So it's a modern analogue synthesizer, done centuries ago with bamboo and reeds? It's incredible!
no, analog synthesis simply emulates how physical instruments generate tones. They all work the same
If you look closely on the underside it says "CASIO - SH-ENG01 - MADE IN CHINA (C) 1890BC".
Kidding.
This struck me too - it has a sound palette that is very close to PWM Synthesis. Just listen to the "pling" - coin sounds in the Super Mario sheng tunes!
This is like if a clarinet had a kid with a harmonica
It’s more like that the harmonica is a child of this instrument
So that's how they make the music for Pokémon games.
The church organ of mouth organs.
HAHAHH
fabulous.... just coming across this uniquely instrument during the preperations for a new radio show about Harmonium in Indian classical music... the reeds of harmonium had been inspired by Shehn and developed in 1780 by Ch. Gottlieb Kratzenstein... a professor and nature scientist for maths, mechanics and experimntal physics. Beautiful sound this Shehn has and WuWei seems a real master on it... many tks for experiencing this.
Wow, that's amazing! I wish Eastern musical instruments were more accessable in the West.
holy moley they invented 8 bit music 3000 years ago awsome where can i get one of these
Amazing. I can't imagine the years it took to master that. Thanks for sharing this.
Looks like he's performing some earth-shattering cunnilingus
You need it , cause your brain in blokked in ass
making me uncomfortable
This is awesome. It sounds like a sawtooth synth with LFO on filters and ASDR envelope at times.
I need to listen the cantina song from Star Wars played with that thing!
can we do jazz with this ?
sounds ideal
Maxim Mee One Chinese band use it in rock n roll instead
My question is does it djent
It does can do with Jazz.

WONDERFUL! I was so surprised to see so much modernization placed for this ancient musical instrument! In Japan, since it was imported from China 1300 years ago, it changed very little.
Sounds like an accordian, and electronic organ, a harmonica. . . .and also like nothing else! Bad Ass!
absolutely amazing!!!
thanks so much for posting, for me as a harmonica player it shows me what the roots are!
This is cool, kinda reminds me of an eastern version of a bagpipe.
Can I please use this piece of video (‘bout 10 seconds) for my project? Thank you, I promise that I will give credit for you.
Great this amazing instrument with multiple harmonics and possibilities that mixes several sounds of instruments such as the organ, harmonica and accordion ...
I got a taste for a long time, on GarageBand to play with tactile virtual instruments on my iPhone and iPad to play 4 instruments: Erhu which is my favorite, Pipa which I like secondly , but also Guzheng and Koto, and I would like GarageBand during its next update to add a lot of these fabulous ancestral instruments of the rising sun, lol! I have already improvised beautiful contemporary music with these 4 instruments accompanied of course by other tracks with synth and others as violin ensembles etc ...
In any case, thank you for giving us several demonstrations of this amazing instrument that I discovered using 2 or 3 Apple loops, since I don't yet have the possibility of playing it because not available in virtual touchscreen, alas.
on the other hand I have a "Quena" a Peruvian flute very difficult to play especially when we practice little, but I manage it anyway and I put some in several of my musics and songs in addition to my Flute viola YAMAHA which I adore ...
NB. I also discovered a very beautiful flute with really a superb particular sound, it is:
"the Hulusi" wonderful this flute, I want one too lol!
For info, here are 2 of my music videos dedicated to the instruments of the land of the rising sun :

Salutations.

Many tks for the intro. It's nice to know there r more varied music makers we haven't discovered.
what's the weight of such an instrument?
Wonderful. I just saw Wu Wei with New York Philharmonics... he is unbelievable.
Fascinating instrument, but my cats *really* didn't like me playing this video.
I saw these at my local music shop but I hear you have to tune these with wax. Do they stay in tune or do you have to retune them? I know Accordions and Mouth Harmonicas usually stay in tune
Are there different Sheng in different tones, like the sax????
Nancy Marianna Muñoz Valera I know they do. I've seen them in G, D and F.
it's fine
Great video! What an amazingly expressive instrument.
Why is the mouth piece shaped like that? It looks like it's mounted upside down.
This guy is incredible! I have never heard this on this instrument before.
Xiexie!!
Grossartig. In Berlin?
How would I get started on this cool instrument?
By buying one
There's also soundsofasia(dot)com and chinesezither(dot)com (both run by the same people, why they have 2 different websites is beyond me). But their more focused on stringed instruments like the Guzheng.
Where can I buy a lusheng like that? Please tell me where it is.
Are there different Sheng in different tones, like the sax?????
Actually, they do! You can get the Traditional Sheng, Shown in this video, or the GaoYin Sheng, which has more reeds and sounds more lower if I'm not wrong, there is also a Sheng where you play it like a piano and its really low
actually, this is not a traditional sheng, as the original one was not chromatic, and also had a much shorter range.
The GaoYin Sheng is the higher pitched. You have Gao (high), Zhong (medium), CiZhong (double middle), and Di (lower), which correspond in western persuasion to Soprano, alto, tenor and basso, respectively.
Danke
Wonderful musician! :)
so i now understand the musical geneous inspiration source of Final Fantasy and all other amazing asian music..
Beautiful performance
interesting lesson! thank you! I love this unusual instrument!
I saw him recently with Galliano in France! Super!
Thanks, I'll check that out!
Thanks a lot mate, I'll check it out! Cheers!
This looks like a joke.
And I don't mean that negatively, the thing is fucking awesome but it looks like it shouldn't exist.
what's the difference between she chan ying and the hou chan ying?
황재인 舌(she )means tongue , 喉(hou) means throat , 顫音 / 颤音(chan ying )means trill.
Weiyou Zeng Thanks!
Would you please write down Quqi, Baohuashe in chinese character?!
Qu qi = 锯气 , Bao hua she = 爆花舌
Absolutly great !!
I am learning sheng in HK but the flutter tongue is really vwey hard. How can I learn it?
Legal !!! Parece o som do universo !!!
ancestor of the melodica?
Could be!
This is the coolest shit I've ever seen in my life.
amazing instrument
I felt my lungs tighten on that g to g’’’. Even though I knew he was continually breathing it was hard to convince my brain that
inconvenient harmonica
convenient cathedral
origindirewolf The sheng has the benefit of being able to play more than 4 or so chords, but for single notes at least they're around even. I'd love to try to play one of these as a harmonica player
This instrument can do the $6 million man sound effect.
You can find it at hobgoblin music instruments
That's awesome.
It's usually played in a mass.
A very interesting instrument, but his "demonstration" is lost behind the background music. I love to hear this. It's great!
what background music?!
Haha. Background music caused by a stuck video that continued to play in the background, which is no fault of Wu Wei. I discovered the problem later...
so versatile!
so "this" is what they use in mario and Starwars when they play, the "Cantana Band"
instrument ancêtre de l'orgue, accordéon, harmonica........
When they ask how extra you are
yeah!!!
Yiiii tiao daaa lu yooooooouuuu.... tong wo jiaaaaaaaaaaa
wow
A Chinese harmonica
I bought one:P way to difficult... and I got the instructions in chinese... witch I cant read

EvE Online intensifies...

Futurama got nothing on this
He looks like he's giving it a good ole snog...

Polyphonu
Play some blues.
Kissing machine
iksde
Yeah, same as blubbering on a woman's anatomy lol in the beginning it looked like he was kissing his mom. hahaha
Drevial Zerathustra Oh so how do you describe someone having a banana? Can we talk about something musical here? As a Chinese, I feel offended.
looks heavy. kinda sounds like a harmonica.
probably the least attractive sounding instrument I've ever heard of.
I just wish South Korean understand Sheng is the oldest Chinese instrument from China, Please don't steal it from us after you learn it in China and claim it's Korean traditional instrument. That's just the behaviour of thief.
That's awesome.
