Thanks for your in-depth review, super useful. Does this thing pick up sound from a decent distance away? Looking to record city ambience, traffic noise etc. I just ask because the leaf-blowing guy in your video came through the Tascam very quietly, though it seems he was quite loud to you in person.
Absolutely it is great at picking up ambient noise... the internal mics are/can be very sensitive... especially if you hold the device... so for outdoor recording with built in mics I suggest using a tripod to record or set it down... 😎😀😎
It would be nice to see a demo of the internal mics of the tascam with instruments (guitar, bass, winds, drums, whatever), maybe someone singing and playing. I don't think there are any musical demos of this device's different stereo configurations
This device does a great job recording any audio with its own built in mics but it is only a one track device so recording (let's say a band at a bar) with the mics in or out would probably produce the same basic sound in a music situation while pointed at the band. For that reason is probably why there are no demos as bands would be using a multitrack recorder so they could mix it later. 😎😃
I don't see why not as I have used my Rode Wireless Go with no issues for the mic input... the output should work the same to a Bluetooth transmitter/receiver combo...
This is great improvement in audio, I really like that lab mic attachment. That is very cool how your phone follows you as you record. The recorder is pretty good at recognizing the keys... wicked bands he played with

There is no way to set the recording length that I know of... it should just record until you hit the stop button... could be that your Micro SD card is full or corrupted if is stopping automatically... try a different Micro SD card (32gb max)
Nice review. I was just looking at buying one and found your review. It's the best one I've seen as far as hands on demo. Maybe a little too much time on guitar tuning lol. Not sure I understand your question... are you wanting to record lectures with the Tascam and then put them on your iPhone to play? ...or are you recording lectures with your iPhone already and want to play them on the Tascam? ...the later would defeat the purpose of the Tascam if you already recorded audio elsewhere...
Yes and it has more control than those mics recording standalone as in direction and input levels and low cut filters... plus you can hook up any lav or other microphone via TRS cable...
would you need to get an external microphone source like the little microphone thing you got or could you just use the ones that come with the recorder? for instances like creating a podcast episode? x

I've had the DR-07mkii for years, putting it on stage as I film bands from further back. I love the sound, but there's a big bug; the internal clock isn't accurate as when I line up the Tascam's audio to the camera audio from the first drum hit, over the course of an hour it drifts out of sync with the camera by about a second. It just takes a little time stretch to correct, but the ageing Tascam is starting to get frequent digital sound glitches and I want to replace it. Have you encountered this time sync error with the X model?
No never had any recording issues with my DR-07X (well had a LAV mic with a short but not recorders fault). There is no specific time clock and it just records the audio from start to stop... if there is a video syncing issue then would not be the sound file but the video frame rate getting out of sync over time especially if your camera is using a variable frame rate to record... What camera/settings are and what video editor are you using?
@@DAHCKRAM I use 4x Lumix GH5s cameras, set at PAL 25fps. Whatever fps you shoot at, the audio is still 48khz and it's the MP4 audio waveform that I use for sync. I've got the Tascam DR-70 4-track for XLR mics. Side-by-side test with the camera; that only drifted 1 frame out of sync over the hour. My DR-07mkii drifted 12 frames behind in the same test. The DR-07X turned up in the post today and the first thing I did was sync test with the camera. A clap at the start, a clap after an hour, 12 frames out of sync. I align and mix my multi-sources of audio (inc camera) in Vegas18, which has a great time stretch algorithm and you just drag it in line with the camera audio. Also, I discovered the 'digital sound glitches' were to do with the SD card in the Tascam, so that's fixed and the 07X is packed for return
Yes you can use the arrow keys to go from 435Hz to 445Hz... and yes apparently it was on 441Hz while recording the video as I must have the arrow button once (I am not a musician but I learned something from you today so Thanks)... the default is 440Hz...
@@DAHCKRAM - The magic frequency is 436 :) You can also flip the display when in tuning mode, so you dont have to look at it upside down. You learned something else. Cheers
@@TimPetersonMusic No it would just be 1 mono file. You can easily make it stereo or replicate channels and/or pan to make 5.whatever in an audio editor (Audition or Audacity) 😎
I just got my dr-07x and am having trouble with navigation. It looks like I can't make another folder unless it's inside the MUSIC folder. Is that true? How do I specify which folder a recording goes into. I recorded a file and now can't find it. Help.
Yes any folder you make will be underneath the music folder with a generic name. It will record to the last folder you choose in the menu browse function. You can create folders manually from the computer but they need to be under the MUSIC folder otherwise the device will not show them... I don't really have a need to make any new folders anyway as I simply hook it up to my computer as a usb card reader and steal the latest audio recording I need...
@@DAHCKRAM Thanks. I didn't know what folder I was recording to. I don't really like that arrangement. If I'm listening to music in a certain folder and want to make a recording, I first have to change to the folder I want, every time? That's a PITA
While I did not cover the low cut filter in my video the Tascam DR-07X has 40hz, 80hz, 120hz and 220hz low cut options. So the 220hz would cut out the most noise but would not necessarily be the one to use. It all depends on the current room or situation you are in. All you do is set it for the room you are in by plugging in some headphones and hitting the record button once and go into the menu for low cut and cycle up through each one until the background noise (ambient room noise, HVAC, and low rumbles) is gone... I hope that helps.
Your video was very helpful and I was able to buy the DR-07X. Can this device record a phone conversation? Can I conduct a phone interview using this device?
Yes it will record in both .wav or .mp3 formats. And yes you can plug in with USB and see the micro sd card to copy audio files directly to the computer. You also have the option to use it as a USB microphone. 😎
The gain is the input level that you see me adjust or check throughout the video... 😃😎😜 You press the record button 1 time which allows you to test and adjust (gain) recording/input levels and then hit the record button again to actually start recording...
@@DAHCKRAM Thanks, yeah I finally figured it out, they just dont call it (gain) so I got confused a bit. Zoom Hn1 calls it gain and had a dial right on the front. Problem was, it would move everytime you handle it, if you weren't careful, and go all the way to zero gain even, recording nothing.
No but is is pretty simple... you just hit the play button and it will play the last thing you recorded the left and right button cycles through the different recordings. The internal speaker is not that loud at full volume and is not meant to be... I never play the audio back in the device I just transfer to my computer and sync audio with the video... I am sure you could hear better with a headset plugged in but that is another thing I don't need to do either... 😀😎
I have used Tascam products for years and have been very happy with them... I have never owned a Zoom so I can't really comment on it's capabilities except that the mics are stationary...
I need your help again please..ok so I have made 9 different recordings all at different days and times..2 of the recordings I listened to then took the sd card out and put it in my phone then back in the tascam later and the files were GONE..also EVERY SINGLE RECORDING IS THE EXACT SAME RECORDING LIKE IT'S JUST REPEATING THE SAME RECORDING OVER AND OVER WHEN THEY WAS ALL TAKEN AR DIFFERENT TIMES..HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE AND CAN I FIX IT..THESE FILES ARE EXTREMELY IMPORTANT..AND ALL THE FILES ARE ALSO DIFFERENT TINES SOME ARE A COUPLE HRS SOME ARE 6 HRS..why and how is the recordings playing the same thing over and over
I would not suggest that you put the SD card you use in the Tascam device into your cell phone EVER... but only a computer to read, copy or play the audio files. The cell phone will create all sorts of folders that may create issues. I would only hook the device to a computer (with usb cable) and read directly from it or use an SD (Micro) card reader in the computer to access the files which are all located in the \music\ folder.
@@DAHCKRAM so since I already took the sd card out and put it in my phone dies that mean those 2 files that were on there before I did are gone forever..also when I put the Sd card back in I never took it back out since then and have made 7 different recordings at different times and they are all the same recording?? @@paularay147 Unless you manually deleted any files from the SD card all of the recordings will be in the \music folder. Have you looked at the card from a computer? If all of your recording are not there then either they got deleted or maybe the SD card got corrupted by the cell phone and they would be history. Also take note that a 32 gb sd card will only hold about 50 hours of .wav (555 hrs. .mp3) recordings so you will need to copy the recordings off to a computer before you fill up the sd card and then format it and start over.
@@DAHCKRAM I haven't tried from the computer yet..I never deleted anything from it..it's a 64gb sd card so it holds almost 100hrs..I have one wav recording and when I try to play it is says file failure something like that won't let me play the wav one and all the other mp3 files are all the same recording I can't wrap my head around how all of them I play is playing the same recording when they was all taken at different times and they're all different amounts of time too..why can't I play the wav recording anymore? I was able too at first
It does exactly that... when you turn on overdubbing it will mix whatever you record with the current track that you are on, you can listen to the track with headphones while recording. It just tested and it works but I don't really have a use for that as I mix everything in my computer... 😎😃😜

How come the guitar tuner was at 441Hz and not 440 ? Can you adjust the tuning frequency, to say like 436 ?
Yes you can use the arrow keys to go from 435Hz to 445Hz... and yes apparently it was on 441Hz while recording the video as I must have the arrow button once (I am not a musician but I learned something from you today so Thanks)... the default is 440Hz...
@@DAHCKRAM - The magic frequency is 436 :)
You can also flip the display when in tuning mode, so you dont have to look at it upside down.
You learned something else.
Cheers
Hey, man.. Was the result 1 stereo WAV file, or 2 mono WAV file which I could then pan them later on? Thanks..
You have the option to record in either stereo or mono in either .WAV or .MP3
@@DAHCKRAM mono mode is gonna give me 2 files?
I have never had experience with microphones, but does this mic work with cell phones? Or only computers and such
Yes the Rode smartLav+ is made for smartphones and can be used elsewhere. amzn.to/32LcjrU
@@DAHCKRAM does the tascam work with smartphones?
What settings did you use????
I always record @ 16bit WAV 48K Stereo... I don't see the need to go higher for what I do.
On the low cut, do you know which one cuts out the most background noise?
While I did not cover the low cut filter in my video the Tascam DR-07X has 40hz, 80hz, 120hz and 220hz low cut options. So the 220hz would cut out the most noise but would not necessarily be the one to use. It all depends on the current room or situation you are in. All you do is set it for the room you are in by plugging in some headphones and hitting the record button once and go into the menu for low cut and cycle up through each one until the background noise (ambient room noise, HVAC, and low rumbles) is gone... I hope that helps.
W.O.W.
yes
Thank you for the great review! I'm in search for a good device to record my live performance via line in ... Will get this one 🤍 much love God bless
Good review
Glad you enjoyed it... I really appreciate it.. Thanks for watching.
Your video was very helpful and I was able to buy the DR-07X. Can this device record a phone conversation? Can I conduct a phone interview using this device?
Yes and yes
Does it record in wav or mp3 format? & once I connect it to my laptop using the usb, can I just drag the files onto my desktop?
Yes it will record in both .wav or .mp3 formats. And yes you can plug in with USB and see the micro sd card to copy audio files directly to the computer. You also have the option to use it as a USB microphone. 😎
@@DAHCKRAM Amazing, sounds like a good purchase. And thank you for the quick response, you’ve got a new sub 🤘
How do you get you phone to follow you?
It was on a DJI Osmo 3 gimbal... Now they have a version 4 which I still have yet to open mine... amzn.to/33NhZlB
Will it work if you don't have an sd card and try to use it just like a connection to capture the sound but not store it in an sd?
No there is no internal memory and you must use a micro SD card up to 32 GB.
@@DAHCKRAM thanks, that might be why it isn't working when I try to plug it into my device
How do you adjust the gain?
The gain is the input level that you see me adjust or check throughout the video... 😃😎😜 You press the record button 1 time which allows you to test and adjust (gain) recording/input levels and then hit the record button again to actually start recording...
@@DAHCKRAM
Thanks, yeah I finally figured it out, they just dont call it (gain) so I got confused a bit. Zoom Hn1 calls it gain and had a dial right on the front. Problem was, it would move everytime you handle it, if you weren't careful, and go all the way to zero gain even, recording nothing.
you never said how to play back a recording
No but is is pretty simple... you just hit the play button and it will play the last thing you recorded the left and right button cycles through the different recordings. The internal speaker is not that loud at full volume and is not meant to be... I never play the audio back in the device I just transfer to my computer and sync audio with the video... I am sure you could hear better with a headset plugged in but that is another thing I don't need to do either... 😀😎
Hi! Dr07x or. Zoom h1n?
I have used Tascam products for years and have been very happy with them... I have never owned a Zoom so I can't really comment on it's capabilities except that the mics are stationary...
@@DAHCKRAM I was going to buy the h1N until I saw your review. Being able to do AB as well as XY was a clincher for me!
Every recording was taken at a different time and day but all of them are the same recording j just don't understand and need help..can I email you? Trust me I know this is creepy or weird but I'll explain everything through email or something more private..please..it's for me and my son
I was able too at first
@@paularay147 You must view from a computer...
my battery is drained even when its off?
Are you using rechargeable batteries? Low quality rechargeable batteries will drain on their own if not used enough.
@@DAHCKRAM i have tested both rechargeable and non rechargeable but they both seem to get drained
Overdubbing I saw and I wonder what that does?
It does exactly that... when you turn on overdubbing it will mix whatever you record with the current track that you are on, you can listen to the track with headphones while recording. It just tested and it works but I don't really have a use for that as I mix everything in my computer... 😎😃😜
@@DAHCKRAM Yeah, some of the things they put on it is as if they did it just to do it. No need of most of it with computers. Thank you.
Let’s get rid of these batteries. Never gonna need them.
(Immediately puts them in the Tascam.)
Incorrect... I said... "Let's get those out because we know we're gonna need them..." 😎😀
