Hi, Nick. Thanks for the vid. Tell you what, tho, rental prices seem astronomical. I get it that it's on the coast, but wow. I live in a relatively expensive area in a touristic city in the UK and a 3 bedroom 'vivenda' will rent for around €900.
@@ExpatsEverywhere yeah, wow, pretty pricy these days. My one bed rental (tho, spacious) flat near Cascais back in '97 was a few hundred euros (escudos, back in the day!!). It was a minutes walk from the beach and had a private pool. How times change.
Yeah absolutely, Portugal ain't that cheap anymore, especially in the Algarve and Lisbon. You can still find great deals in the interior and central Portugal though.
What a great video. Loved how you combined background info on Faro (much appreciated) and your interview w/Josh-one of many favorite TH-camrs in PT (BTW-think Josh looks better, like most, w/o his hat 👍🏻)! One of the options for living in Portugal permanent or short term to permanent is buying a boat. The cost is far less than a apartment and the salability is perhaps better. We left South Africa and moved to Australia in 2017. It was cool at first but this Covid kak has just shown ‘Straya up for the rule obsessed police state people said it would be. Now we’re looking for a place where we can just breath and essentially be left the hell alone. A friend of mine in Lisbon has said they feel that way in Portugal. What a really fun and insightful video. I noticed all the English words in the coffee shop. It's this common? I also like your aerial shots pointing to where you're at or going. Very helpful. We'll be in Faro for a few days, arriving June 24. Thanks.
Nick, Great interview. I also follow ex-pats everywhere. Nick, where do you live? It looks like it’s up high in the country but in the algarve. I want some nature and height but want to be part of a community…walk? Less driving? VRSA video was good. I was interested in this town but it’s an hour from a hospital. Hi! Super unrelated but I’m really curious about the lines by arrival in Algarve for EU citizens. I can only find information on people from the UK standing in lines for hours upon arrival. Do you have any idea if they stick the passengers from EU flights in the same lines? Thanks in advance!
Great interview and perspective. Exploring the “why” of a move. Appreciate the “saving more” concept. One of the best terms I’ve come across is economic arbitrage. Keep the videos coming! Giving us dreamers something to look forward to!
Thanks, Kathy. A lot of people that only live in their home country think about chasing a larger income, but at the end of the day, if you don't save it to invest it, you don't have much in the end. So once we started living abroad, we realized, we were making far less than our friends back in the US, but we were saving the same or more. Then we started to get better jobs and such and our monthly savings grew to where we could start to invest and then those investments grew. It's a snowball effect when you are wise with economic arbitrage. 😊 - Josh
You mention graffiti in Faro. Some things I look for in youtube videos when I am trying to get a feel for what a place is like are how much graffiti there is and how many of the houses have bars on the windows/doors. I've been surprised at how much graffiti is all over the place in the Portuguese cities. But not as much armor on windows as other places. My premise has been that graffiti = bored youth who don't have employment and so will be getting into all kinds of trouble. In other words, graffiti = high incidence of petty crime. The barred windows/doors idea is obvious - why put bars on windows/doors if you don't fear break-ins? However, maybe there are just a lot of artistic people in Faro and they are constantly painting any surface that is handy. These dreamers wouldn't dare conk you on the head and rob you so they can score....
We agree with Nick. And who knows how old this graffiti is. We're not saying it's frescos in Italy but there aren't too many tags we see that are with current messaging. 😁 - Josh
@@ExpatsEverywhere OK. Just to keep my Devil's Advocate role intact, then why the hell does the City of Faro or wherever let years old tag defacement stay up?
