10 Common Mistakes Bird Owners Make

  • Hello Buddies,
Although pet birds are gaining popularity, and owners are becoming more and more aware of what you should and what you should not do with birds, there are still plenty of owners that are making silly mistakes.
I'm really not going to waste your time with obvious things, that are pretty much common sense, like the fact that your bird should have a big cage or a healthy diet.
So this one is definitely worth the watch ;)

This Tap Water depends on the quality of water in your region. In Germany it is ok to either drink tap water or give it to your birds (as far as I know)

So true about what you said that when a dog vomit there is no need to take it to the vet because it's probably something he ate and it's also common in dogs

I have this problem where my mother takes the health of my birds lightly, when i still had my cockatiel i was seeing signs of sickness with him, and i told her several times to take him to the vet and she insisted everything's fine with him, and now he's dead. kinda scared that the same situation will happen again but with one of my budgies.

You can use humidifier or diffuser even with essential oil as long as it’s non perfumed. They helpful on hot weather and keeps the birds cool. Also, I think it takes a bit harder during taming if you let your birds out on their cage. Only let them out when theyre at least settled in.

In regards to not picking up your birds; I don't know if it's just a budgie thing, but my lovebirds eventually grew enough trust/bond with me that I could pick them up/handle them without causing them any stress or concern. My first lovebird even was able to perform tricks like rolling onto it's back.
It might depend on the trust (and species) of the bird, but gently holding/handing your bird I think is alright if you've built that trust with them.

Or maybe where I can find online vets?

Okay I'm a bit late to this video but I have an important question; So if we can't pet/stroke their backs, what about their front? I have parakeets that I sometimes pet from the front, is that kind of the same vibe as their back?

Hello I'm a new budgie owner and I need help on one thing: Is it good to have a mirror inside budgie cage? My budgie is stuck to the mirror all day, trying to kiss and beak it and acts very aggressive towards me whenever I move close, but he is very calm when there is no mirror. Some say they feel lonely and mirror helps because they think there is another bird with them and some say get rid of the mirror if you want your bird to get used to you. What should I do?

hey Salvador, I have 1 budgie (blue male) and he is very timid, he hates being out of his cage, and doesn't, like to try new foods, (he only eats birdseed) he used to be perfectly fine, out of his cage constantly but one day a visitor started hitting him with a stick, I was wondering if you have any tips on how I can stop him from being so scared? we were thinking of getting him a friend so he would be happier, would that help? if so what size cage do you recommend I get? (we are out most of the day) thanks

    • @eagletgriff
      @eagletgriff 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Do you really only feed him birdseed? I heard birdseed should only be fed sparingly. Its better to give him fruits and vegetables instead

@@bimbirobotics1050 That's common with birds on a seed diet. They like the seed so much as it is like junkfood to them so they'd rather eat it than healthy pellets and vegetables everyday. But, with some persistence and persuading, you can get them to change their diet to a better one that includes pellets everyday (Tops is a great brand of pellet), chop every day (a mixture of birdsafe vegetables, grains, nuts and some fruits, and herbs-bird safe herbs- can be added too), and seed as a treat food or for training. As for a cage, a flight cage is the best way to go for a budgie as they have lots of energy and need the space to play around whilst you are not interacting with them outside of the cage.
Natural perches can be hard to find in pet stores, and are quite expensive to get online, but you can also get branches from the wild from bird safe trees (that aren't sprayed with pesticides or other harmful substances for birds) and disinfect them via oven baking (200 degrees Celsius for around an hour), sun baking (which takes a couple to a few weeks I believe) or, my favourite, apple cider vinegar dissolved in warm water to scrub the perch and then let sun-dry (which, if on a hot day, doesn't take long at all). Only thing about the apple cider vinegar method is you have to make sure it is completely dry before use.
As for the visitor who hit the bird with a stick, I hope they got a good telling off. The bird might take a while to recover from such an event, but just be slow and encouraging with him and eventually he might get over it. But make sure not to rush him either, and if the visitor comes over again make sure to inform them firmly to either not touch your bird or become aware of the budgie's fragileness and show some respect for your animal. This is your bird, you are responsible for making sure other people do not do anything bad to him, and it can be unavoidable at times but I hope nothing like that happens.
Sorry for the long paragraph lol, the care of birds is a little hard to explain in a few short sentences for me. I hope you have a good day!
Small edit: Also never force the bird to change from a seed diet to a pelleted and chop diet, it can lead to the bird starving itself as it is not aware that the pellets and vegetable mix is food. Take it slowly and add it to the bird's diet bit by bit. Monitor your bird's eating. Does he seem to still only eat the seed? Has he shown any interest in the pellets/chop? If not, don't worry. It could take a while. Good luck!

@@tilapia8863 thanks soooo much, I will be sure to use these tips on my budgie. for the visitor unfortunately he didn't get in trouble and the parents were even rude to us, he is older now and still like that but he tried it again (hitting and kicking the cage) but I gave him a stern beating before he did could (he is now 14) unfortunately the parents tried to call the police but luckily he got in trouble instead for animal cruelty.

@@bimbirobotics1050 I'm glad I could help, and oof sorry about the visitor. Some people just aren't as caring towards animals as we all are, I can't believe that a 14 year old would still act that way to another person's animal. I hope you can find something to do about it, if you can do anything at all

    hey salvador
Im not a very great bird owner i use to own 2 budgies (Both male long time ago my neighbor left it in the scorching parking lot so we kept it
We dint let it out, we kept it in the balcony, one day my mom was cleaning the cage and the door suddenly opened, both the birds flew, the thin budgie flew away. but our fat budgie was hiding behind the plants, but we caught it later so 1 silver lining
So my mom and dad bought two new ones but now there was a bigger problem, they both were female (oof)
They started pecking around a lot, and later, they escaped trough the stupid walls, once again the green fat bird didnt escape
Then the story of a lifetime happend, We got 1 blue female bird and we kept the cage in the house and let it open everyday, only some days we wouldnt because of vacuming, drying the clothes ect, we trained it to get on our hand, It was close to a step up, The blue bird was great
and they both started mating, but one day, our green bird DIED, We found out it died from old age, and it always had a twisted leg, it was super slow, but could walk properly and fly
THEN we got another green male cause the blue one seemed depressed and im pretty sure it thinks we killed it, it wont come any where near us, When we got the green bird, it was the worst decision in my life, They started pecking each other LIKE HECK, blue bird got blood on beak and tail became super short, And green bird was helping the bird everyday to escape but if they escape this time dont worry they are in the hall or living room, the green one sucks its a bad influence and a bad friend, and if i open their cage they always go on top of my curtains and wont come back for 3 to 4 days and sometimes because of that chores are left undone
    Please help me out salvador
