      Justin Berg It doesn't matter what art you study or what technique you know. What determines any fight is the individual behind an art. Pairing two people up against eachother from two different styles does not determine the effectiveness behind the style. All fighting is dominance and/or defense. You can be an extremely intelligent fighter and understand movement and still lose if you can't execute your attacks. People focus on different things in fighting. Fights are unpredictable, schools make them unrealistically predictable and they'll say the cliche "If he throws an open hook, I'll come in like.." its an "if" statement. Even if the person still threw that open hook who's to say they're not defending themselves still, or baiting the attack? You know what I mean? excuse the rant. Do not look for a perfect a style. Find ways useful, discard what is not, and apply it to yourself. in the end, only you can determine a fight and not your art.

    • @hinrichroll-naumann6313
      @hinrichroll-naumann6313 8 ปีที่แล้ว +66

      I completely agree with you. That's also Bruce Lee's philospohy and why he invented JKD. Only the useful movements were taken into account.
      But the reason most fighting schools teach like that is so you get muscle memory. When you are able to throw every punch and kick perfectly but fail to use them, they are no use, obviously. In a fight you can't think, you react. So if you are used to react with a certain combo to a movement pattern, you're better off

    As a former boxer and current trainer, I can say that boxing while incredibly effective, is a limited martial art. In a street fight with no rules, I feel as though MMA is closer to what one will need to be a complete fighter. Most street fights end up on the ground, or in some sort of grappling. If I don't knock you out, or at least stun you with a punch, I would be in trouble against someone who can wrestle or knows ju jitsu. There are many techniques in styles like Wing Chun and other traditional martial arts that just wouldn't be effective in a real fight. Adaptation is key for fighting, not necessarily some technique we need to stick to.

    • @KingEvans1st
      @KingEvans1st 9 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      but you wouldnt want to use bjj on the street cause u would get kick to death by the guy's friends. All martial arts is useless when a guy has a knife and most street fights aren't fair and square.

    • @AdamBlade17
      @AdamBlade17 9 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      In a real street fight you wouldn't be half-naked and you'd most likely be shot or stabbed to death. Saying that X sport is better than Y because it's more similar to reality is bullshit, they're all made for the competition in a ring.

    • @rcchristian2
      @rcchristian2 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      E Chu It takes 7 seconds to put someone out with a rear naked choke. Of course you don't want to be on the ground in a street fight but what if you were? Your Wing Chun is useless then.
      ***** knows that most street fights go to the ground. It's just the way it is. If your system doesn't have any ground fighting, then you will be worse off in most situations in street fights.

      alexcnz92 Alex, that is so true!

    • @rcchristian2
      @rcchristian2 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Darren Gilbert It's actually not.
      The UFC had no rules when it first started. A lot of people forget or don't know about this.
      You could strike in the balls, break someones finger, elbow to the back of the head and spine, stomp a grounded opponent, 12 to 6 elbows, use the cage as a weapon, and much more. You could pretty well do everything except bite and eye gouge... and actually biting and eye gouging took place.
      It was a gentlemens agreement that you wouldn't bite or eye gouge but a lot of people still did it.
      In the first UFCs Gerad Gordeau bit Royce Gracie as he choked him, so Royce held the choke on longer and Gordeau had to tap over 20 times.
      The cage was just a formality. It was a street fight and what ***** was saying is true...
      After the first UFCs the US military approached the Gracies and got them to teach it and incorporate Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in to their hand to hand combat regiment. Also Judo and Muay Thai.
      There is a reason why the US military uses it, because Royce Gracie dominated the UFC for years before people started to catch on that you needed either submission wrestling or brazilian jiu jitsu... or both :)

    Fighting is 20% physical and 80% mental. It doesn't matter what style you have..if you have the ability to outsmart your opponent, and expose him, all it takes is one mistake, and it's over. Anybody, and any style can be beat, if you are the smarter fighter.

    • @rickjay2011
      @rickjay2011 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Kevin Picton
      I agree. That's why I like JKD's philosophy about simplicity, and doing what is most effective to end a fight. Much easier to finger jab an opponent, or stomp their instep, or whatever to quickly get them out. Sparring is great to test your ability in a competitive sense, and you may be able to simulate some real life situations, but overall, it does come down to being willing to destroy your opponent, which a true martial artist hopes to never have to use.

    • @rickjay2011
      @rickjay2011 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @ConstantineShimanyuk
      @ConstantineShimanyuk 9 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Maybe, if the boxer isn't skilled. Boxing has more dynamics in legs. Wing Chung is more static about legs. Besides there are a lot of gaps in WC which a good boxer can use against. You wanna combine boxing with wc then its gonna be really a power. Plus if you add some traumatic combinations from Muai Boran then its really cool!!!

    • @ashketchum351
      @ashketchum351 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wing Chun principles are scientific, whoever follows them wins (even if its the boxer).

    • @ConstantineShimanyuk
      @ConstantineShimanyuk 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Nobody's argueing on that - WC principles are scientific (as well as the other combat systems like boxing, Muay Chayiya, Silat or others) but they arent't perfect as well and need improvements in terms of dynamics. even the stanse should be 50/50% weight on your legs giving you more opportunities and impulse rather than 70/30% weight backwards. WC is kind of "forward oriented aggressive attack" with weakness in terms of kind of going back mostly, and many other gaps that just NEED to be patched))) boxing ( though it is also not perfect) is reaaally good at kind of "smart-legs principles" going in any direction with more freedom and striking opportunities. It's really awesome that Bruce Lee saw imperfections in 2 amazing systems and improved both of them thus giving us JKD that I reaaaaally love and study hard))))))

    • @billmurray7676
      @billmurray7676 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Небесный Богатырь Your comment shows you know nothing about WC : we do have "going back" footwork, it's just that we are not encouraged to do that because we are not training for sports, to win points. We don't dance around, we get in, destroy, get out, or get out before it starts.
      And just try to hug me so you can reset range, there is no referee in the streets.

      Wing Chun gets destroyed by MMA, Boxing, and Muay Thai as seen by numerous UFC and street fight matches on youtube. Master Wong is different because he combines several styles that compensate for each other's weaknesses. A top Wing Chun practioner with no cross training would get destroyed by a Floyd Mayweather or Pacquiao in seconds

      Nicely put. Aggression of the fighter plays a big part too. In a street-fight, sometimes aggression trumps skill.

    • @Eastra3
      @Eastra3 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The more skilled you are, the more aggressive you are likely to be, because you'll see holes that the opponent doesn't even realize he's presenting. There is a difference between aggressive and out of control. People like to act like out of control is aggressive. Usually out of control people are aggressive, but that doesn't mean you don't have people who are in control and aggressive.

In fact, I think my country (USA), needs to make Master Wong, President of the United States of America. We will have to change the US Constitution--but we can do it. We will make it happen. Master Wong can commute between the two nations--running both countries at the same time. It would be a piece of cake, for him to do.

Two aggressive fighters that are determined to win with different fighting styles can pretty much hurt each other pretty bad. In short there isn't one over all awesome fighting style that trumps all else. Lesson? Good to know several fighting styles.

    I love how this both made fun of everyone saying that he should fight some random boxer. I mean, that dialogue would never happen between two well-honed and honorable men that know fighting styles. It would've been more civil if anything. Seemed like Master Wong and friends fired shots at everyone telling him to "go fight someone that boxes."
    But I also like how this is accurate. Both of them take blows and the boxer gets a lot of shots in, so really what it comes down to is just how stable and conditioned each fighter is. And how well-versed they are in their martial art.

      I personally think its better to master one craft than attempt to master everything- unless that is what you do for a living.
      I also think this idea that wing chun is an "incomplete" system stems from Bruce Lee not finishing his training and thus *needing* to invent MMA.
      Perhaps if he had actually finished learning what IpMan was teaching him, then things would be very different (for better or worse!) in the martial arts world :)

      This is true. But boxing does not represent real life combat. It's only limited to one range. Wing Chun is a very interesting art. An important principle is using an opponent's force against them. Adaptation or "Be like the water, my friend" Bruce Lee had roots in this style, but felt it's limitations. I can appreciate some of the footwork and punches in boxing but I see it as a sport and nothing more. I would not rely on it in real life.

    Master Wong has admitted on several occasions that traditional wing chun wouldn't work against a decent boxer, the whole idea of his system is to adapt the wing chun principles so they can be effective in a modern day street fight or mma match, it's obvious that boxing is the tried and true method however it's only a sport, wing chun if used correctly is designed to be a deadly art form. Overall it depends on the practitioner and the way they train.

    • @SampsoniteX88
      @SampsoniteX88 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** That's true but who wins a choreographed fight is irrelevant, I think what they want is for us to discuss what would happen in a real fight, this is an excellent demonstration however saying that wing chun won this particular fight proves nothing.

    • @SampsoniteX88
      @SampsoniteX88 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      So you're saying this has nothing to do with long lasting debate about wing chun vs boxing, if that's the case then fair enough wing chun won, but I think they want us to do more than just count the number of times they got hit.

    • @SampsoniteX88
      @SampsoniteX88 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      The description says it shows how wing chun can be used against a boxer, so some good things to pick up on is the footwork and hand immobilisations which are essential to bridge the gap, also take into account the boxers reactions as well as how the surroundings are used.

    • @mightymeatmonsta
      @mightymeatmonsta 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well Master Wong is NOT a traditional wing chun guy. He learned modified wc. Anything out of viet nam is modified and is missing key elements that make it work properly. Don't go by Master Wong's footwork. It is all wrong. He is using a LINEAR step in (that's straight in, straight into your opponent's counter, usually a hook). You need to use a circle inside a triangle, using an ANGLED STEP, stepping to the OUTSIDE of the attacking arm, out of reach of his counter (unless he has rubber arms or his arms are six feet long) and in great position for you to counter.

      The real usual wing chung that is represented nowadays is not the real wingchung used back then
      From experience I can tell you that at any very close range encounter that wingchung will absolutely beat the shit out of anything
      Not to mention that boxing/kickboxing has rules, wingchung does not and is more realistic in use then kickboxing would be

    It's a stupid question , it depends on the skill level of the opponent , the size and strength of the opponent and the stamina and conditioning of the opponent.so how do you compare ? If two guys same weight , one that has boxed for a year , one that has done wing chun for a year , I'm guessing boxer wins . Or maybe it's the one who has put the most into training and has more heart.

      w wallace the amount of power a boxer produces in there hands is absurd. Some boxers can produce a woping half ton of force with their punches. If the person hasn't trained and conditioned there's hands for it, there's a good chance they will break their hands on impact.
