This drone is faster than an F1 car.
Red Bull recently raced a Formula 1 car against a drone - and it wasn’t just in a straight line, it was around the Silverstone circuit - one of the fastest tracks, with the fastest corners on F1’s calendar.
It’s a circuit where Formula 1 cars are very much at home, a track where they’re 42 seconds a lap faster than a McLaren Senna.
But, in this race, the drone was WAY faster.

Reality catches up with Gran Turismo's replay chase cam. Rain makes airflow pretty.
yeah the rain made it look wild, it kinda looks like schlieren imaging tbh!
I was blown away by how pretty that was
0´21 ´4 somethink möre cözmiq then Fia dreck F| vFv
I remember seeing that. It's pretty cool. Maybe one day we will see live race broadcast using this view!
I think the main problem with that is safety. If that thing crashed it could litter the track with debris, or in the worst case it could lose control and crash into the audience.
Its been used in drifting competition live broadcasts before, of course with a more conventional quadcopter, but yeah
I could imagine all kinds of problems trying to do it live could bring though
I hope not drone cams suck
@@UngodlyFreakor hit the cars going 200 through corners
Also the live feed of the camera they're using is very low quality. Only the high quality video that saves onto a sd card or other storage would be usable.
I watched this redbull video when they released it and It was the most fascinating thing. Max's reaction about the perspective were right on point. It would be such a great angle to add to the viewership when watching an F1 race.
I would adore this camera being used in the broadcast
Would you adore it crashing in to your face in the audience at 300 kph? Because that's a very real possibility
@@mac2857 you seem fun at parties
@@mac2857just like the very real possibility of a car flying over the fence into the crowd 🙄

@@BwInNewJersey I disagree. We have no idea of the chances of the drone actually somehow doing that. Same as a car flying into the stands

@@Kalire21 both of them are dutch.

The distance isn't a factor in the delay. It takes 3us for light (which includes radio waves) to travel 1km. The signal could make the trip 10,000 times in 30ms. It's the onboard video processing, the network stack on the drone, the relay, and the client, and the client side video processing that take 30ms.
which is why they use analog video
@@sea_kermanSurely that's only for the drone driver yes? I'd imagine they'd use digital video for the higher definition feed to camera.
@@petergerdes1094 The video material we saw was certainly high-fidelity digital footage (but I am also fairly certain they didn't send that off the drone but just wrote it to a memory card for later offline retrieval).
@@L2M2K2 But don't they use this for live races? I don't see why they couldn't send it over a cellular modem..if there is a bit of delay with that ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
There are digital fpv systems that can transmit a live HD video feed. For this one they used a deconsteucted gopro for HD recording, and an analog system for piloting.
Impressive shaft length and girth of that drone
That's what she said

I work at a drag strip. There is only one type of car on the planet that out accelerate an FPV drone. Those are Rocket powered Dragsters. Not even Top Fuel can out accelerate an FPV drone. Top Fuel can run the 1/8th in 3 sec. A fast FPV racing drone can do it in 2.3 sec after another second has gone by it is already at the 1/4mile finish and on it's way back.
I love professional insight like this. Thanks, Bud.
i mean, the weight and size difference is massive... this drone is under 1kg. kitted out racing drones are even lighter. your dragsters are probably hundreds of kg.
really wished the engineer dude told us how much power his drone put out tho. the hp/kg would be a fun comparison.
@@alveolate Looks like they are using T-Motor F90 motors, which are rated for just over a kw continuously for a minute (peak power will be much higher). That puts a very conservative estimate at 4kw/kg.
@@alveolate he did say it was around 5 hp in another video, and it weighs a kilogram so its power to weight ratio is 5:1, which is INSANE. still not more than a top fuel dragster which has a ratio if 7.4:1 but i guess some is lost in transmission.
@@FlVEyou're forgetting the friction. The drone only has air to push through while the cars have ground to also work against it.
They used a drone with a transmitter relay... THATS SO COOL. Was wondering how they got signal across the track
A low-level satellite! Balloons have been used for this, BTW.
I suspect the relay was for the video signal
They used an additional relay drone operated by another team member hovering above all buildings, bridges, etc.
They need not have bothered really since they broke VLOS laws, might as well have just used a decently powered vtx and cut out the redundancy of the repeater and just paid any potential fine from the CAA, not that I think the CAA should be dishing out fines for people flying BVLOS, they should just butt out the hobby but someone has convinced an MP we will be having our weekly shopping delivered by drone within the decade so they’ve written such tight and convoluted regulations covering UAVS that anybody flying one is effectively breaking the law now as soon as the thing gets 50m away from you.
Formula 1 AWACS 🙂
All these racing drones are kind of a challenge. What most people don't understand is how different this is to fly than a regular "camera drone". 100% manual control, you have to build and TUNE it, and then race it! Only to crash, rebuild and try again. The tuning alone is a pretty hard process to understand for anybody not familliar with PID algorythms. I've been in this hobby since 2016, and even though i have it on pause for the last 3 years, this video made me so happy because I know how hard this was to achieve!
it surprises me how smooth is the footage with such speed
Keep in mind the camera shoots a much wider frame then software stabilizes a smaller frame within that.
This drone must be part of F1 broadcasting, I remember they used a drone in Spanish GP 2022. That was awful lol
Problem is it only has enough battery capacity for a single lap.
@@dadtheladUse it on lap one and maybe after a safety car and such for 1/2 laps
I remember watching slalom about years ago, and the drone crashed on the track. That's so dangerous!
No, this is a new drone.
@@dadthelad Probably even less than that.
This is why I drone race 😊
Great video by the way, slight correction on the typical racing drone. A racing drone is typically somewhere around about 275g without the battery and 550g with a battery.
The one featured is a DRL quad which was purposely designed to be heavier and slower to make for better racing for spectators 😊
Ya DRL is basically a flying school bus. Super heavy and slow
Interesting as always, Scott. Thank you for sharing 🌞
This is fascinating- there were so many factors covered in this vid that I would not otherwise have been aware of or considered. I really enjoy the vids that focus on the kind of bleeding-edge engineering that is found only in spaces like racing and aerospace (and military and pure science experimentation etc).
Cheers!
Wow, this is the best video on this drone! Really gave me a genuine appreciation for just how tough of a technical challenge this drone overcame. Thank you so much. RedBull should've just hired you to make this video. Honestly.
Cool video. Two of my favourite hobbies...F1 and FPV drones!
Having these guys filming actual F1 race or qualification would be brilliant. Hope battery development improves significantly.
Scott, are you going to have a video about your trip to Utah and participating in the Off Road Games with MORR?
the images flying behind max and david are so cool
Hi Scott, I love the amount of detail you put into your videos. Would you be interested in making a video that details the evolution of the F1 car? If so that would be amazing. Thanks again
14:50 half truth. You can just rely on drag to slow down your drone, but more often pilots just turn around 180° and give it throttle against direction of travel. Pretty much stops the drone instantly.
I wonder if it would be possible to put some type air brake on the drone to allow it to slow down quicker allowing for a smoother shot? it might add too much weight to make it worth it but it could be interesting to look into.
I love how this channel covers way more than just F1.
And let me just point out, the drones you show at the beginning, the DRL ones, when you say they only weigh 800-900 grams, that's actually really really heavy for a racer. Idk how it goes nowadays, but I guess they can keep 5" racers at 350g or even less
DJI Minis are all below 250g with battery. I think they top out at about 60kph.
@@Mp57navy 60 is good for a dji..Thats slow for a racer

RC jet plane maybe? Or one of those crazy trick RC helis?
Love this Freudian drone though!!
RC jets can not maneuver nor vary their speed as fast as this drone, and helicopters aren't fast enough. I fly these things, I'm not pulling this assertion out of my posterior.
@aerialbugsmasher oh right - thanks man. So this drones configuration really is probably the fastest and most manoeuvrable vehicle you could want for the job of keeping up with an F1 car around a track.
When they were saying a team of people is used to operate it properly, I was thinking they were going to say one person controls the camera - but they didn't mention anything. Do you think it's fixed or has some auto tracking thing going on?
@@WillArtie From what I've seen only drones attempting to break speed records look like this.
The camera appears to be fixed, when they show the internals there's no gimbals or anything like that and if you look at the shell there's not much room for adjustment. It's really not needed as they know the angle at which the drone will fly so it's pretty trivial to find the optimal camera angle especially with a wide angle lens. It shouldn't vary much at speed. If you notice when it goes faster you see less of the horizon (it pitches down), when it's slower, you see more. A gimbal would add weight and complexity.
I think they're being overly dramatic with the whole team thing. The pilot is seeing the same thing as the film camera (albeit at lower resolution) there's really no need for a separate operator. I didn't see them get into specifics but from what I saw in the actual red bull video they are just there acting as support and coordination with the car and looking at telemetry and signal strength and monitoring the base station. From my experience that would be the trickiest part keeping a solid FPV feed for the pilot to be able to see the video signal well enough all throughout the track.
amazing piece of culture. thanks, man!
Designed in the Netherlands, but perfected with help from RB with their 3D tooling capability. Thank ypu for diving in all problems with drones.
lol stolen by dutchies, mr quadmovr on youtube designed this like 2 years ago and then everyone and their mom just stole the design. and then not even getting it good enough themselves but needing redbull team to build their drone. and then to have the audacity to call themselves dronegods its just pathetic
@@nfnworldpeace1992 Haha, so true.. also i can't hear the term "drone" in regard to our hobby anymore.. our image in the media is already bad enough.. don't need clueless people that just want to make money call all rc multicopters "drones".. don't want to attack you personally though as you seem to know what you are talking about, my complaint is aimed at the general public, content creators, etc.
That was sick for that drone
Awesome video and thanks for the reference 🙌🏼 By the way, our drone, Peregreen, does 0-300kmh in about 2-2.5s 🤩
Interesting piece of kit. I was wondering how does it generate lift? If the propellers are perpendicular to the ground, all of their output will be thrust, and no lift. The struts connecting the propellers to the body don't seem to have a wing profile, so no lift their either. Do they alternate the speeds of the top and bottom propellers, similar to the way that they turn corners, to move it continually up and down? If so, does it bounce like a Mercedes?
It just angles up slightly. This drone has a very high thrust:weight ratio, so you only need to angle up a little bit to stay at the same altitude.
Wonder if adding some flaps would make it more controllable around corners. Also. Could use them as airbrakes.
where can we hear the full interview you did with the dutch drone god?
This is a marvel of engineering, completely overshadowed by my immaturity and propensity to make phallic jokes ad nauseam.
8:55 I see you featured some VHS tapes for research purposes. Back to the Future's time traveling DeLorean is a topic of discussion. Also what appears to be blue Yoshi.
The tech here is freakin' amazing
If it propels itself forward, how does it keep having lift?
"It has a nose that looks like a rocket..."
Yeah mate...A rocket.... that's what it looks like. 😆
This drone could be use in future races for bird view following the cars and watched with VR sets
This is literally the F1 "Car" of Drones...very cool!
Great video!
Audio was good, just need a “pop” filter infront of the mic. My sub was having a field day
I want to see this drone race the course.
Amazing!!!!
Amazing work ...
I like many, only see a Weapon....
Why doesn't the drone pitch downwards when it doesn't have any wings? Do the bottom rotors spin faster to make it keep a flat trajectory?
I also commented this on the first video where the drone was shown... They REALLY need to name it "the RedBullet"
Okay so granted I know very very little about drone engineering. But I do know a fair bit about bullet physics.
An idea for a V4. If they had all the internals mounted in a gyro, and then had the body rotate similar to rifling they'd achieve much greater stability. They could also overcome now the complex algorithm needed for turning such a machine by mounting an additional set of blades towards the front which are fixed to the same plane as the internals which handled the steering.
Again I'm not a drone expert but we already know how to make incredibly stable projectiles and surely we could look towards that for inspiration.
Hell, if they possess the skills to programme such a thing you could mount the rear blades responsible for rotating the rig to a clutch system, then you could rotate the rear blades along to directional axis which would increase / decrease the rate at which the body spins. So you can then change which way the body spins dependent on a clockwise or counterclockwise circuit. Aiding corning to most turn and the ability to slow the rotating inertial to aid with the opposing turns.
Hell guys if you're looking to hire I'm available and not always free 😂
@@Dorench the issue with your reasoning is that algorithms and processing is cheap and mechanical complexity is expensive. That's the difference between a helicopter and a quadcopter, all the mechanical complexity and stability of the rotor head is moved into software, and you get a flying machine with 4 moving parts total. Betaflight can keep that thing stable just as well as gyroscopic stability could, and then instantly make it *un*stable again in order to turn, which your idea can't do.
Makes me happy to see this video, because I called Red Bull out on their BS when they made it seem like a race between an F1 car and this drone was close. I don't know why companies make us out to be idiots.
A design like (rocket fairing) that was in small scale production in Australia around 2016-2017 after drone racing got in after the US Drone Nationals in 2016(?) - the thing is though actuall drone racing is as much about manouvreability as they are about pure speed, so I think the design died as it was not really needed and it was a relative pain to maintain and relatively costly.
14:10 average fpv quad can pull more than 9 G's at really low speeds, air resistance doesn't help with how much G force you can pull.
Drone warfare gonna be lit!!!
Cool cool, when can I buy one?
it's not actually redbull's build, but the Dutch Drone Gods
Unfortunately I think the FIA would never go for this. To distracting for the driver, to scared about it crashing into the track.
The v3? ….Because the v1 and v2 rocket drones have great reputations for performance in GB. 😜
New crispy microphone is way better!
I was expecting a more exotic energy source like maybe some kind of non-rechargeable battery featuring better density or a tiny turbine and fuel. But I guess if you go the combustion route what you actually end up making is more akin to rockets used by the military and before you know it, you're in the weapons business... Then again, normal FPV drones themselves are roughly a roll of duct tape away from being weapons themselves.
I understand safety concerns... but I want these drones to be part of every F1/MotoGP broadcast from now on!
Cheers
I would like them to try to automate the following of the car, makes using these drones in a live race broadcast easier to do
2:45 the battery drained so quickly….
Who would've thought an airborne vehicle is faster than a land based one...
I can't wait to see the shock F1 fans will experience when they learn of the existence of hypersonic missiles 😂

I guess Redbull would be interested in having one of these drones for testing any of the new Cars
1:32 the "pilot" is wearing headphones instead of goggles
You're looking at the future of warfare right there.
Deployable airbrake surfaces at the rear FTW.
as expected, only redbull can beat redbull rn
Would airbrake flaps on the fuselage help the drone slow down? 🤔
Air brakes would really improve the breaking time of this drone, but the complexity would be insane
im currently working on a similar type of drone can you tell me where i can learn more about airbrakes
@@tr3x396 sorry i dont even have a clue
@@tr3x396 they are mostly used on fighter jets to slow them down. There also where so called dive breaks on some ww2 dive bombers. But the basic idea is just to fold out something that creates drag. Think of it as reverse drs. But i'me not sure if that would work fast enough. Is there a reason you can't just spin the blades in reverse?
These drones development needs to be continued so they can be deployed on F1 weekends to provide a new angle for the broadcast
finally, expensive f1 gameplay
Wow.. not bad for " a fizzy drinks company"

Incredible how fast something can be without a human inside of it, who would've thought 😂
No matter how big, strong and tough you think you are, a human is always tje squishiests part of the machine.
Nice Job. What I wonder, whats the diameter, length and KV of the motor and the pitch and diameter of the props are. Not mentioning the shape of the tips of the props. Sure every fpv pilot is wondering about this. And wwhat the hell is the cell count? 6S, 10S??? C Rate???
Make it a blade shape rather than bullet shape.
Increased aero turning.
Reduced drag, i imagine
A cylinder is a more efficient volume for packaging of course.
Just an idea
Laptime deleted, went many meters over the line.
Ultra fast deployable flight control surfaces. eg, a speed brake that deploys and retracts in 100th of a second.
Sometimes less = more. Did someone say DRS...
What kind of batteries are they using? We never hear about that. Still, it’s an amazing piece of kit. I just wonder how low can it fly and stay within track limits (we know how they are about that these days 😂).
There's no alligations for drones that's why
They raced Carwow and the pilot was just playing games with Matt
11:11 30 ms delay is 1/33 of second not 1/300 of second.
They should use these at the start of the race, it's a straight line, it should be safe to the drivers, unless it crashes down or gets hacked, but i mean there aren't any acrobatics needed.
If that goes well, maybe they can expand on that, as i'm sure it will become a thing someday anyway, can't go back now!
Once you learn in Phsyics class that Ek = 1/2 * m * v * v (Ek: Kinetic energy, m: mass, v: velocity) and heard on your favorite Physics-related TH-cam channel something about drag cross sectional area projected in the direction of motion something something, these comparisons between the movement performance of a little and light thing compared to a thing that is orders of magnitude heavier and larger start to appear to be just clownish.
Now, if you were to find a way to bend Physics and accelerate the F1 car in the same manner as it does while only investing as much/little energy as is needed for that teeny-weeny drone, now that would make me gasp in wonder...
The drone don’t have track limit though, it is overshooting pit entry chicane a lot, wonder how would the actual lap time be when track limit sort of extent upward into sky
Coming from flying the Mayhem 2024 Race (th-cam.com/video/8GtoHaic-vw/w-d-xo.html) - it would actually be super cool to see how close the pace on these could get with rapid pit stops with these to log a sprint race distance against an F1 car that doesn't need to pit... I suspect we'd still win based on pace (even if it had to be battery swaps, DR-1 showed those can be plenty quick), but as a showcase it would be pretty impressive.
To me, what's most remarkable (and silly) about racing like DRL that is feature highly is that those are basically flying bricks, and closer to spec miata racing than they are most other top level formats, but that is what's required to make the racing close - running unlimited hardware those samy pilots do stuff that will absolutely melt minds...
I think the "keeping between the lines" part might be another point for the car.
0:56 Dolph Lundgen
to be honest, all those plane against race car races have always had a big flaw. track limits. Those drones say they take the corner, but always go way off the track (i mean who cares right?). but if they really were to confined to the same boundaries they would be a lot slower. Again, if an F1 car could ignore track limits as well, it could go much quicker too
Firstly the navigation shud be done only by onboard computers then...they have to do a outlap ...2 timed laps and one inlap...against the f1 car...otherwise it dosnet matter...
I think these drones are nice! However in terms of safety say if the drone malfunctioned and fell on track could be too much of a gamble…
The thing that the F-1 absolutely has over the drone is range. The car will keep doing that for lap after lap where as I'm guessing the drone would crash after just over one.
