  • I learned so much from J.D. Huitt during a recent trip to Normandy. For those of you who already follow his channel, ‪@TheHistoryUnderground‬ you know J.D. has a unique way of sharing history with his audience - I can confirm this in person as well! He brought us to so many places we could've easily missed, like this German bunker near the Normandy American Cemetery, perched above Omaha Beach. I quickly put a mic on him to catch some of what he was sharing in an impromptu interview ~ I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

I'm a long time sub of JDs. Love his channel and all that he shares with us. Wonderful human being! I have been lucky to have visited Normandy. My grandpa fought there, lost his leg in N France, Sept '44. My dad is an AF vet, I'm an AF vet. I love how much JD gives praise to those who sacrificed so much for ALL of us! Safe travels.

I was at Normandy for the 75th anniversary and our tour guide did an amazing job but I’ve learned immensely from JD and Paul Woodage.

Must’ve been terrifying for the German solders manning those bunkers. At sunrise to look out and see thousands of ships and then the bombardment started.

Good point on the position of the bunkers. Anyone who ever served in the services may understand the positions of foxholes. So that each man is firing out the corner of the foxhole, usually two with an embankment in on their side. Their field of fire is cutting diagonally across in front of the neighboring foxhole, as likewise the neighboring foxhole field of fire is front of theirs. As a solders the concept was hard to understand, but I think now it makes more sense.

I've got a bullet round, which has to be US, that I was fortunate enough to find down in the sand by the concrete at that very same bunkers main gun port. Under the Engineer memorial, that's the same bunker, back in 85.

When I first read your comment, I misread it as "I've got a bullet wound".. I am so glad my eyes need a break. Your comment is way much cooler.

Not taking away anything from courageous leaders such as Cota and Dawson, one has to remember the vital close fire support from USS navy destroyers, some of whom beached themselves to pour enormous amounts of gunfire into these gun positions to save the infantry.
Which they did. I don’t believe the landings on Omaha would have succeeded without their help.

      Wasn't that the mg position?
Which, in fact, is very close to this gun position, now notable for the US combat engineer memorial erected atop.
If you're at the Omaha cemetery, looking seaward, it's to your right, just down in the dunes, above the 'draw'.
