I got this game at 9 years old in 2005, and I must have played at least 1,000 hours of it. I still have my PS2 copy to hopefully fire up again one day. The gameplay is so smooth, and you can feel the heart and effort the developers put into it. Now I can look back and appreciate it as the best baseball video game ever made. Legendary game. The mid-2000s were definitely the golden age of sports games. The last ten years have been a wasteland, by comparison. The games now have less features than the games from 15-20 years ago.
I had this game on Gamecube. I played 2004 and then 2005 was memorable for me because I was 17, I had just met who I would marry and still be married to. Me and my younger uncle played all day before we grew a part after I left at 18 (2006). Times back then seemed good with family alive and playing baseball outside and on the game system. And yea, the soundtrack was amazing!
I have played literally THOUSANDS of games of MVP Baseball 2005 as the Texas Rangers. Not even counting the hours spent on the minigames. I built the custom stadium. I loved every minute of it. Took it to law school with me. Stopped playing around 2014.
The Hitter's Eye was a game changer, and I wish more games had used it. It definitely made it easier to hit guys that didn't hide the ball throughout their delivery (Hideo Nomo was super easy to read and prepare for because he didn't hide the ball and he had such a slow wind up). Me and my college roommate ran through multiple dynasty seasons on this game. Hands down the best baseball game ever made. Even the mini games to upgrade your guys in the offseason were cool and appropriately challenging. The mystery to find undervalued guys due to name changes was fun too. Ole Uttlesein was Cole Hamels, and we always managed to snag him cheaper than he should have gone from the Phillies. man, the memories are flooding back. Playing the deepest owner mode was some of the most baseball video game fun I can remember. The only "rival" before this in my mind was All Star Baseball, but that is only because it had what this game sadly didn't- same team multiplayer. Being able to sit 3-4 of us down in front of my PS2 to assign who controlled which guys in the field and at bat was fun, and I wish MVP Baseball had done that as well.
amazing game. one of the best owner modes ever. also introduced me to The Bravery and Hot Hot Heat which dominated my later middle school years. MVP 05 for life
I think the hitting mechanics are so underrated compared to today, the perfect blend of easy to grasp and not be too easy to dominate with. It felt very balanced. Will always be a game I'll play regardless of the year. Lovely presentation, commentary and and overall feel to a baseball game
great vid kofi thanks -- one thing since I am old so I remember - Bonds is not in the game because while he was actually in the MLBPA (for instance he appeared in Strat-o-Matic and other licensed products) he had a special clause in his contract which specified all video game deals featuring his likeness had to be cut with him individually. EA didn't want to pay an extra Bonds tax. Funnily enough -- nowadays all the former players featured in MLB The Show have to have individual agreements for their name and likeness. This means of course that Bonds could some day, theoretically, show up in a modern baseball game. It won't happen of course, but it would be something...
I didn't grow up with baseball nor this game but I began watching in '15 and picked up this game back in 2020. It's awesome. It has some personality and depth that was lost in the transition from the ps2/gc era. It reminded me of old FIFAs which I had tons of fun in manager mode, but this game is actually still fun to play and gameplay really holds up. Everything feels responsive and explosive, which The Show nowadays doesn't. It's really a masterpiece for sports games, not just nostalgia kicking in
one minor detail i really loved about this game is how they let you change individual pitches' trajectory, so some guys could throw sliders with more vertical drop and some threw them with more left to right motion. made each pitcher more unique. wish newer baseball games would implement some ability to change pitch shape like that
I started emulating on my PC specifically to play MVP bb 2005. This is one of the cases where something is just legitimately perfect. You don’t have to learn how to play this game, the systems used to emulate baseball are so natural feeling that your brain just goes “oh yeah that makes sense”. Another cool thing is how many unique voice lines there are. As a white Sox fan, the first thing I did in this game was play against the cubs and bean every hitter. There’s unique voice lines going all the way until you hit like your eighth batter. This is in contrast to today where there might be 2-3 on repeat. Love this game, and love your stuff Kofie.
Really great video on this game. I have seen various videos that take a documentary approach but it was really refreshing to see your love for the game come through. Also you showed so much more than most videos, stuff I had forgotten. This was such a fun game to run a franchise through, it came out my freshman year of college and a group of us played the hell out of some of those mini games. Fun times, and of course as you stated online was starting to become a thing too. Great video, great channel! Oh and I think Boone went so early because that was the season he had like 140 RBI and won a Gold Glove. Ichiro is the pick as you stated but I think Boone had that crazy season and had a high rating. I'll stop now, sorry for the novel, lol.
still playing this! Trying to keep the A's in Oakland and rebuild their stadium while staying competitive! Deep playoff runs are crucial to making money for stadium expansion!
Best way to play this great game is on the PC and using the tons of great season mods on MVP Mods. While Super Mega Baseball is great in it's own right, I hope it starts a return to MVP. Great video Kofie
The old MLB 2K were great, I loved all the little unnecessary flourishes like the skybox in the franchise mode and Jon Miller and Joe Morgan (RIP) doing the play by play were great despite the tech limitations.
@@QuarrelsomeLocalOaf yes!! the skybox was awesome, you can play air hockey n darts also it showed your collections like all your trophies you’d win, truly made you feel like what you did mattered
The adjusting the batter in the box inside & out was a fantastic feature in the game, robbing home runs animation was pretty good as well. Hitters eye was a cool thing too. I also like how it's hard to hit even on all star.
Absolutely one of the best baseball games for its time, and heck it still shows how detailed and fun it was to play. Idk why but I to this day still remember every franchise mode that adding a rookie Oliver Perez on the Padres at the time would give your team a cy young candidate for 20 years haha, he was basically a cheat code prospect. He was so fun to watch on the pirates after I found about him from this game.
This soundtrack, the show 07’s soundtrack, and madden 07s soundtrack stick in my head to this day. I was age 13-15 during those years so it makes total sense psychologically.
I played this a couple days ago before I saw this video. It's incredible how fun & realistic the pitching & fielding is still to this day. The pitch speed moves pretty real-time with realistic movement.
Im so happy you showed us more of the game instead of just gameplay, I forgot how many features this game had and how amazing it really was. I cant remember the name but I remember there was a cheat code where if you named your created player a specific name it was no matter what a home run lol. Thanks for bringing back all of the memories! Edit: It was Erik Kiss and it was actually in MVP Baseball 2003 not 2005!
Ironically, today this came up in my suggested viewing and I just said to my wife (who was my girlfriend in 2005) I told her I dorked out at work this past week and listened to the MVP Baseball playlist on Ytube. She has it burned in her brain just like me for listening to them over and over. Glad you covered the songs at the beginning of the video. She also quotes the announcers occasionally when we watch baseball games. "You can't hit the ball without swinging the bat meat!" The college games aren't bad but the soundtracks don't exist on them like this game.
It's realistic for being that old it's fun and the pitch speed is realistic & good movement, fielding animations like robbing HR & diving catches, adjusting batter in the box all good features.
i’m trying to find this baseball game that had the old reds stadium and the intro to games always showed the construction to new stadium in the background, but idk which game it was. when you won the world series i remember you’d have a real celebration not the wack mlb the show one we have now. i remember the cardinals also had their old stadium. just can’t remember if it was this game or all star baseball or which one😞
Smooth gameplay, great soundtrack, as in depth or as shallow of a dynasty mode as you want. Also, for me as a kid, going from easy to hall of fame as I grew up and got better at games was satisfying af
I bought a custom Jon Dowd jersey a few years ago because I love this game so much. There likely will never be a better, more feature-rich baseball game. And bruh, that Tulane jersey 🔥🔥🔥
Great game and great video. Love seeing Kofie play through these all time greats! But can I just say - bro just reads the numbers off the screen without really knowing players and baseball all that well - but that just goes to show how awesome the game really was! Even more casual fans, who were more gamer oriented could still love it just as much as hardcore baseball nuts.
The I Roc Z song's band (The High Speed Scene) were also MASSIVELY underrated and they never got big. At least the Donots and Zutons got a little music attention.
I loved that game and would still play it if I could. The only thing it was missing for me, if I remember correctly, was you couldn't be multiple teams and that was all I wanted. Could be wrong though, might have been the year or two before. Also, like every baseball game ever made, I could not hit a sinker to save my life. If the pitcher threw a bunch of sinkers I was hopeless.
My copy of MVP baseball 2005 is strange. The cover says MVP baseball 2005 but the spine just says MVP baseball. No 2005 on spine. Idk looked around the net and couldn't find anything about it. So I guess I got some rare label error cover. Cool I think.
Not being able to get MVP Baseball 2005 running on modern PCs is the definition of pain. Seeing all the amazing modern rosters and mods people have made to the game but being unable to play them since I don't have a Windows XP computer hurts so much.
@@MooseFromDiscord I've looked into it, but apparently the game runs really poorly on VMs which is a shame. It's been a few years since I've looked into it, though, maybe someone's found some workarounds to that issue
