Great honest review. It’s disappointing that there’s so many cons but every easel has its drawbacks. Any DIY hacks you can share to improve the downsides in future video would be super helpful.
Thanks for this Wild, I'd been looking recently but ended up settling on a good wooden H frame. Let's not forget that Bob's easel was actually a step ladder that he transformed into an easel - so we probably shouldn't expect it to be that great if it's based on his original.
I really appreciate this review...nicely done! I want my canvas to remain solid and I took a french Box style easel and use it as a table top. I added some wood on the the table to keep the easil from sliding and then added some more wood to the shelf so I could paint the edges of the canvas better.....what I thought was an original idea of mine, "screws holding the canvas," looks as though others has thought of the same idea. I have to say, this really does help keep it from shifting. I do like the added weight idea....I may add a dumbell to the back of the box on the easel. Again....top-knotch review!
May I suggest either trying alien tape or 3M Velcro pads/tape. They wont damage any surface and should do a good job of anchoring the box.. If not go with a weight just buy a used one... since dumbbells are kind of pricy now ( Generally around a $1 per pound )
Great review. I'm buying a used one from a local artist that is a certified instructor but doesn't paint much anymore. I'm getting it for $125 CAD. I'm going to get my hubby to screw holes in the top section to lock it to the bottom and remove the wiggling. I'm concerned because my floor is not level to begin with, so I may have to get him to rig up some wood blocks to level it up. Thanks for the honesty.

Very informative. Thank you. I’ve been trying to decide if I want to buy the Bob Ross easel for a while now but have been holding off because of the price. Also I hate standing to paint. I’m so lazy. What easel would you suggest for a lazy sit down painter like me?
I feel ya - I love to sit, drink and chill when painting BUT learning to stand and paint is powerful for different reasons. But to answer your question... if you like this easel you can sit and paint with it. You can push the legs all the way in and sit and paint that way.... Or use a stool and paint at a medium height (very common BTW) 3 Alternative I would say look at are listed below: - SoHo Easel: geni.us/SoHoUrbanEasel - Meedan H Easel: geni.us/MeedenHEasel - H Table Top: geni.us/HTableTopEasel (never used this one but my friend as it, just a suggestion)
Thanks for the suggestion on the cinder block. I've had the Bob Ross easel for about 18 years...still holds up very well. I've added on of those plastic tool holders with the holes to hold my brushes and done away with the plastic brush cleaner in exchange for a regular painter's can that I secured to the particle board shelf in order to fill it with more thinner and avoid splash. Great video!
Dude! As a fellow wet on wet painter, I’ve been constantly debating getting the Bob easel. Thank you so much for this thorough detailed review man. It really put it in perspective for me. Keep up the great content and happy painting 🍻
@@WildCreates For now, I’m going to hold out a little bit longer. My easel now is doing just fine with how I work. But I know I will get the Bob easel eventually. Just later rather than sooner. Thank again, pal 👍
My concern about the screw system holding the canvas in place, given that it creates 4 holes in the actual canvas material, does that run the risk of fraying and causing the tear to just run down the canvas and destroy the painting over time? Also, if a painting's sell value plummets due to rips and tears, would the little holes in the canvas from the screws holding it on the easel, count towards that kind of devaluation, or are those holes in particular, exempt from the typical "canvas damage" that concerns buyers? Thanks for the review, Wild.
Holes in wood frames and canvas material is actually very common with artist. From easels, to mounts to frames... these all can add wear and tear on a piece of artwork so don't worry about it too much. If you know what you are doing it wont ruin the piece. If you get the chance to look at the bad of professional art I think you will be surprised at how much of a mess it is ha ha ha If you are worried about the holes you can always make mounts that just press the frame into place.
I have to order some supplies for the improvements - So when those come in I can start working on it. But I would say maybe 2 weeks... just a guess though
I’m gonna build one now out of wood from Home Depot ! Fix the issues you advised and when I’m done I will let you know costs and send ya some pics! Thanks for the video I have always wanted to make one! The one I use now for over a decade only cost me 11.00$ bucks from Home Depot , tripod style adjustable from 8x10 up to 60 inch canvases. Can’t paint vertically but soon that will change thank you for the video brotha!
Thanks for the review. I saw a comment that you are talking with easel manufacturers - how is that coming along? Will there be a Wild brand easel incoming? Is there one already here and this newbie missed it?

Thank you for your honest review. The Bob Ross is my current favorite easel. i use magnets to hold my brushes and knives and plan to reinforce the shelf. I am interested in seeing you review pochard boxes. Small bolts in place of the screws give a fair friction fit for canvases.
What easel for Bob Ross wet style paint would you recommend? This one is to high priced. Need a sturdy on of course but new at this and not sure what easle would be good… thanks
To be honest it is tough to recommend an else that is affordable and sturdy ( sturdy cost money ha ha ha ). Take a look at the SoHo Urban H Easel: geni.us/SoHoUrbanEasel I think its one of the best starter easels out there
This easel is still decent if you just want to do wet on wet painting. I recommend a great easel in the video description of this video... the SoHo easel. I would love to do more easel reviews, but it take a little more time and money to do so 😜
Can you do please a video on reusing the same canvas over and over again. Bob Ross on one of his video say he practiced mountains on a canvas and then removing the paint and reusing the same canvas again. thanks for all your work.
I ordered mine and it arrives this week but after watching this I’m kinda regretting my choice. I really don’t like having to screw holes into my canvases!! How can I work around that?
If you are doing wet on wet painting I am sure you will like it. I am currently working on a video that corrects/improves this easel, which included the canvas screw issues. Hit that sub button to know when it goes live.
So for easels I wanted to ask you… why do u recommend SoHo and not Meeden or Mabel or US Art. The reason is I’m trying to buy one that would last and it’s good but not over 200. Thanks
While there are no big red flags with Meedan/Mabel/US Art. In fact they work perfectly fine and I own a Meedan and US Art Easel. I have noticed from my experience the SoHo is built a little better which makes it a little more sturdy ( which matter for my style of painting ). I have also had a issues with bolts wearing down which you can see in this video here ( th-cam.com/video/WvtWukNliwY/w-d-xo.html ). Bolts can easily be replaced... so its not a big deal... just more of a annoyance. I also love how the SoHo can fold flat. Which is clutch if you are short on space. I hope that helps. Let me know which one you go with.
I Generally recommend the Soho Easel ( geni.us/SoHoUrbanEasel ) If you click on the link you can see pics and a small video on it. I think it runs around 175 USD I hope that helps
Perfect. Well said. Exactly how I feel about mine. Especially the screws that puncture my canvases! Starting out I thought, o well, not a big deal...then I started using more expensive ones, and, NO. lol no bueno with the holes! But, I still use it, and prolly will whenever I can. Might come up with a rubber screw tip solution or SOMETHING, idk. Great vid man!
The screws work fantastic to hold it in place, but I agree.... I don't like to damage my canvases that cost a lot of money. Like I said there is a work around that I am sure you will love when I make a video on it - Stay tuned 💪
Even though I'm a Bob Ross enthusiasts I would never pay the price having so many flaws. Bob Ross company has been around since the 80's and I think their easel should be redesigned to be as good as their painting equipment, I own all the painting brushes, palette knives, and even the Bob Ross palette. I totally agree the easel is not worth the price.
I bought this easel a few weeks ago. No I haven't painted on it yet because I'm buying extra paint and brushes. I'd love to see a DIY hack video on how to make this better. No lie, I'm a little worried about screwing into the canvas. Great video and love the channel my guy. Keep up the good work
Congrats on getting it. I hope you love it when you start painting with it. Don't worry about the screws, they work fantastic for new painters.... Plus I plan on making a video on how to DIY improve this easel. Glad you liked the video and thanks for watching.
I would suggest mounting a wood strip on the top and bottom rails permantly where the canvas sets that has many small Brad nails sticking up through the wood strip and the one on the top sticking down. Like a bed of nails. This will stop the canvas from moving and hold it tight without much pressure. This will not damage the canvas edges if light pressure is observed when mounting it to the easel . Shouldn't require very many brad nails at all. Give it a shot!l
Wow been spending the last two days trying to figure out what easel to buy myself (new artist), I was kind of settling on B. Ross because of the 'no ledge' when working, but this VIDEO has saved me bucks! I'm considering DHJ-11:Extra Large Studio Easel any thoughts?
IS that model even for sale anymore? ( I can find info on it, but not much on anyone selling it ). If you are just starting out, I would go with an affordable, starter easel... and build up from there. I mention the SoHo Urban easel in the video description. I think that is a good place to start. I will link it below. I will be curious on what you go with... let me know :) geni.us/SoHoUrbanEasel
@@WildCreates Also, my reasons for both.. the A frame I love how my legs will have ample room and even place on the bottom, the H frame, no real leg stretching (if sitting) but I love how I could even put my ipad on top canvas holder... I'm 5, 9" and need ample room for leg, the dilemma is real lol
Wow thanks for this video. Very informative and helpful for me as I have been considering this easel and yeah a video on the different ways to fix the issues would be great 😊 Keep up the brilliant work bro💪💪💪
Very good observations, people who create easels as if they have never seen a painter who paints. Gap in front of the picture? How to make a brush stroke? (This is the only one on the market that fortunately does not have it). An unstable canvas, an unstable easel ... how to be creative, if I think something doesn't fall? if at least one manufacturer spent just an hour looking at a painter, they would solve ... but it seems to me that they spend a lot more time figuring out the price!
I really enjoyed this video This was a excellent video I did a Bob Ross painting tutorial before it was so hard I love his art supplies. It really cost a lot of 💰 I also watched his videos. Think you for this awesome video.
@@WildCreates I watched one today an buddy it is easy build th-cam.com/video/C3GPSL7SyXg/w-d-xo.html Let me know what you think, BTW did you read my question about brushes Because I missed up buying cheap till I learned that you get what you pay for now I buy only Bob Ross brushes unless you can put me on some good ones
I think I will stick to the hobby lobby h-frame. It is a quite nice easel for around $100 when you can catch it on the weekly ad. The biggest drawback to it that I have found is the absolutely useless assembly instructions that come with it. (if you are not the "handy" sort and have no-one around to help who is, I couldn't recommend it) I modified mine to hold a tablet or another painting above the canvas so I can have my reference right in front of me while painting.
@@WildCreates It is a really simple little mod. I just recorded a quick little vid of it for you. You'll have to pardon the poor camera work and voice work, I am no youtuber lol. th-cam.com/video/l7SHmxTkyzE/w-d-xo.html
Have you ever reviewed Bill Alexander products? My granddaddy only used the Alexander brand of products and from what I remember about them compared to the Bob Ross brand, Alexander is far superior imho
@@pameciauknyga157 that would be a comparison I’d love to see because from what I’ve seen in the art world when it comes to Bob Ross and Bill Alexander you only see Bob Ross which nothings wrong with that but the Bill Alexander brand has been basically forgotten and ppl really only know about Bill Alexander either because they knew about him in the 70s and 80s or you or somebody you know used Alexander products, like in my case my grandfather was an artist in Georgia and he used to teach ppl the technique and his dream was to become an Alexander Art Instructor but he got sick and started to teach it to me but I never painted before and now 22 years later at 28 I’m getting into painting and I’m buying supplies now to finally paint and hopefully one day become an Alexander Art Instructor
I have not yet. I started with BR when I first started painting, so I already have all the supplies. BUT I would love to review all the products I can get my hands on included Bill Alexander products. As the channel grows with more subs, more views, and people click on the links.... I think we can make that happen 💪
Unless you can get it for an amazing deal ( perhaps Black Friday or something ), I would say wait. I have recently started reaching out to easel makers. I wanna show more on this channel for artist looking to upgrade.
great review, honesty is the true mark of a warrior, i respect that;D well i been looking arond for an easel but at the end i just made on myself. its not an artwork or high tech, but it fits me in all my needs when im painting. i can fit every cavas i want at whatever height i want, i can sit or stand, so im happy and it costed me 0$ just some crap wood from a factory nearby. and some handy work, and there i learned im not a wood crafter... but, it still stand tall:D wild creates thank you for sharing the review, keep cool outthere:D
@@WildCreates dunno if its badass;D its very basic, ill send you some photo's when im done painting here, of the paintings and the easel:D and who knows , maybe one day, you design an easel, wild creates easel, love the sound of that:D take care outthere and hope the heat cools a bit down, here in belgium we had a few floods from huge amounts of rain that dropped i n a short time, a whole lot more then normal... im in a lucky spot here.
Just received my Bob Ross Easel. Both front leg push pins were damaged and unusable. Very disappointing. Shipping box wasn't damaged either. I think I can make this easel work anyway by drilling two holes and using bolts / washers / nuts to secure the legs even better than stock. Still, this quality control stinks. I wish there was a similar easel from another manufacturer out there but I can't find one. If I could weld, I would just build one myself with square tubing.
I couldn't agree more!!! For the money you pay it should be close to flawless. Even if you don't feel like returning it STILL contact the store... at the very least they should offer you a discount/refund on selling you a defective/damaged item. Trust me.... they will give you a little something back :) I made another video on this easel on how I fixed a lot of the issues. Give it a peek below... maybe it will spark some ideas for you: th-cam.com/video/bjvOo7cuPII/w-d-xo.html
@@WildCreates The vendor is doing right by me. They're not to blame, really. Your mods, and some of my own, are very helpful to improve the overall design.
Hey Wild, awesome vid. Unfortunately I purchased this easel many years ago and laughed about all the cons, true as they are. I would love to see a DIY vid to fix the issues. With respect to the mop and sweating your balls…just wait til you get older! Thanks for the vid and the laugh.
Always glad to educate, entertain and give ya a laugh. Seems like a lot of people are interested in the DIY/Fixing video... Guess I will have to get on that :)
Thanks so much for reviewing this. I recently got one. These DO NOT ship well at all ! I’m on my second one and its still damaged. Tons of scratches & dents. The shelf is also cracked. Now I understand what those screws are for with the canvas. Really stupid and damages the canvas. This easel isn’t worth the $ !
Glad you found the review helpful. I feel like the design and shipping are still based off when BOB started selling these (aka before e-commerce) they really need to do an update for todays market. Good news is, I plan on releasing another video on how to DIY improve the easel.... Stay tuned for that. hopefully that will make it worth your money :)
@@WildCreates I can’t wait to see the video on the easel improvements. I love your content and everything you do really helps me. Thank you and keep up the good work 😊
@@WildCreates Hmmm, maybe a thicker rug? The last thing I wanted to do was put a rug underneath my easel, thinking it would get paint on it. To my surprise, I guess my skills have dramatically increased because I've yet to even get a single drop of paint on it yet. I've had it now for almost a year. I agree though about the flimsy shelving BUT after putting all my supplies on it and filled the paint thinner bucket, it's actually pretty stable and haven't had any issues with it. I even used a Bungee cord underneath the canvas area and added my paper towels! I got that hack from you in another video, so THANK YOU for that! I hope you can figure out the adjustments needed for the legs... maybe after adding some weight through your supplies might give it more stability? Good luck! 👍
If I can find access to a thicker throw rug I will try it ( hard to do with my bachelor life style ha ha ha ). The shelf is fine... I just think for the $250 price point, it should be thicker and non-flex is all. Glad my paper towel trick was able to help you out... I will have to think of some others to blow your mind 💪
@@WildCreates I hate to deliver a punch here but I precise my easel for $180 on Jerry's Artarama... it was on sale. So yeah, I can see how that price/quality would bother you a bit. 😉 Yes! Keep up the fantastic videos! I 💜 the tips, tricks, hacks and informative information you offer. It truly saves me time, money and frustration! I always look forward to your new videos! You're awesome!!🤘
I have not seen this review before. I can not believe they would have you drill screw holes into your canvas Well, I guess considering Bob and especially Bill Alexander would run from the back 40 and do a superman dive into the canvas SCREAMING oh my Mighty Canvas I can see why they would need to make it reinforced.
Puncture holes are very common on easels.... However a lot of fancy easel holders are not screwing in from the back now... This way the holes are hidden. I will be doing a review on one in like a month of so.
All Bob Ross materials are expensive, thats the power of tv? I wouldnt buy it as its numb, and hogs too much floor space when not in use. Also its not disabled friendly for those who cant stand for any length of time.
It is expensive and does hog up a lot of space but worth it for certain types of painters that I mention in the video. It's a 2 in 1 easel so the top half can actually be VERY disabled friendly... You could also slam the legs lower for people too.
Go got it - I am sure you will make something awesome. The best part about your wood working skills, is all the awesome canvas frames you can build for your art.
Yeah its a real shame - it could be so awesome. I did make a video on fixing like 99% of the issues if you are interested in going this route ( th-cam.com/video/bjvOo7cuPII/w-d-xo.html ) I would really like to make my own easel and sell it to the community - so many cup holders and pin wheels on it 😝
If you only do BR style paintings it can be worth it BUT if you plan on doing other styles I would recommend something different... like an H easel: th-cam.com/video/xB1CD9yFFrM/w-d-xo.html
I did. which is why I tried it on multiple surfaces (hard and soft) and I tried it across 2 easels I ordered cause the first one had issues. So there is your jeez 😂😂😂
Im sorry to need to say this..but this is NOT ANYTHING like the painting Easel that Bob Ross used..HIS Easel was was a step ladder that he repurposed..nothing at all like this FLIMSY thing..you will pay alit of money..but get VERY Poor Quality for that money!
You are correct that his first. His first easel was a converted step ladder. You can even see him talk about it in the first few season. But in later seasons his would paint with his own branded supplies ( including the easel ). You can even see it here ( th-cam.com/video/ZHUdS0wEaKk/w-d-xo.html ) I do agree, the money you are paying for this - this should be a way better product. Its a shame it has so many flaws. I do talk about how to minimize most in this video here ( th-cam.com/video/bjvOo7cuPII/w-d-xo.html )
Great honest review. It’s disappointing that there’s so many cons but every easel has its drawbacks. Any DIY hacks you can share to improve the downsides in future video would be super helpful.

Do you have suggestions for easels? Is there other studio easels that you can recommend that don't carry the $250+ price tag?
I Generally recommend the Soho Easel ( geni.us/SoHoUrbanEasel )
If you click on the link you can see pics and a small video on it. I think it runs around 175 USD
I hope that helps
Perfect.
Its a shame they don't make this the best easel ever made. With a few tweaks this could be the best easel on the market BUT ATM its only Average.
@@davidlang4442 that's not a bad idea
Wow been spending the last two days trying to figure out what easel to buy myself (new artist), I was kind of settling on B. Ross because of the 'no ledge' when working, but this VIDEO has saved me bucks! I'm considering DHJ-11:Extra Large Studio Easel any thoughts?
IS that model even for sale anymore? ( I can find info on it, but not much on anyone selling it ). If you are just starting out, I would go with an affordable, starter easel... and build up from there. I mention the SoHo Urban easel in the video description. I think that is a good place to start. I will link it below. I will be curious on what you go with... let me know :)
geni.us/SoHoUrbanEasel
@@WildCreates yes it’s on sale via Amazon, thanks for link 👍🏾
@@spiritualstars send me the link - didnt show on my side
@@WildCreates Also, my reasons for both.. the A frame I love how my legs will have ample room and even place on the bottom, the H frame, no real leg stretching (if sitting) but I love how I could even put my ipad on top canvas holder... I'm 5, 9" and need ample room for leg, the dilemma is real lol
I need this easel in my life 👍👍👍
Ha ha ha - Make it happen.
The links in the video description support my channel 💪
Wow thanks for this video. Very informative and helpful for me as I have been considering this easel and yeah a video on the different ways to fix the issues would be great 😊
Keep up the brilliant work bro💪💪💪
Glad to finally bring it to ya.
DIY video in the works for ya buddy
Great review.
Thank you
I hope it helps you decide what is best for you 😃
Very good observations, people who create easels as if they have never seen a painter who paints.
Dont worry in one of my next videos... I will show you how to correct a lot of these issues
Great review, and excellent video. Made me decide not to buy, but love the Bob Ross paint, brushes etc
I am glad that the video could help you out 💪
I really enjoyed this video
This was a excellent video
I did a Bob Ross painting tutorial
before it was so hard
I love his art supplies.
It really cost a lot of 💰
I also watched his videos.
Think you for this awesome video.
Thank you! Cheers!
Thanks, I was thinking about this one but I saw homemade easel that are so much better and cheaper thanks, buddy.
Glad the video could help you out.
Good luck on building one... I am jealous cuz I would love to try and build one.
Thanks for sharing buddy.
I am sure I replied to your other comment - let me know if I didn't. I try my best to reply to all of them :)
I am glad you found an easel that works for you. I still love my H easel (cause its a multi-tasker).
I would love to see how you modded your easel :)
@@WildCreates It is a really simple little mod. I just recorded a quick little vid of it for you. You'll have to pardon the poor camera work and voice work, I am no youtuber lol. th-cam.com/video/l7SHmxTkyzE/w-d-xo.html
That is cool thanks for sharing and I appreciate the video.
The cat was the real star of the video 😜
Have you ever reviewed Bill Alexander products? My granddaddy only used the Alexander brand of products and from what I remember about them compared to the Bob Ross brand, Alexander is far superior imho
We insist on the review!
It will happen 💪
@@WildCreates thanks so much for information, learned so much from You!
I keep going back and forth on if i should just get it,,, i have an easel but its not this awesome one…. Hmmmm
Thats badass... Would love to see the easel that you crafted.
I would love to build my own, but I dont have access to all the tools I would require.

OP comment here
Just received my Bob Ross Easel.
Trust me.... they will give you a little something back :)
I made another video on this easel on how I fixed a lot of the issues. Give it a peek below... maybe it will spark some ideas for you:

Agreed its to much

And channel..😎👍
Ooops ...pocket..I ment to add.🙈
Thanks for the comment buddy and glad I can give ya an honest review on it.
To fix the leg problem, I added an area rug!
Tried that, sadly the legs are off just enough to were its still slants or wobbles a little. But I am working on a solution for mine

Just saw the documentary. Sad story!
Its a great doc with a sad end of event
Hi
Hello there buddy
Good thing Im a carpenter and building a wood shop, I'll just make my own easel out of wood.
Go got it - I am sure you will make something awesome. The best part about your wood working skills, is all the awesome canvas frames you can build for your art.
Yeah. No. Light weight, unbalanced, noisy, shiny/reflective leg piece o' poopoo, especially for the price.
Yeah its a real shame - it could be so awesome. I did make a video on fixing like 99% of the issues if you are interested in going this route ( th-cam.com/video/bjvOo7cuPII/w-d-xo.html )
I would really like to make my own easel and sell it to the community - so many cup holders and pin wheels on it 😝
Sounds like an expensive pos.
If you only do BR style paintings it can be worth it BUT if you plan on doing other styles I would recommend something different... like an H easel: th-cam.com/video/xB1CD9yFFrM/w-d-xo.html
Did you ever consider that the floor is the problem and not the legs? Jeez
I did. which is why I tried it on multiple surfaces (hard and soft) and I tried it across 2 easels I ordered cause the first one had issues. So there is your jeez 😂😂😂
Don't buy Bob Ross stuff because it has nothing to do with Bob it's just a use of Bob image that was tricked by Kowalski family and used to this day
I have a bunch of videos on BRI alternative that you might be interested in. Check them out :)
You can even see it here ( th-cam.com/video/ZHUdS0wEaKk/w-d-xo.html )
I do agree, the money you are paying for this - this should be a way better product. Its a shame it has so many flaws. I do talk about how to minimize most in this video here ( th-cam.com/video/bjvOo7cuPII/w-d-xo.html )
