    Hello, it's Deb here. I live here in Kansas in the central United States. Our first date is May 15th. I'm getting a late start on my seedlings this year because my daughter got a cat and I cannot put any of my ceilings throughout any windows in the house. I have one window in my bedroom it only gets Evening Sun. So I purchased a grow light from Amazon that looks similar to your one that has the arms on it. They have the red and blue lights that can be adjusted for brightness as well as turning off one color or the other , or and you can turn on one or more of the arms. I still have yet to pick out a couple of my smaller tomatoes , as well as the different varieties of cherry tomatoes. the only pack I have to start with this year is the beefsteak Type of tomato which are my favorites. I love the acidity in them. Good luck on your garden take care and God bless Deb

      It does sound like we have the same grow light. They really do help to grow healthy seedlings on practically any window sill. Best of luck with your beefsteak tomatoes this year Deb. Thanks for dropping by :)

    As jealous as I am that you've already got seedlings up and growing, it is nice for me to be able to see different youtubers starting their seeds and get ideas before I'm ready to start mine. I'm in Northern Illinois, USA and I don't usually start my tomato seeds until mid-March.

      Almost time to sow your seeds then :)

    Hi Tanya, I would of used 6" deep pots and planted them all up to the seed leaves. The stem in the soil would then also sprout roots and give you a stronger plant.

      I'm a little limited for space but yes, they would do really well in 6-inchers without having to be repotted. I'll probably have to repot mine on in a few weeks but by that time I'll just have 5-10 plants :)

    Just started my seeds...planted 3 tomatoes each in a single pot with the plan to thin them. Thanks for this, I may decide to plant out the extras to give away...hopefully my tomatoes germinate as well as yours!

    i'm totally with you on saving every little seedling, I'm way too soft too and consequently have over stocked all the time!
    I've had ours growing under a lamp and inside for a couple weeks, but just put them out into the greenhouse this weekend in a propagator, and am heating it over night with a flowerpot candle setup, so far so good!

      It's sad isn't it? It's better to be ruthless but with the seed swap coming up I know I'll be able to find homes for the extras.

      @@anafindlay1696 a quick google for flowerpot candle pops a instructables on how to do it - lots of 'its a hoax' posts too, but i thought i have lots of candles and some pots so may as well try it - if it creates a radiant heater for even a little bit its better than nothing :) i've certainly not been scientific about it - heck my min max thermometer doesnt even work :)

    Hi Tanya, I’ve quite a few tomato plants in my unheated greenhouse, but each plant is covered by a 2 L lemonade bottle which creates a mini greenhouse inside the greenhouse. They seem to do ok. Also I have made a 100 hour candle in a bigger jar which i learned from Tony from UK here we grow. It brings up the temperature to around 10 degrees. I have no growing lights but I learned from HGV, Home grown Veg to put a pop bottle over the plant with white paper over the back half which reflects the light. It does help to let them grow up straight. Eveline in D&G

      All interesting tips - I’ll probably have a heat source going when I plant the tomatoes and aubergines out next month. Another tip is to fill a rubbish bin with water and keep it in the greenhouse. During the day it absorbs warmth which it releases slowly overnight.

      Lovely Greens hi Tanya, when I have the 2nd 4 x 6 glass greenhouse up I will have space for a bin, but not at the moment. How big do you think the bin needs to be?

    My tomatoes that I started indoor are starting to go outside in winter sowing plastic jugs that I’m trying for first time. The first plant out has survived so far! It’s just getting too messy inside and it’s fun making little greenhouses for outside and to make use of those plastic jugs.

    Tomatoes are one of the first things I plant too, but for completely opposite reasons! I'm on the central east coast of Australia and it's still too hot to plant most things, but tomatoes are ok. We can only grow larger tomatoes from autumn to winter, because in spring and summer they get destroyed by fruit fly. I can't wait for April when it will be cool enough to plant everything else out!

    The tomatoes look great! The thing I love about tomatoes is you can bury practically the whole plant and they'll come back healthier than ever. It's one of those vegetables that's not a problem if it gets a bit leggy.

    Won't be starting my tomato seeds until middle or maybe latter part of March, we have snow and ice which is not leaving anytime soon. I do however have onions, peppers, peas, marigolds and alyssums doing fantastic under lights and heat mats in the house. It is so hard to wait in starting my tomato seeds....come on spring get going!! Great video's Tanya. :-)

    Hi Tanya, thanks for another great video.
    The seedling in the centre of the pot that you didn't prick out, did you leave that in the same 50/50 compost and perlite mix, or did you add any more multi-purpose compost at all?

    When can I put my plant in the unheated green house. Like pepper tomato beans guard plant. I did in the hours it al in my wind seal now at the moment

    • @Extragonk
      @Extragonk 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      i put mine out this weekend just gone, ne england, i did put them inside another propagator though to give them double protection

    • @Lovelygreens
      @Lovelygreens  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      In an unheated greenhouse you'll need a source of warmth for tender seedlings like peppers and tomatoes. At least this time of the year. A heat mat with a propagator lid will help keep them warm. Without added warmth in places like Britain, the seedlings are likely to perish. I plant my tomato plants out in to my completely unheated greenhouse in mid-April.

    A butter knife would work for pricking them out too. Not having highly specialized equipment for every task is part of the "Reduce" in the five R's.

    G'day from Oz. Just came across your videos. Like your presentation. Curious to know if you are American or Canadian. I ask, because of the way you pronounce tomato. It's not the way a typical American pronounces it. Just curious. Keep up the good videos.
