    When you play the footage backwards you have to be sure no birds are in the shot.

    The cooler air temperature in the morning can also make a significant difference. Very cold temperatures make the sun more red "higher" in the sky. The red colour goes away at lower "heights" in warmer weather. This is just an observation I made growing up on the extraordinarily cold Canadian prairies. The shape of the clouds can vary in the morning and evening and you are more likely to see high altitude contrails in the evening than in the morning. In very cold weather, you can also see multiple images of the sun (when the sun is "higher" in the sky).

    In the southern hemisphere, the sun rises in the east, and moves up and left to the north. So you could play a northern hemisphere sunset backwards and call it a southern hemisphere sunrise.

    I love to post images of sunrises and sunsets, and sometimes they are not labeled as such... And, so in my effort to find out how I could discern the difference on my own, I came across your video! Thank you for taking the time to explore the topic at hand and for shedding some light on a fascinating query! I am pleased to know that I was able to identify five of the six images correctly before even learning the tips you highlighted!

      He's talking about the usage in a film, where, when everything plays in the northern hemisphere, this would be noticable. In the southern hemisphere, it would go the other way around, but this is also in the footage. In conclusion, wherever you are, you have to mirror the reversed sunset

  • @Duplicity75

    The sun moves to the left on the southern hemisphere. End it is directly coming up on sunrise and down on sunset in equator

    • @piteoswaldo
      @piteoswaldo 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      But only at the equinox. On the summer solstice, the sun will be coming straight up at the tropics, and at an angle at the equator. I live south of the tropic of Capricorn, so the sun always moves left here no matter the day of the year, but between the tropics the question is more complex.

  • @Kbroadd1

    The first point about how your eyes see the sunset/ sunrise is interesting but 1) some people have night jobs & sleep during the day so this would likely not hold for them, and 2) if you're just looking at a photograph it doesn't help you figure it out. Thanks for another fun video!

    The sun moves to the left (counter-clockwise) in the Southern hemisphere and to the right (clockwise) in the Northern hemisphere. So at 2:42, it could be a sunrise in Australia (example).

      thembones5 , Mr. Random is right on this one. Try it in that USA if yours. Look north during sunrise, especially during the summer months. If it still rises from left to right. You probably have two left hands.

    • @filipbiaonski9764
      @filipbiaonski9764 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      thembones5 No it wouldn't! If You're in Australia for example, You're looking north to see the sun, while when You're in Paris, You're looking south. Hence the apparent sun movement in Australia is counterclockwise. :-)

  • @eyesofphysics97
    @eyesofphysics97 10 ปีที่แล้ว +43

    That last point you mentioned is only true in the northern hemisphere, though. The sun goes from east to west closer to the south only during any time in the northern hemisphere, especially during winter. In the southern hemisphere, the sun moves from east to west across the northern half of the sky (again, especially during winter in July), just like your "fake" reversed footage.

    • @AlanKey86

    • @eyesofphysics97

      HaHa! I thought the same until in our astronomy class last year, we mapped out where the sunsets are using pictures, and recorded the arc of the sun over the sky every few days for a number of weeks. Although your point still remains firm because most footages like this probably were just reversed because they were most likely taken in the northern hemisphere.

    • @NicolasUnger

    • @Agent009B
      @Agent009B 10 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Javier Reyna
      Depends on the time of year. At the equator, there is always 12 hrs of day and 12 hrs of night (approximately... there is a bit of twilight at dusk and dawn.)
      If it were summer, then the sun would rise in the east and be 23 degrees away from being directly over head at noon, but in the north and of course set in the west. In the winter it would be reversed from that. It would rise in the east, and then at noon it would be 23 degrees in the south from being directly overhead and again set in the west. ;)
      During the fall however, it would rise in the east and slightly to the north and set in the west slightly in the south and be directly overhead around noon.
      Spring is similar to fall, but in reverse, it would rise in the east and slightly to the south and set in the west slightly in the north and again, be directly overhead around noon. ;)
      If you really want to see how it works yourself, get a ball and mark lines of latitude on them and tilt the ball at 23 degrees. Then shine a light on it and you will see exactly what I just explained. ;)

    If you would measure the wavelengths of the incoming light, the doppler-effect will cause a slight red-shift at sunset and a slight blue-shift at sunrise. So this could be another way to measure the difference.

    • @Agent009B
      @Agent009B 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is completely wrong. A red-shift or blue shift only occurs when an object that emits light (like a star) is either moving away from us, or moving towards us.
      The sun is neither moving away or towards us, we are in orbit around it, so there is no Doppler effect from the sun.

    • @kakashi12309
      @kakashi12309 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agent009B The Doppler effect occurs whether the emitter is moving towards/away from us or when we move towards/away from it. Consider the rotation of the Earth. An observer at a location that is moving towards the sunlit side of Earth (experiences sunrise) is moving towards the Sun. The result is a blueshift. An observer at a location moving towards the night side (sunset) moves away from the Sun and a b̶l̶u̶e̶s̶h̶i̶f̶t̶ redshift occurs. Note that the Doppler effect caused by Earth's rotation is greater at the equator than at the poles.
      Although we orbit the Sun, our distance to it is not fixed because Earth's orbit is an ellipse. Thus, we can consider the following: Earth moving towards perihelion (which contributes a blueshift) or moving towards aphelion (which results in a redshift).

    • @Agent009B
      @Agent009B 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well even if that is true, we are only moving at most at 1100 mph at the equator... the further away from the equator you get, the slower you are moving. That's hardly significant to cause a red or blue shift when light moves at 186,000 miles per second. I'd be very surprised if it is at all noticeable. Perhaps detectable with equipment, but not with your eyes.

    • @Rheainstoun
      @Rheainstoun 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agent009B Uh, when you are on the equator, you are not even moving away from the sun, you are spinning around, the major movement "away " from the sun is at sunset/night when you are at 60-90 °angle from the sun, so if there is a minor measurable sign of Doppler effect that can be calculated with equipment we cannot see it because the sun is hidden.

    • @Rheainstoun
      @Rheainstoun 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rheainstoun Thing is noticed over the years is that the morning skies are much more blue, clearer. The sunset is almost always surrounded with clouds/moisture. But that is perhaps something that you observed as well... cheers.

    Also the earth is colder and has to heat up so any picture with a low haze like number one has a cold surface so is most likely a sunrise.
