Lots of good information about my favorite backyard bird! Thanks for the video. Purple Martins are very uncommon here in my part of Michigan. The majority of successful colonies in Michigan are located on a lake.
I love Purple Martins. If you have bugs around they are the best Birds to have if you are outside. Ours used to come back and it was the Old Guys and you better get that house up and running or you would hear about it. We were along Lake Erie behind a big forest hillside and the Martins loved it. We do not have them here now but I do miss the Martins today.
As a child I was fascinated with the huge extravagant houses that people built. They were more like apartment buildings. That was in Manitoba. Of the places I've lived in Alberta there haven't been more than one or two of the large buildings. Will Purple Martin's swoop down on people that are walking near their nesting areas? Swallows won't give me a break when I have to walk past them.
It typically. They tend to be very tolerant of people. I think it is because of their many generations of being raised near people. Swallows will dive near you (especially when your mowing) but I’ve never known them to hit anyone.
Thanks for the video, I have a 150 bat colony House near my 3/4 acre pond and 80 ft from my back porch. Could I put the PM house between both which would be 40 ft from each? I have a bad beetle problem of on my 20 fruit trees but I'm worried the PMS might devastate my dragonfly and bee population so I'm trying to figure out if it's worth doing one? I live in North Florida out in the country I have a kingfisher and all kinds of birds I'm not even sure how many dragonflies I have I don't think it's that many as it stands. Mosquitoes come out at dusk more than the day here and this year they were pretty bad. I also have eight blue bird houses around the property which they flourish here.
It's crazy when you see the amount of money time and construction that goes into building these houses. They are usually 15 or 20 ft in the air and look like some kind of sci-fi movie. I would assume that these birds would be difficult to see 15 ft in the air and probably don't visit feeders so I don't actually get the attraction to see these birds?
@@dab7963 they are truly entertaining birds. They are masters of flight and chatter all of the time. Purple Martin landlords are truly dedicated to them.

They are incredibly beneficial birds. The whole swallow group is.

Thank you! Interesting video, thank you for being honest. I hope you have a safe and restful trip. God bless
Thank you Kathy.
See a bunch of old houses for purple martins but I don’t believe I have ever seen one being used here.
Neglect leads to house sparrows colonies. Ugh
Great information! Thank you, Mark!
Thank you.
We have a large colony here on our farm in Arkansas, but we never have mosquitoes

@@figerama9404 you certainly could add a Martin house.
Great video! I am excited for their arrival this year, I hope to be successful this year attracting purple Martins unlike last year. 🤞
Good luck!

I wish Purple Martins came into my region, but they don't. Fascinating educational video, though. Thank you 😊
They are not nearly as plentiful out you way and don’t really nest in man made structures. Bummer.
I am glad you are on a cruise and were not at the Kansas City superbowl parade.
So sad.
I'll send a picture in a little bit
Another great video as always❤
Thank you!
