled a malfunctioning computer noise, and learning to tap with all four strumming fingers,)
    You need your style/character, develop your unique sound, become a virtuoso,
    Then, appear and perform for bands, and be memorable. Have social media, maybe put your name on your costume,
    Honestly if you're a virtuoso, people would rather see you in a goofy costume anyways.
    Don't believe me? Look at the top female pop artists, they are 25% silicone and wearing garbage....lol
