He won a Oscar for War propaganda. Big Deal. Most movie producers back then won for War Propaganda, Racism and Sexism, e.g. Walt Disney, Warner Bros, Howard Hughes to name a few.
So....from what I gather from this video, Dr. Seuss was a man of his time and as flawed and imperfect as the rest of us. And yet so many of the people in this thread are screaming down from their "moral highground" about what a terrible person the guy was. Seriously? For facts ten to two, none of that was in anyway surprising or even offensive. Pretty much everyone was racist to some extent back then, and the war propaganda was run of the mill during that time as well. As for the racey images, not liking children, etc; I'm not even going to waste my time arguing against points like those being used as ammunition against his character. It's not fair to hold the people of then to our standards today. By all rights, in the time that he lived, he was an honest, patriotic man with his own unique, quirks. The same as anyone. And as for the final one, his affair. That's the only one I'm willing to given *any* ground for. He cheated on his wife of many decades during terminal illness. There's very little anyone could say to defend those kinds of actions. With that said, is this really worth crucifying the man over? Looked at with some level of nuance, his affair was hardly some uncaring fling he just decided to have because he didn't love his wife. From everything available, it's pretty clear he cheated during the one of the hardest times of his life: taking care of his ailing wife. Anyone who's cared for a loved one knows intimately that this can be incredibly draining, both emotionally and physically. It's no surprise that eventually he found himself falling prey to another woman. Of course, as I said, this doesn't even *slightly* excuse him, but some of you people are all but demonizing Dr. Seuss for mistakes many of you may have made in similar circumstances. One mistake shouldn't be used as a weapon to ruin and demolish the entirety of a person's accomplishments or be used to represent their whole character.

I happen to be reading a biography of Theodore Geisel right now. He and his first wife very much wanted children, and it was painful to them that they were not able to have any. His often repeated statement that others could have the children and he would write for them was a flip way of responding to questions about having children while covering up that pain. He commented on different occasions that he didn’t feel a particular connection to children. Part of the reason he got into writing children’s books was that it didn’t violate his contract with Standard Oil, as many other kinds of writing would have. Still not an excuse for what he did. Was Pol Pot or Stalin living in their time, when they genocided their people? Though this may be an extreme example, I must seriously ask the question.
@@th3azscorpio it’s not an extreme example. Two things can be true at the same time. There is a spectrum. What someone chooses to do within their circumstances and what they’re taught based on their experiences throughout their life is always a possibility. And it may defy right and wrong.
Dr Seuss liked to make kids happy with his books he just had no interest in being a father. Lots of people do careers related to kids but have none or no desire for a family of their own.
Audrey Geisel remains the owner of the Suess estate to this day, and has final say on what adaptations can be made on his work and claims executive producer credit on them. Famously she even refused further live-action movie adaptations after The Cat In The Hat bombed.
Who saw that coming? It's really sad he was such a racist!!! In that era his exploits of different races probably seemed normal but I'm certain it probably didn't fly with the majority or I'm hoping it didn't. That's me shaking my head in disbelief. I would not have faired well in that era. I was the one voicing the my opinion of the injustices back then. And I'm so glad I was not born back then 😡
I think "Didn't like kids" is simplifying him too much. I'd say he wasn't that interested in people in general, kids or adults - by most accounts he liked to keep to himself and some close friends. That's a little different from hating children. He wrote very eloquently about why he respected children's minds more than most adults he knew. If you watch his underrated feature film The 5000 Fingers of Dr. T you'll see how much respect and understanding he had of children's minds.
Actually several of these things aren't all that shocking if you've seen the In Search of Dr. Suess documentary. Kathy Lane the main reporter and audience surrogate of that little movie, even stated with surprise, "Suess was busted for cocktails?" And that that war propaganda film was actually shown in a shorten version at some point in Kathy's trip, leading to point out how some of this stuff was pretty intense for its time
I am 67, made it through my childhood, my parents believe in the belt or the hickory stick, and I made it out just find. I doubt either of my parents read his books, and I did not read it while I raised 3 daughters. They made it just find two.
What does the first half have to do with this video? The first half can be assumed by your age, fyi. We have evolved as a society to disapprove of that stuff. You also don't have to read Dr. Seuss to turn out fine.
I can't believe Dr. Seuss was racist. I loved his book The Cat in the Hat. He was #1 in the children's literature cannon for a long time. He was a popular children's author too!
The examples given of him not liking children doesn't mean he didn't like children. He just didn't want any of them of his own. That doesn't mean you don't like children. There are plenty of teachers who love kids, but would just prefer to personally not have any. I know a few. You don't go into teaching if you don't like them!! Sure as hell not for the $$. As I like to tell my friends I love their kids. I spoil them rotten, make them love me and then return them to mommy and daddy. :)
Honestly TV Tropes already told me about #1. Well I know about the stuff on the list, none of the stuff on the list ruins my childhood. And remember just like Walt Disney, he was as American in his time and several of his cartoons made during wartime seen as racist by today's standards was more acceptable back then
He is like Steve Jobs, we idolise them from what we see and hear from media and their contribution to society but we dont know the real them since we really dont care about it.
The thing is that racist depictions of Japanese are terrible my grandma is Japanese, but the depictions of them during wwii has to have a bit of dignity because we were at war with them, We had depictions a of stupid sauerkraut eaters aswell
He did actually change his ways about racism as seen in the ww2 propaganda cartoon of him that had Uncle Sam saying “Listen maestro ... if you want to get real harmony, use the black keys as well as white!”

Yup.
I think he liked being an uncle to his niece more than anything
That lady who was joking about mistaking him for a " Dr" during his younger years is the source for grinch drawing and dr suess character
One thing -- drinking alcohol wasn't against the law during Prohibition.
He wasn’t a doctor yeah ik same with jill biden
Bro really said 1 wife 2 wife dead wife new Wife
Audrey Geisel remains the owner of the Suess estate to this day, and has final say on what adaptations can be made on his work and claims executive producer credit on them. Famously she even refused further live-action movie adaptations after The Cat In The Hat bombed.

She passed away last December
@@dakotahmays1437 News to me.
@@dakotahmays1437May she rest in peace.
And I'm so glad I was not born back then 😡
Wendy O'dell
While his earlier cartoons did have racist content, there is evidence that later in his life he regretted making them
I think "Didn't like kids" is simplifying him too much.
''He didn't seem to like kids, or billy goats for that matter!" Seuss, in private, would never use the gauche ''kids',' rather the formal children
Actually several of these things aren't all that shocking if you've seen the In Search of Dr. Suess documentary. Kathy Lane the main reporter and audience surrogate of that little movie, even stated with surprise, "Suess was busted for cocktails?" And that that war propaganda film was actually shown in a shorten version at some point in Kathy's trip, leading to point out how some of this stuff was pretty intense for its time
Dr. Seuss invented the word "nerd" (IF I RAN THE ZOO.)
Dr. Seuss didn't like kids, eh? At least he wasn't mean to them. :)
Since they did the grinch in 2018 why he can't CAT in the HAT 2022
How has this narrator made it to adulthood and never heard of a PhD?
i kind of knew this but this deep
I am 67, made it through my childhood, my parents believe in the belt or the hickory stick, and I made it out just find. I doubt either of my parents read his books, and I did not read it while I raised 3 daughters. They made it just find two.
What does the first half have to do with this video?
The first half can be assumed by your age, fyi. We have evolved as a society to disapprove of that stuff.
You also don't have to read Dr. Seuss to turn out fine.
It’s hard to believe that fox in socks was penned by this guy.
I can't believe Dr. Seuss was racist. I loved his book The Cat in the Hat. He was #1 in the children's literature cannon for a long time. He was a popular children's author too!
Yeah the one that shocked me the most is that he did like kids, quite ironic that he wrote for the demographic that he himself was not to fond of.
That's how I am. I love my nieces & nephews to death but I know I'm not cut out to be a mom.
he really said “1 bitch, 2 bitch, dead bitch, new bitch” 😂
Even if this stuff is truth I still love him no matter what because he’s and incredible man that revolutionized children’s books
very very good list I like it a lot great job mis mojo
Ah come on! I just ordered Dr. Seuss books!
Wow this girl hasn’t even graduated yet lol she doesn’t no the difference between a PhD and a medical doctor
The irony naming it boners, a frivolous error indeed.
Dr. Seuss? More like Dr. Sus.
I’ll allow it.
I still love his work and everything that has been inspired by his work
Bro I’m sure he loved kids, he just didn’t want one. Nothing wrong with that
Do one on John Lennon. He was a horrible man, child abuser, wife beater, cheater, and a hypocrite on peace.
I share a birthday with him and I read a bunch of his books throughout my childhood...
Honestly TV Tropes already told me about #1. Well I know about the stuff on the list, none of the stuff on the list ruins my childhood. And remember just like Walt Disney, he was as American in his time and several of his cartoons made during wartime seen as racist by today's standards was more acceptable back then
I still LOVE Dr. Seuss!
Good point.
He didn't like children.
*Excuse me what?*
I come from ERB , just want to see how good their makeup was...
My childhood died at #2 😳
I've known several people called Dr. who have no medical licenses. One worked at my boarding school.
Why do they make the faces of the who's and the cat in cat in the hat have like a rat-like face its always been funny to me 😂
He did actually change his ways about racism as seen in the ww2 propaganda cartoon of him that had Uncle Sam saying “Listen maestro ... if you want to get real harmony, use the black keys as well as white!”
I didn’t see 10 facts and my childhood is definitely not ruined by this. I don’t think he’s a racist…I think it was funny
Pfp checks out
So you think racism is funny
