    I grow Spanish Roja Garlic every year and they are a large and flavorful hard neck variety. Great results.

    I've been growing German Red variety for a few years now - I love it! It is a hard-neck. I am in northern Illinois, USA - so our winters do get very cold (even up to -25C for a few days). I mulch my garlic with a good layer of straw right after planting to keep it warmer during the winter months, and I've been letting it sprout and grow keeping the straw mulch on it - it keeps it moist and mostly weed-free. I do braid mine too - as long as the hard stems aren't too dry, it can still be pliable enough to braid. German Red has lasted me a full year in storage provided good storing conditions (it does get a bit soft by the end, but still edible).

    Thank you for sharing. I've been growing garlic for many years myself. We do have an occasional problem with the cloves rotting in the ground. To help fight this we have found that soaking them overnight in rubbing alcohol helps reduce the bacteria causing them to rot. I also grow them organically saving the best bulbs to replant.

      I am trying to get my head around this method as Garlic is already anti microbial but cannot resist everything. If going to chemical treat them why not use Hydrogen peroxide. It kills bacteria and helps give a little boost of oxygen to the roots. Alcohol would be damaging I would think to an extent. Best wishes

    I am growing garlic for the first time this year. I went with Inchelium Red based on reviews I was reading online. I ended up buying some to cook with from a farmer's market after I had ordered the seed garlic, and I absolutely loved it. It's going to be hard waiting almost a whole year for a harvest!

      Hi Alda. Fellow canadian gardener here. 😄 I grew garlic in ground last year for the first time ever, and it did pretty well. Now, I was wondering if it would be a good idea to grow it this year in my raised beds or will it freeze and rot? Are you growing your garlic inground or in raised beds? Cheers from Quebec. 😊

      @aldas3831 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@monikaabledowska2756 Hi Monica! I tried it in raised bed and only half of the garlic germinated. Is better if you can grow it in the ground. Or raised beds that are very shallow to the grownd. My bed is like two feet high and half froze. Mind you we had a very cold winter last year. This October I planted it in the ground. Fingers crossed! Good luck to you!

    Hi USA California here, I believe your giant garlic head may be Elephant Garlic When you harvest, little yellow tiny cloves should be on the head, towards the bottom. You plant those and first year forms a clove the second year grows the head of garlic. It is a milder garlic than most.We love it.

    Uh-oh, I've already planted mine, but I've put them in really quite deep. Up until this year, like you, I've planted them close to the surface, but have been disappointed with the results.
    I must have been watching Monty on GW a few weeks ago and (I'm sure) he put his in a lot deeper; a good couple of inches...so this time this is what I've done.
    I guess seeing as my garlic has always been a little feeble this will be interesting.
    I'll let you know...

    Great timing. I will be growing garlic for the first time this year and I am wondering what do I put in my raised beds? They are empty, so do I used bagged soil, bagged compost, bagged rotted manure, or a combination? I do intend to empty my tomato grow bags into them and reuse that soil, but that will probably be half. So, maybe do I do compost.manure for the other half? I grew elephant garlic from the nursery last year and it was expensive for just 3 cloves and only one split. I will be replanting the 2 mono bulbs, but I am doing my own experiment with 2 heads of grocery store elephant garlic. I figured I have a nothing to lose as it was much much cheaper and Baker Creek, where I bought my garlic, was out of elephant garlic every time I checked. I can't remember the variety names but I got one bag of hard neck and one bag of soft. Later I will check and update with the names. Thanks!

      Hi Gayla, Ideally you should get your raised bed filled with a mixture of top soil, garden compost or manure, and an aerating/drainage material. That can be pumice, perlite, or fine gravel. If you don't have time to do that, plant your garlic in modules as I describe in this piece and then plant out in spring: lovelygreens.com/how-to-grow-organic-garlic/
      Good luck with the elephant garlic and let us know how you get on with it.

      Garden compost and rotted/composted manure is all that I use as a soil amendment. Specifically replacing minerals in soil such as P isn't something that the majority of people need to do. Keep it simple and try not to overthink it :)

    I have had a problem with rust on my garlic the last two years. Any suggestions!

    • @jangrouwstra3927
      @jangrouwstra3927 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If growing in an area where Alliums are grown continuously, rust will not go away. There's no remedy for it, but the best thing you can do is plant late. If growing in a climate like in the video, October planting will mean foliage appearing already in autumn for most garlic. That foliage will be old in spring and more susceptible to any diseases, and rust will appear sooner. If planting, say, early December, the foliage will still be more vigorous in spring and have better resistance against rust. The bulbs starting to grow is only affected by day length, so your planting date doesn't affect your harvest date much, and in the region of the video the bulbs will only start to grow the at end of April. At that moment you want your garlic plants to look their best.

    Hello, I'm looking for advice. It is my first time growing garlic.
    I planted garlic 10/8/22 in zone 7a from the grocery store.
    Look like they are doing well. They are hard neck cause I just cut scapes off 5/3/23 & leaves are starting to brown & die off.
    Seems like a little early, but maybe not.
    Looks like the first two bottom leaves have turned brown & died off. Waiting for the next two leaves brown & die off, then ready to harvest if I understand correctly
    Having problem getting pic posted.

      They’ll stay that way until next spring and then begin growing again. You’ve given them a head start on next year by planting them in autumn. They’re also very hardy - no need to cover them unless you have regular sub-zero temperatures.
