I know I am late to the party but thank you for specifying the differences between the 650 and the 850. That is exactly what I was looking for.

What’s the difference between the reliability and
functionality of the GE 850 washer and dryer set and the GE Profile washer and dryer set?

Hi! I know I'm late to this party but I just purchased the 850 series w/matching dryer based in large part by this excellent review. I have a few comments for those considering the GE line. Firstly, I agree with the video that between the three, the 650 is the way to go. My dealer didn't have it in stock, so I went up to the 850, as mentioned. However, since this video's publication, there is a new GE Profile model (PFW950) positioned above this trio by GE Appliances. I regret not having purchased this upgraded washer/dryer combo. Although the differences between this new entry largely lies in its expanded software that offers significant features like being able to have the machine learn your preferences for each cycle, it also adds a much-needed moisture sensor to the UltraFresh System, so that it is based on dryness, not just time. Do yourself a favor and check out this one if you're considering GE.

Do you have to use the smart detergent dispenser, as family members use different detergents

You don't have to use the multi-load dispenser. You could use pods or pour liquid detergent each load if you like.

I just bought a 650, hasn't arrived yet. Though I'm starting to second-guess based on some horror stories. Though probably with all brands, somebody has a horror story. Some say the GE is loud, that isn't much of a concern for me. Some say they have had leaks or other issues and trouble getting GE to repair it. That's concerning. The other brand I was considering was Electrolux. But the GE was slightly larger, has the 50 oz detergent dispenser and the mold defense, so I picked the GE. But the Electrolux has 3 separate pumps and holds the door slightly open as its mold solution. Maybe I should have got it. I guess I will see...

Just bought this. Btw, it’s been replaced with a 5 cft capacity version that’s still 32” deep, the GFW655. Went with GE because of the service network and parts availability. Also, closet depth 32” D Whirlpools with pump filter access are significantly more expensive at the moment. More features than one really needs, but we’ve adapted quickly. Cleans well. Auto dispense is convenient, and the Ultra Fresh fan works well. Nice feature if leaving the door open doesn’t work well for your setup. We’ll see how long the Microban is effective. Hoping the washer lasts 10-12 years, but everything is garbage these days.

We have a GE top load washer and electric dryer. We dug up some old paperwork on this washer and dryer and found we’ve had this for over 14 years, and not one service call in all that time. Don’t know which will go first, me or the washer/dryer. LOL. GE makes good products and I used to give that title to Maytag, but I must be honest, this is a good product.

    Are 650/850 stackable?

For the 850, are the bearings upgrades on the drum shaft to compensate for the larger size? I’m concerned with. Bearing longevity so even if I don’t use the extra size, the larger bearings are a plus to me.

Have you done any follow up research on mold and mildew not forming on the new micro ban coated gaskets and hoses?
    Thank you

Currently waiting for my appointment with the GE serviceman to come and look at our new GFW650, which seems to have an issue when it gets to the rinse and spin cycle. I have tried a couple of different load settings, from Quick Wash, Normal and just Rinse & Spin with a variety of different size loads. Every time, during the spin cycle, the interior light will flash on and off one time, then the digital display goes completely blank for a few seconds, then relights showing :14 seconds remaining. This "loop" continues endlessly, unless I stop it myself. I think there is something wrong and will find out, I guess, when the serviceman comes next week.

No front access to the filter is a major design error

The lower front right has filter access for cleaning ... you should look at your owners manual for instructions.
