      Interesting so they used an existing truck cab. That would definitely help them proceed more quickly. All they need do is integrate the electric powertrain and any other mechanicals related to it. And provide the instrumentation in the cab that would be required. Not saying that that's a small task. But at least it eliminates them having to deal with the basic structural stuff.
      The only thing I noticed in the test drive was that only the front axle is powered and I think they mentioned that it's direct drive. That could pose a problem in certain places. I often found it necessary to engage the differential lock. That engages the rear axle also. Occasionally you'll run into a dock or a roadway that is at a steep angle. And as the truck turns weight will come off one of the wheels. Unless you can lock that rear axle in you'll end up spinning one of the drive tires. Probably could mitigate this with either limited slip differential in the drive axle. Or perhaps they have two separate drive motors one for each wheel providing traction control.

      Well that explains why it's so complete smooth and well made.
      Honestly I think Tesla bought to think about doing this too. The variety of different types of trucks in the United States is rather extensive. I often think that Tesla along with making their own truck, should offer the powertrain and integrated technologies to existing truck manufacturers. Let Kenworth have Tesla electric drive as one of the power plant options on their trucks. That's how it works currently. You can buy a Peterbilt or a Kenworth with a Cummins or a Mercedes or other engine choices. Along with a variety of transmissions, rear axle ratios. And all sorts of different options.
      Be a lot less complex for Tesla simply to make powertrain and battery packs and let the truck manufacturers that already know how to build a truck well to integrate that into their existing vehicles.

    It's a battery electric truck with a hydrogen fuel cell. Swap out the fuel cell for a bigger battery and it's a better truck instantly. It will handle exactly the same, because it already is a battery electric truck. You don't lose any performance, torque, or driving characteristics. But you can charge it anywhere with a wall socket and getting more megawatt fast chargers in place will happen a lot sooner than getting hydrogen fueling infrastructure in place.
    Also, the person from Nikola mentioned this is the only truck with 500 mile range. I think Tesla has a few of those on the roads as well so that's simply a lie. They were pretty vocal about that when they launched those earlier this year. Semi 8, 80 tonnes, and all the rest. This is not apples and oranges. They are both battery electric trucks. The only difference is the size of the battery. Volvo has battery electrical trucks on the road as well in the same class. A bit less range but that should be fixable. Just add a bit more battery.
    Good on Nikola that they sold a few trucks though. But they now need to prove operational cost is going to be competitive with just pure battery electric. That's an uphill battle. This video makes a great point that battery elecric trucks (with or without fuel cells) are the future. But the jury is very much out on whether you charge the battery with a fuel cell or just a cable. The only difference is going to be the size of the battery and the cost of the fuel vs. the electricity. Or the sustainability of the whole thing. The hydrogen going into these things is unlikely to be the expensive and elusive green variety for quite some time. We're talking good old methane converted into hydrogen here. And lots of it. Not sustainable at all. Wasteful even. You're better off just using the methane directly as a fuel. Much less emissions that way.
    With companies like this you need to watch what they are careful to not talk about: where does the hydrogen come from? What does it cost per mile? Who is going to build the infrastructure? They are being very hand wavy on this. They'll drive a truck out with hydrogen to fuel trucks. It's going to be great. So would that be hydrogen cooled to a 20 degrees kelivin in liquid form that is "only" 2.5 times more voluminous than lng? Or would that be compressed gas instead which is more like 18 times more voluminous. Never mind comparing this to diesel fuel trucks, There are a few issue lurking there. And Sandy is very well aware of those and yet chooses to not talk about them.

    • @JillesvanGurp
      @JillesvanGurp ปีที่แล้ว

      @@awesometwitchy Much less than you seem to think. Also hydrogen infrastructure weighs a lot. So the net weight increase isn't that large. Certainly not relative to the overall weight of the truck. Electrical trucks in every weight class are already on the road. They actually have electrical road trains in Australia that are far larger than is allowed on the roads elsewhere. These are converted Ice trucks where the batteries slot in where the fuel used to go. They can actually swap these in a couple of minutes with a fork lift truck. Range is something like > 300 miles. These can go up to 200+ tonnes.
      Electrical trucks work in any weight class. No exceptions. There is no special class of truck where only hydrogen can do the job. Even range is not a limiting factor. You can always use more battery. A few tonnes goes a long way. It just adds cost.
      As for legal and safe constraints; those are two things. The legal ones are based on the inherently poor performance of ICE trucks. They really struggle at low speeds; or uphill. Or downhill. Electrical trucks are superior in circumstances where Ice trucks become unsafe. More torque at any speed, regenerative breaking in mountains instead of overheating brakes, no need for gazillions of gears, etc.

    • @brianb-p6586
      @brianb-p6586 ปีที่แล้ว

      It has a single rear drive axle, also known as a 6X2 since it has tag axle.
      The Nikola version in the USA has dual tires on the tag axle, making it look like it is driven unless you look closely; the IVECO version in Europe has single tires on the tag axle, making the 6X2 configuration more apparently. 6X2 with singles on the tag axle are common in Europe, but very rare here except on large buses.
      Yes, all that power is to one axle. Search online for FPTindustrial and their eDriveline, model "eAX 840-R", to see the electrically powered axle provided by IVECO's FPT division. The Tre BEV apparently isn't using the full peak power of this unit, presumably due to battery limitations.

Shifting gears is learned in a month. Electric motor will assist in controlling the vehicle, which is good. Please speak with a truck driver or two (with 10 years of experience or so). There is a lot to driving than going straight down a highway. Turning, backing, bad roads, dealing with other vehicles make up most of the downsides of trucking. all I can find is the statement of getting a 70% charge in 30 minutes.
      which assuming a battery size of 850 kWh = an average output of 1.19 MW

    Still can´t trust the company, Trevor was not the only one involved in the scam but he was the only person charged. Someone else at Nikola must have known about the fraud and is still there.

    Hi Sandy! I would first like to say how much I love your channel. I agree with you, on so many of the things you say. Sandy, I know that you are looking for more and more knowledge, so please accept this nugget. Hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles will not ever match BEV's (or currently ICE too) on cost per km. I encourage you to look into the math behind the cycle efficiency for hydrogen (generation, transport, storage, and FC Stack to wheels). Currently 98% of all hydrogen is Black (fossil derived), which has a higher CO2 rate then if you burned the fossils directly. BEV are a no brainer. I will recommend one website to look up facts about hydrogen, Hydrogen Science Coalition. But there are others like Michael Liebreich's Hydrogen Ladder and many others (Clean Technica, etc) just follow the science and the laws of thermodynamics.
