  • Sakura Haruno is one of the most polarizing characters in Naruto, but there are many great things about her character that don't get enough credit. In honor of her birthday, I thought I'd take a look into her character arc and the many positive impacts that Sakura has on the story of Naruto.

People hate on Sakura but all the progress she made was largely her own, she got to be close to relevant with Naruto and Sasuke entirely with training. No demon fox, no overpowered eyes, no super gramps sage. She trained in ways anyone in the naruto world could do. That's much more impressive.

After the countless things she’s done and accomplished she deserves acknowledgment. She’s the best female in Naruto. Also Kishimoto’s whole the story is that of an orphan who isn’t a really good ninja and comes from nothing rising up doesn’t really succeed. Let’s talk about Naruto, he is the son of two very powerful people, has so much chakra and the strongest tailed beast inside of him. He is not the character Kishimoto wanted to portray for having nothing to rising. Sakura’s parents weren’t even shinobi. What she had was her brains and chakra control in the beginning. Her power evolution makes more sense as a character who goes from nothing to amazing.

      @GoharioFTW ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@ThinkingAnime Hating Sakura has indeed just become a trope of it's own at this point and people just love to bandwagon in because they don't like to think for themselves. However, for the people who do have legitimate qualms with this character, it's very easy to see why.
The original commenter said her arc isn't about physical strength rather it's about loving herself and growing in her own way despite the powerful people around her. I can immediately tell people would have an issue with that line of thinking because this is an action shounen anime, not a slice of life drama. While this show obviously deals with more than just fighting and reaches pretty philosophical depths at certain times, it's not too unreasonable for the majority of average viewers to assert the 'power level and skill is everything' mentality since this show was based on that concept initially.
So with all that said, if Sakura's arc was truly intended to be about loving herself and growing in her own way, then that either means it wasn't written well enough for average viewers to pick up on those themes, or people reject her arc since it feels out of place with the themes of other main characters and overall story.
I think another thing that creates controversy around her "I finally caught up to them" statement is that we explore a lot more into the development of Naruto and Sasuke way more than Sakura up until they reach the battle with the 10 tails. There is this tangible linear growth we see from Naruto and Sasuke: Naruto learning how to apply wind style to his rasengan, learning sage mode, stealing chakra from Kurama to enter the nine tails chakra mode, Naruto befriending Kurama and using the full fledged Nine tails chakra with sage mode; And for Sasuke it's killing Orochimaru, defeating his brother and eventually getting mangekyo sharingan, learning how to use amaterasu, learning how to use Susanoo, defeating Danzo, etc. These are examples of when the audience is directly shown that the two have grown. As opposed to Sakura who didn't get as much screen time when it came to her growth and it seemed much more 'out-of-nowhere' when she claims she finally caught up. I feel like you can understand why it'd be so jarring to hear Sakura claim she's caught up to the other two when we have seen both struggle to get to where they're at while we haven't seen what she has done to get there (on top of the preconceived idea we have of her not even understanding her teammates at all already because of her previous actions).

Thank you for making this video! The way you structured the video was clear and easy to understand. I also really appreciate how you looked deeper into Sakura and her actions. I realised as I'm growing older, my appreciation for Sakura increases. I think a lot of her moments were very relatable as she makes mistakes, is emotional and self-aware but she's also inspiring to me as she was always willing to change in ways such as changing her views on Naruto and training to become a stronger shinobi. I believe her growth can also be shown in her love towards Sasuke. At first, she likes Sasuke because of superficial reasons. However this initial attraction develops into love as they become teammates and go on missions together (as Sasuke shows his more caring side when he protects his teammates and compliments her when she needed that confidence boost). Later on in the series (after they fought and sealed Kaguya) her feelings towards Sasuke develops into a more selfless form of love as she just wanted the team to stick together and go back to the good, old days. I believe one of the the reasons for Sakura and Naruto wanting to bring back Sasuke was because they both experienced the real Sasuke and his true personality when they were teammates (eg. Sasuke protects Naruto from Haku and tells Naruto to save Sakura no matter what.) and they both know that the Sasuke after killing Danzo was not the same Sasuke as they knew back when they were teammates. Sakura and Naruto both wanted to stop Sasuke from falling further into the darkness but Sakura also realises that she doesn't have the physical strengths to go against Sasuke compared to Naruto, who was physically strong enough to fight Sasuke and shared a similar past. I also really appreciate the fact that Sakura has grown so much in her own way throughout the series. I just love how by the end of Shippuden, team 7 became more like a family with lots of developments coming from each members as they overcame their struggles. Sorry this is kinda long but I hope more people can realise how Sakura's feelings for Sasuke are not unreasonable. This is just me sharing my opinion and I'm willing to change my comment if I've got anything factually wrong.

Sakura is a character I hate because she’s annoying, but unlike the bandwagoners in this fandom, I know she’s not a poorly written character. Yes there is a difference. I also hate how the Sakura hate has gotten so bad that people are putting the other female characters down, and accusing Kishimoto of being a “sexist” (And no, he never said he can’t write female characters, the quote “I’m not good with female characters” was taken out of context. When he said that, he was talking about making the girls look attractive.). Then they decided to put down other shonen women to keep the fake feminist hate train going. Why can’t people just hate a character without having to assume something bad about the author and genre?

I think she was done well already, she is very flawed but she learned from those mistakes. Her crush on Sasuke is a bit hard to swallow for some but remember she is a 12-16 year old girl in the two Naruto series, I know people who are in their mid 20s who are still lusting after girls they never had a chance with.
The difference here is that this person did not infact go on life threatening missions with this girl, didn't train alongside her, or feel like a burden to her, it was just a normal crush.
Those things will make the emotions she feels for Sasuke stronger no doubt, and he did save her life several times, of course she'll feel attached.
People might no like her character, but that's what the character is supposed to be, it's how kishimoto wrote her. You might say she could have been written better but how? She is written as Sakura, no more, no less, flaws and all.

People who hate on sakura perhaps didn't watch a single episode of shippuden, I guess. Everyone who watches naruto for the very first time don't like her but if you still hate her after watching shippuden then you are just simply blind hating her. There would be so many people dead if it wasn't for her. Also her character development is something quite appreciable. She has saved naruto a multiple times and also the fact that in shippuden she was always on Naruto's side throughout his thick and thin. She said "I love you" to Naruto so that he forgets about his promise. Her intention was pure that she wanted to save naruto. I feel bad that so many young boys hate on her. Being a misogynist is a trend these days, ngl. Also the fact that it was her personal choice whom she picks between naruto and sasuke. I agree that people get mad because she didn't bother about the person who cared about her and was really dedicated for someone who didn't give a shit about her. But overall, she's a W character and people should stop hating on her. After Kunoichis like Tsunade, Cheyo and Konan she is easily making up on that list. Her character development is excellent and people must respect her!

I think you should read "Pixie of the Hidden Leaf" and analyse Sakura's version from that fanfic. The way she evolves in there puts perspective into her character, such as how she's the most human of the trio.
In the fanfic, because she gets better at fighting and has a sensei who is blunt about ninja work, even though she evolves a lot, she's also developing PTSD symptoms and some sociopathic tendencies. She only seems to behave more like herself when she's with Team 7. Outside of it, she feels disollusioned with some of her peers and has a harder time keeping some of her emotions in check. I'm afraid she's evolving at the expense of her humanity, making me realize how important being a medic is for her.
In canon, it's her way to help both her sanity and her peers. And in fanon, the fact remains. It's a good thing she shows interest in medical jutsu. I think she needs that to balance out her colder side.

      hmm let's see.
      Naruto Chapter 247
after they beat the bell Test, Naruto expected Kakashi to treat them but he ran away,so Naruto asks her,(its a date) and she agrees but jokingly says his the one going to pay, until they saw Shikamaru and Temar. She never refused because Naruto didn't have money.
And She doesn't see Naruto like that, she cares about Naruto as a brother, hell after he used his rasen-shuriken, and they had to go eat Ramen, Naruto was struggling to use chopsticks, so Sakura offers to help him 🤷‍♂️ or when Naruto was worried for Tsunade's coma, Sakura tried cheering up Naruto.
Only reason she lied to Naruto was because Sai guilt-tripped her into thinking all of this was just because of a promise Naruto made to her, Sai stated that a promise is like a curse mark, and he made her feel bad for making Naruto suffer, since he got his beat by Karui because of Sasuke, she didn't want Naruto to get beaten up or even killed because of her. It was all for Naruto Sake, but when youre all sad and broken you tend to make bad decisions, that was Sakura's state she was willing to kill Sasuke to fix her mess.
And Sakura putting her hands on Naruto is Japanese Comedy, it's Japan's culture it happens in every Anime and even characters within the show its just a character comedy trait, like Jiraya the prev, Sasuke the Emo, Sai the emotionss , Naruto the Naiv Idiot.
its not far to hate Sakura over something like that, which EVERY FEMALE in anime does the same thing.

    • @tasleem5677

@@raijin7793 Lol. Did you just try to lie your way out of this? They meet Shikamaru and Temari on the streets before the bell test not after. After kakashi escapes, Naruto realises he doesn't have enough for the two of them so he asks Sakura if she can pay for half of it to which she refuses and goes to a different restuarant. Naruto meets Iruka at Ichiraku.
It must be convenient for you to blame Sai for Sakuras actions. Sai realised Naruto was worried about Sasuke and wanted Sakura to help Naruto. You know what Sai didn't do? He didn't ask Sakura to emotionally manipulate Naruto and tell him she loved him. Sakura knew Hinata loves him. You'd think Sakura knew Naruto and Sasuke better than Sai right? Or that Sakura should have been the first one to realise how much Sasuke meant to Naruto after he got assaulted by Karui when Sakura just watched. She should have known Naruto wasn't going after Sasuke because of her. That she isn't so imports after all.
Also it was Sakura who thought she could actually kill Sasuke. She knew nothing about Sasuke or understand how he felt after Itachis death. She had no right to make the decision that Sasuke deserved to die. She didn't have the ability or the mental fortitude to be able to do it. And for that she left her friends drugged and unconscious in the middle of nowhere and later didn't think she should wake them up and apologize.
And just because something might be comedic to Japanese doesn't make it an acceptable excuse. Same goes for Jiraiyas perviness.

Did you forget me mentioning "Chapter 247"? In the manga
They beat Kakashi before they met Shikamaru and Temari, then when Kakashi ran away from treating them to ramen to talk about the Akatsuki with Jiraya
Naruto offered to take Sakura for some ramen and jokingly she says "okay but you're gonna pay" and when naruto was checking his wallet, she yelled for Shikamaru and Temari asking if they recognise Naruto, then they start talking about how everyone is a Chunin and Garra became a kage, **scene shift**
to Garra and his meeting, then Deirdara, and the their fight beings.
And INBETWEEN they go back to Konoha and where Iruka and Naruto are eating Ramen. That's what happens in the manga the source material which is written by the Author himself.
Sai told her that "it seems like Naruto still bears that cross of his promise to you, and that he is planning to bear it for the *rest of his life* " he told her that he doesn't know what she said to Naruto but it feels like what Sai has a curse mark.
Sakura at that moment at he weakest mental state of sadness, felt bad that she cased all of that pain
Im not saying we should go hate on Sai for doing so, i'm very sure he had no intention to guilt trip her, but if he stayed silent, she would've not came to the conclusion of going to Naruto and lying to him. It's was just a misunderstanding between all 2 of them, since Sakura aimed at the the memories were Naruto throughout the show tries to date sakura.
Even after she was exposed by Naruto, she went saying in her head "sorry Naruto" which shows a panel of her holding her tears on regret.
Sakura didn't come to the conclusion of killing Sasuke, the order of Sasuke's execution was sent by Danzo and approved by the 4 kage after he attacked the summit, She and everyone don't know why Sasuke doing this, since no one other than Yamato, Naruto and Kakashi know the truth. In that scene
Kiba questioned Naruto's decision and he almost spilled the truth but was stopped by Kakashi.
Again, its Japanese culture comedy, her hitting him doesn't affect the Naruto's mental or physical state and all the injuries he got are quickly removed from serious scenes since the Comedy is over
Sakura's punching Naruto over reasonable stuff she onced punched him for trying to take a bite of the gifts they left for Haku and Zabuza's GRAVES.

That medical ninjutsu stuff was absolutely nonsense. Okay so she saved Naruto by giving his heart a massage. Her sensei was a Fifth Hokage aka the 1st hokage grand daughter for crying out loud. It drives me insane. Sakura should be the baddest bitch in Naruto, not that "strongest kunochi" crap, but the ninja that walked all over shin, the ninja throwing hands against momoshiki with the boys, the ninja holding it down against pain until back up got there. Most of what you're saying in this video about Sakura I can agree with, but I was just mainly waiting for the Naruto love confession part because I believe that part is just objectively bad on her end.
    9:57
I'm sorry but that statement is very... off...
Even if she went about it the wrong way her motives were still good so it's all ok? That's a selfish way of thinking. Just because someone has good motives it doesn't mean their actions can be immediately forgiven. Scenario: If John Doe's best friend was getting bullied at school and John decided to kill the bully so his friend wouldn't get bullied anymore, would you still say they went about it the wrong way but the motives were good and so the situation is forgivable? Killing someone isn't as extreme as playing with somebody's feelings, but the point is that having good intentions doesn't immediately mean everyone else affected is obligated to comply with whatever is going on.
The actions anyone takes will affect other people in good or bad ways regardless of what type of initial intentions they had. And in this case, Naruto was NOT having that bullshit.
Even if you make the argument that Sai gave her faulty knowledge about Naruto liking her and that's why she felt the need to reciprocate his feelings; Is it really ok to tell someone you love them just to make them feel better at that current moment? Love isn't some tool or platform to mend something temporarily. What would have happened if Naruto actually did love her back? Sakura evidently didn't actually love Naruto like that so she would have had to break his heart at some point if they got together right then and there.
And this confession itself is SO fundamentally negligent and bad in itself: I find it incredibly sad that Sakura has been apart of Team 7 all this time and has seen Naruto grow so much and has fought alongside him as a comrade on several occasions and despite all that she needs someone ELSE (who isn't a very emotionally available person in the first place) to drop the idea that Naruto might be in love with her. And instead of taking the time to reflect on her own ACTUAL feelings for that matter, she IMMEDIATELY CONFESSES to him for HIS own sake? What kinda superficial love is that? You haven't had the foggiest idea of this man having feelings for you or vice versa and the instant someone else who JUST joined your team mentions the idea you're suddenly like "Yeah I've actually been in Love this whole time and I'm suddenly ready for a relationship so stop all of what you're doing and love me." She may not have said or meant that directly but it's very evident that Naruto and the others were receiving it as that. I mean Yamato was about to slap her if Kakashi didn't stop him on god lol.
    10:43
Wanted to make him feel better? This is already answered with what I said above but I'll reiterate:
Love, especially from a narrative standpoint, isn't something to be played with and dangled in front of other people just to mend a temporary situation. In other words, if you love someone, you ACTUALLY love them. You don't say you love someone just to make someone feel better about themselves (and if you do say it, that's just highly disrespectful since that is inherently NOT genuine love). Since Sakura wasn't truly in love with Naruto then her randomly confessing means she is straight-up lying to him. To say that she was just trying to make him feel better is selfish since at that point she's literally just playing with his feelings. Even if Naruto WAS in love with Sakura here, she'd have to be extremely self-centered to think that her confession alone would be enough to make Naruto forget about everything else that is going on in his life.
And besides, What does Naruto actually gain from Sakura confessing her love to him in this manner? Will they be in a relationship now? No, she doesn't actually love him. Is it going to bring Sasuke back? No. This confession has changed nothing for Naruto whatsoever. This whole confession is basically a non sequitur. To assert that this was supposed to make Naruto feel better would literally just be trivializing what he's currently feeling at the moment and adding more unnecessary stress to it.
With all that put together it just makes Sakura look and feel more negligent towards herself and her comrades. It makes her feel so disconnected from what is presently going on-- Not even from her perspective as a character but rather narratively as a whole.
Honestly, this kinda echoes back to when Sakura was talking to Sasuke about Naruto being an orphan and how she was making fun of it despite knowing Sasuke was ALSO an orphan. She seemed so disconnected from their realities in that moment and that was all the way back in the original Naruto series and now she's pulling off similar disconnected moments in Shippuuden. It's moments like these that consistently are spread across the Sakura's arcs and moments and all add up to create this preconceived notion that Sakura is negligent and useless and that unfortunately ultimately ends up overshadowing her few great moments.
    So yeah

Is there legitimate hate for sakura yes just like any other character in naruto but or nsruto the show it self but there is a difference between hating and telling the onjevtive truth. Sakura is great in the role she's in but when she go put her way to prove herself in a show of strength like the men she gets folded if she developed more as her as a character ok I can see the defense but sakura in comparison to the othe female side characters have shown the keast growth cause her whole entire identity as this strong female nin goes right out the door when confronted with sauske or anyone whose physically stronger than her male or female. Cause let be honest if konan wouldve fought saukra she would've had her head in her hands. And konan honestly should've gotten more attention and ye developed more as a tool for nagato/pain and shows support to naruto and on top of that is a soldier and tries to still help her friends out in the end. Karin to a certain extent showed some development in the story and had to ket sauske be him. Even though she was still head over heels for him she let him go. Sakura at the very end she repeated the same whining crying bs she did when saukse first left. And who was there to help her just like at canopy Bridge when saukse killed danzo and right there to turn to when saiske left the first time kakashi amd for sure naruto. As a character she breaks into her flaw from the beginning of part 1 and she doesn't really change frfr until she became pregnant and off camera got married. So in boruto she ok with him leaving and not coming back something even ino came to grips with when he was deemed a criminal for taking killer bee. She cried snd let him go dakura cried and held on until sauske says well she's persistent gotta give her this D for effort. Let's be real here.

I get what you're saying here, and her character arc and progression does get muddled when the story starts honing in on the Naruto Sasuke duo dynamic, however, with that said it doesn't change the fact that there ARE plenty of plenty of areas and fundamental parts of the way she was written as a character that just doesn't mesh with the story that well. You named 4 crucial things Sakura has done right. I and many others could name 4,000 things she did wrong. I could name a lot of things Naruto has done right, and I could name a lot of things Naruto has done wrong. Granted, he is the protagonist so he's given more screen time to develop as a character, but that doesn't dismiss the times that when Sakura on screen she is MAJORITY of the time getting shafted by her badly written character and doesn't have nearly as many good points to compare to. Just because she has accomplished some big feats (that can literally be counted on one of my hands) doesn't mean that there aren't crucial fundamental problems with the way she's written. It's like, if someone were to bring up how Hitler tried to institute animal cruelty laws and institute laws to prevent smoking in public and how he started development of the autobahn and due to all of that he should be respected. Just because you could name out 3 or 4 big crucial things he was apart of, it doesn't take away from all of the other central bad things that he created and was apart of. Granted, Sakura isn't Hitler, but this is just to convey the idea that just because she did a couple of cool things it doesn't just invalidate all the other the negative things associated with her character.

But there wasn’t as many compared to other main or side characters and also the way the way her dialogue is written and the way she handles herself towards her teammates is often one dimensional and manipulative. To answer your question directly, it’s a mix of People neglecting Sakuras accomplishments and issues with Kishimotos writing in general which makes her character ultimately feel disconnected and awkward in the narrative as a whole.
You interpreted this as nothingness because you immediately were looking for a “I hate Sakura” or a “I hate Kishimoto writing” when in reality it’s a lot more nuanced than that.

When I first saw this, my thought was prove it to me. Now finished I still dislike Sakura, she was rude to naruto a lot of the time; and thinks he was a brat when she didn’t understand what it’s like to not have parents or even with parents doesn’t understand a broken relationship with family through maybe other friends who had similar experiences. Naruto, and sauske had a lot of things they dealt with; while also showing their flaws that in many ways they overcome. Also I dislike her punching naruto a lot of time, especially at the times it was uncalled for; if things were reversed that she was naruto then she maybe would get how miserable it felt. For me hinata, and the other konichi has better character development even though I wish that kishimoto would’ve given more time to the others as hinata took a moment to develop. To me she only starts getting better, and developing once she is trained by tsunade (this includes the fight with sasori) that I feel her as a good character; and honestly I wish she was given her own training that developed her own jutsu that I think kakashi would’ve given if she asked. I kinda like her now more in boruto, than I did in naruto.

Kishimoto doesn't really compromise characters for the story she is never shown to be all that competent in battles due to no battle sense. She tries her best but she's just not cut out for the battle field and you can tell when it gets busy or emotions need keeping in check. Shown with the Obito scene where she hesitates because how confused she is with how good or bad Obito is. And tbf someone would have to be pretty bad for me to gouge their eye out zero hesitation. That gets criticism but it's in line for her character to freeze in a situation like that and people don't appreciate how quick Madara was in that scene. It's hard to tell with manga sometimes but these characters are super fast. Even if Obito could move the Kamui is the only thing that could keep up.
At the tail end of the war arc even Kakashi is kinda useless outside of Kamui. In terms of power she outstrips most other character being the same level of Kakashi who still is kinda at the mercy of Naruto and Sasuke to do the heavy lifting outside of their specific uses. As much as people have an issue with it Sakura is better healing and support than a fighter which goes with who she is. And as a healer she really holds her own extremely well. Cutting a hole into Naruto to manually pump his heart was a great scene where she is crucial to the story. Naruto would literally be dead without her.
Her helplessness also is something I have more sympathy with than most. At the end of the day she does have to rely on Naruto no matter how strong she gets. It's Narutos job to bring Sasuke back and she just has to sit there. Do all you can but when it matters most you just have to rely on others. That also extends to Kakashi who similarly is useless as their sensei. People complain about her crying and asking for help but I always liked those scenes. Naruto is all about those feelsy moments and I think they were well done. Especially the ones when Sasuke leaves it shows how tragic Sasuke leaving is. People really care about him but he just has to leave.

This is one of the most fair takes I’ve ever heard of about sakura. She definitely had a good arc throughout naruto but kishimoto made a lot of mistakes with her as a character. The main thing about her that I hate is her obsession with sasuke and I think she would’ve had an amazing character arc if she got over him and moved on at the end of shippuden. I think that her and sasuke’s relationship has always been toxic, especially the way he treated her. It makes me cringe. I get that it’s a huge part of her character and motivation but that’s exactly why I hate it. The fact that she forgave him for everything and he ended up not really being there as a husband and father sends a very bad message. In real life, their relationship is the type of relationship that traumatizes people and it feels like kishimoto either is okay with that or he doesn’t care. I find it to be one of the most toxic things about the naruto series, honestly. I know it’s weird but I would’ve rather she ended up with rock Lee. They had moments together throughout the series that it would’ve actually made sense, unlike most of the couples in naruto. It would’ve also showed that she went through growth in that she was no longer judging people superficially. She showed respect for Lee throughout the series that was for much deeper reasons than her shallow love of sasuke, who she only liked because she thought he was hot. It was never really shown that she liked sasuke for any other reason besides how he looked and they didn’t even have that many interactions at all, let alone very meaningful ones. She didn’t interact with Lee much either but she showed admiration for him when he was in the hospital during the chunin exams and I find that more meaningful than any singular interaction she had with sasuke that wasn’t negative.

Naruto is my favorite manga series. I grew up with the anime as a kid and as an adult who can understand narrative, character and thematic depth, I love it even more as a flawed but still brilliant masterpiece. However I still find Sakura a very weak character, at least in the context of this series. In Naruto, almost every main or major (even minor) supporting characters have a significant story contribution in character arc or backstory that gives you more context on how tragic and flawed this world really is. I believe she would be a fine character in another series, especially a romance. But in Naruto, what significant narrative or thematic contribution did she have? Even supporting female characters like Hinata and especially Tsunade added a new dimension to how cruel and truly sad the Naruto world is. With Sakura you can only say that she maybe displays the idea of her being hurt and torn apart by the actions and pain of others, since nothing happens to her directly. Is that really a compelling story contribution? Especially for a main character? I disagree.

    • @ThinkingAnime
      @ThinkingAnime  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

This entire video lays out her character arc and thematic significance. Relying on others, for example, is both a theme of Sakura and a major one explored in the War Arc, as are the themes relating to effort and perseverance. Characters (like Sakura or Shikimaru) do not require a sad backstory or have to all serve the exact same purpose to be good as long as they serve a fitting purpose for their characters and the story. And Sakura does.

    • @jairekambui7738
      @jairekambui7738 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@ThinkingAnime I agree somewhat, not everyone needs a tragic story. Shikamaru is a great character for a lot of reasons, but mostly because he has layers to his character and the fact that he has struggles and personal conflict. To say Sakura’s major development is that she realizes how she can support Naruto and Sasuke while understanding her limits and letting them deal with things she can’t handle, I dunno. Is that development? Sure. But It feels very weak especially for a main character, but very much in line with most female character writing in shonen.
Also, it just feels like she’s an afterthought, narratively. Naruto and Sasuke both meet with their respective Sannin in during the exam, under different circumstances. While Tsunade doesn’t appear until the next arc, Sakura barely says anything to her until after Sasuke retrieval. And why does she decide to even study med ninjutsu? Just so she can fill in her role as the Tsunade of their trio. Naruto has a great relationship with Jiraiya and Sasuke’s relationship with Orochimaru is interesting. Sakura barely has any relationship with Tsunade.

I think her arc is better than many other main characters, but if you don't, that's fine. What I dislike is the female character mindset, because I thinks its problem seeking behavior. There is a double standard in what type of "writing" people consider "good" for female characters, and it results in belittling good characters.

@@ThinkingAnime I just think it’s generally difficult to write female characters in this genre, shonen battle. People have all kinds of things they want from them and they can’t do everything, and in my opinion, the context of the series matters. You can’t deny that there are a lot of frustrating aspects of her character. If fans of Sakura say you can’t judge her for what she isn’t, I say why is it unreasonable to expect something more? Sakura has the personality and character arc of a standard shonen heroine, who barely feels like she really belongs in the series she’s supposed to be a part of.
