This video was sublimely, almost transcendentally good. I can't believe it's taken me so long to find Vintage Keys Studio's channel, but boy, am I glad I did. Pure old-school music technological happiness. Thank you, Mr Christie. 🙏
Loved this, I've been thinking of a proper tape system .... it's inspiring me. Nearly fell off my chair when your midi controller stand collapsed - bravo!
The first time I was let loose on a three head tape recorder, I connected a mic & headphones and invited friends & family to try and speak while hearing the delay. Much hilarity ensued. This old fart loves messing around with tape too! Another great video, as always. Cheers!
Honestly, I didn't know how the tape echo & delay exactly works, until now. Thanks for revealing that mystery! Position 11:24 shows how cluster harmonics were discovered - another question answered ;-)! All the best :-)!
I have recently been on a reel-to-reel kick... and bought a couple to restore (one actually works though). Great content that someone could use to create some vintage effects for a project. Interesting, informative, and entertaining and I did laugh out loud, keep sharing... Thank you!
Thank you Steve, tape delays and spring reverbs are all we need. Man, you are ready for Dub from the roots🦁. Smells like old fart spirit 🥸. Oh, and love the way you performed that m-audio's stunt thing👍
Loved this! Sadly I think I stopped learning when analogue became unfashionable. Loved the tape echo, of course live we would use the Watkins Copicat, you probably have one somewhere. The reel to reel vintage twilight zone and Dr Who, or perhaps Dr Chris was fabulous as was your ‘made up tune’. Thank you!
Well done! Important to show the bedroom baseball hats what we used to get up to with our Akai 4000s and acetate to get sounds like those on All Along the Watchtower, Dr Who theme music and Terry Riley’s Rainbow in Curved Air. Our analogue musical world required the use of art and physics in almost equal measure. You must surely have an old WEM Copicat box with four playback heads somewhere in your studio emporium for your echo Part II demo. I mean where would all those early 70s guitarists have got to without their Copicats?
Thank you for this! Really love these studio workshop videos. The mighty Akai 4000D still gets much use around here, as well! Would one of the upcoming videos be on tape phasing/flanging? Certainly a reminder of what tape is, is needed for posterior and posterity. Regarding machine maintenance, how often are tape heads resurfaced, usually, in a working studio like yours? Kind regards, and thanks again for the organic class!
Ty- Love your knowledge and presentation’s.🎧 we use to do this with a Tascam 3340S with 10” reels. Unfortunately I no longer have this machine or the Studer half track stereo unit.
@@VintageKeysStudio i still have some 10” pancake reels stored tails out since the 80’s. I have no idea if they’ve oxidized or if there’s any info still left on them. 🎧
@@VintageKeysStudio That would be great , if it’s not too much trouble taking the machine apart though. I once tried using a variable power supply but it just kept cutting out altogether.
A nice follow up would be... Use your Fostex 8- recorder to create longer decay times or even a multi-tap delay with rhythm intervals lika a Binson echo-rec 😀
My word, I doubt there's a better way I could have spent those twenty minutes. I'll continue with my day slightly nourished on many levels.

Thank you very much indeed! The pleasure is all mine! :)
What Great and Professional Demonstration of this Tape Echo /Delay, performed by the very talented Engineer and Musician Steve Christie.
Thank you very much indeed! :)
Loved this, I've been thinking of a proper tape system .... it's inspiring me. Nearly fell off my chair when your midi controller stand collapsed - bravo!
You can do it! - thanks. I meant to do that…
Perfect demonstration.
Thank you! :)
Thank you, that was great. I learned something and had a laugh too. Totally appreciated :)
So glad! Thank you!

Brilliant - that’s the first thing we did too! My dad got me to do that! Fantastic!
Mac & Cheese is my favourite piece of music of the week.
Great stuff, I am a big fan of tape delay and appreciate the in depth explanation I also want mac and cheese now.
Thank you very much - yes nothing like a Mac and cheese!
Honestly, I didn't know how the tape echo & delay exactly works, until now. Thanks for revealing that mystery! Position 11:24 shows how cluster harmonics were discovered - another question answered ;-)! All the best :-)!
Glad to assist in your education!! Thank you very much :)

Thankyou Dr. Charles…. a most “honorable” explanation.
Ah, a new video - I shall watch this without delay.......
Hahaha
Thank you Steve, tape delays and spring reverbs are all we need.
Man, you are ready for Dub from the roots🦁.
Smells like old fart spirit 🥸.
Oh, and love the way you performed that m-audio's stunt thing👍
Thank you! Yes it was a cool m-audio stunt wasn’t it? I am really into Dub - I would love if I could just talk with Dub echo on my voice all the time

Thank you! :) Yes we have access to one of the old valve copicats and the later one. Will do a video sometime.
Delightful demonstration, Sir!
Love tape delay...I've got an echoplex and space echo. There's nothing else like it.

Yes two copicat boxes! One valve and one layer one. Both in for repair at present, but will appear soon hopefully. Also a Tel Ray AdnEco

Thank you! Yes we are going to do an update video on flanging etc very soon!
I almost bought that exact tape machine at a thrift shop. 9:14 I believe it had some defects though, and I passed it by.
Very short, but wonderfully organic, is tape delay

Thank you! Yes, the machines take a lot of maintenance to keep them working

11:25 didn't see that coming! 😂
I also like to understand, but alas I am of the small brain too. Great vid though! It made me understand tape echo's a bit more.
18:09 *sings Telstar* Waaaaah wah-waaaaah wah wah-wah-wah-wah-waaaaah 😄
Good rundown, thanks, and have you done a vid about that rack and controller?
Not yet! Coming up at some point
Very interesting demonstration. Also, what is source of that nice piano sound? Sounds good when played and when dropped.
It was just the standard Steinway sound on Logic - came out well though
I wish you could remember how you built your vari-speed box. Sounded great slowed right down.
I will work it out and do a video very soon - it was a bit of a cheat really, but I need to take the machine to pieces to remember
@@VintageKeysStudio That would be great , if it’s not too much trouble taking the machine apart though. I once tried using a variable power supply but it just kept cutting out altogether.
Swooshy. It’s Star Trek beam me up scottys aplenty. Or most episodes of dr who in the 70s. I loved Jon Pertwee.
Oh yes dear Jon Pertwee
A poo undo occurred in an episode of red dwarf. It happened to the Cat character. You should have seen the look on his face.
I like the degration of the sound of real tape echo's
Ooooh I like the swooshy and saturation effects very sci-fi . I have a question, how does this differ from flanging?
Quite a lot different to flanging - there will be some follow up videos soon about various tape techniques, including flanging
@@VintageKeysStudio I look forward to future effects videos
I like delay… Ay…. Ay…. Ay…..
Two different Pooh references.🎉
I am well known for my hefty happy Poohs
Which desk is that?
