JD I've told you my most proud moment as an American. I was stationed just over the border at Spangdahlem AB in Germany. My friends and I went to the 40th Anniversary of the Battle in Dec '84 to Bastogne. On Sat night they had a parade through town. My friends and I were walking along the sidewalk next to the honor guard with the flags. Older Belgians stood in their doorway and were applauding and crying at the sight of our flag. Still gives me goosebumps!!!
That's pretty fricken awesome. I hope to retrace Easy Co's trek Normandy to Berchtesgaden, where most of Easy Company as it was, would go there seperate was. Good question for you JD, do you know what became of Easy Co. After more or less Police duties in Berchtesgaden?
@TheHistoryUnderground if I remember right now, Didn't Ron Spears go on ac the CO of Easy for a cpl of years until I know he was promoted to Major and was involved in our actions in Korea
We visited Bastone in September 2022 and literally "bumped" into 101st Airbourne Easy Companys medic Doc Roe's daughter. Our chairs got tangled up sitting back-to-back in a small restaurant in McAuliffe square. We had a great time asking her about her father experiences during and adjusting to civilian life after the war. Very grateful to have met her and her husband.
What a moment to run into General Middleton's grandson to show him that receipt!! That's so cool!! The fact that he sounded so proud of his grandfather's accomplishments is really awesome because I could hear it in his voice to the point that I could tell he was about to cry any second. Thank you, General Middleton for helping to save Bastogne!!
I suspect, but not entirely sure, that the 665th Engineer and Topographic Company, which my father was in printed those in Bastogne. The 665th was in Bastogne prior to the Bulge with 8 Corps where they had a mobile truck fleet of equipment for aerial photography interpretation, surveying and map making. They also did a lot of photography as one of the guys took a lot of photos of their journey and would print out/hand out copies for everyone. We realized the families all had the same photographs they sent back when the fmailies got together and compared scrapbooks a few years ago. They were pulled out of Bastogne to Neuf Château to protect the equipment but moved back into the town after the siege. I do know the 665th made a number of campaign maps for various units after the war along with their own company map and I suspect the 2 page 8 Corps map. My family stayed in touch with the family he stayed with in Bastogne prior to the bulge after the war; along with the copy my Dad saved of the memorandum, I also found a copy of a commemorative flier handed out by the Belgium Tourism Board and hand dated July 4, 1946 signed by the Belgium family to my grandmother.
My grand uncle Mariano Bravo served with the 101st in WW2, never got the chance to ask questions but saw some pictures on his walls and found his video cameras and cameras he carried into war in his closets. Tio Mariano returned to La Puente California with his wife "Lula" (Alday) Bravo and four kids Jesse, David, Maryann and Debra, retiring to Phelan California in his later years. Thank you for your service Tio, you were our John Wayne.
Thanks Erik for sharing this certificate/receipt, from January 1945 when the 101st Airborne turned the city over General Middleton after Bastogne liberated. And his Grandson was present.
J.D great surprise to both of you to find out the grandson of General Middleton was there at the same time you both were and got to met him as well. Awesome!
Boy did you guys get lucky but it shows that things like this happen for a reason - to honor the work you both do in highlighting the legacy of the greatest generation and their sacrifices for our freedoms.
I donated my father's "Nuts" plaque that he was given to the museum at Camp Toccoa in Currahee, Ga. He served as a sergeant scout with the 101st. I had no idea what these men went through.
I know I'm running late when one of JD's videos drops and I'm still in the gym 😅 Pretty cool artifact. Erik was real careful to say his grandson could hold on to it... for a second 😉
You have to do a video series covering the Battles for Elsenborn Ridge: The Twin Villages, Lausdell Crossroads, Bütgenbach. Also the Battle of Heartbreak Crossroad at Wahlersheid in the Monschau Forest days leading up to the Battle of the Bulge.
Wonderful sharing of this special day & celebration! Great to see the film of all. I too am wondering how the instruments appeared....great a marching band was included! And what a treat to meet the grandson! I realize this is thought of as a coincidence, but I believe happenings like this one are God giggles.....but that's just me.😊
God Bless all the countries (soldiers) who fought against a fascist~~When I was stationed in Europe in the 80s/90s, many of the older folks, loved our presences, and talked about WW2! I felt proud to be an American, and never forgot who made the ultimate sacrafice~~
Charles E Hughes late of the Timberwolves. 180 plus days on the front to be shot in the ass. He said it was the only part of him he couldn't get under his steel pot. My dad was in the Mighty 8th. They both ended up in the local N/G unit and then reactivated for Korea. Gone but not forgotten.
I never noticed until now how the exhaust was routed on our Army trucks and jeeps. Out the side or down towards the ground. Harder for the enemy to spot.
Wow that was cool, but JD I must tell you I do not believe in coincidences. I am a firm believer in God-ordained meetings and surely this was one. Thank you for all you do to educate, honor, remember and inspire. God bless!
Judging by Gen. Middleton’s grandson’s asinine remarks referring to General Pancho Villa as a “bandit” it’s obvious the man does not know everything about his grandfather as he claims otherwise he would know that Mexican General Francisco Villa was not only a Heroic Freedom Fighter but also a military genius who outwitted General Pershing, Lt. Patton along with Middleton himself in their fruitless pursuit of General Villa whom they never captured. This was simply because Gen. Villa had turned the horseshoes backwards on his troops’ horses and had the Americans going in circles trying to find him. A man with no formal military education defeated the West Point graduates with a simple trick which they would never forget!
my grandmother the only thing she told me about that War - was the best day of the war and she said of course freedom day and than she said no D_Day then we knew that the war would end and than she said we were not allowed to celebrate it so we did it in secret
My grandfather was an underage soldier during ww2, and from what little I have, I believe he was in Bastogne and with the 101st. Is there any way to find records on underage soldiers? They seem to "not exist". Love your channel and the stories, I have learned so much.
Sesual assault celebrations too: "German historian Miriam Gebhardt suggests a number as high as 190,000 r's by American soldiers out of an estimated total of 860,000 by all allied soldiers."

That was no coincidence!!! I believe things like this happen for a reason and sometimes we know why and sometimes we don't. Simply amazing!!!
My uncle, Web Raduenz was in the 101st and was one of the bastards of Bastogne.
The stories he told were amazing

I had lunch at three restaurant behind Derek last summer. Also it appears that large, star-shaped war memorial is never going to be fixed and reopened
great video thank you

My grandfather served in the army for WWII. He was in the engineer corps. Do you know how I could get information on his activity through the war?
Not one mention of NUTS bar - interesting 😆
I want to know when all those streets and roads finally got paved…
Good question.
Ive always wondered what happened to the decendants of guys like Middleton and McCauliff.
Hello @TheHistoryUnderground, I mean that you stood in Bastogne in front of the museum where Hitler stood. In which video was that again?

Or didn’t he want it announced?
We didn’t ask so we opted to keep it private.

How did the 101st celebrate? Much like soldiers celebrate to this day: wine, women and song.
