I neglected my last budgie. I really loved him, but my own immaturity and his stubbornness made me give up. He died recently at age 10 and I felt incredibly guilty and sad. My sister got me a new budgie today for my birthday and I promised myself that I will honor my old budgie by not giving up again. I will pour my heart into raising this new one

My dad used to be a breeder and we had a big aviary and everything.
but one thing I remember, we never gave our budgies to people that weren't serious and didn't looked responsible enough to take care of a budgie, and it didn't matter to us how much they offered to pay or that they came from a long distance just to get a budgie.

That's good. If I was a breeder I would do the same thing. I hate how people get any sort of pet without thinking about the commitment and responsibility. They don't even go through the research about them either. But I'm glad that you did that. There needs to be more breeders like that.

That's amazing. He must really loved his animals and wanted to be sure they went to good homes. I know many bird rescue centers will even do a background check and home inspection before they'll let you adopt a parrot. It's a huge responsibility and often lifetime commitment to own a bird.

As a bird owner, I’m really upset by the third one. By the fact that I neglect my bird, I know it and I can’t do anything about it. We moved countries and our bird had to stay behind. My parents give him a diet of only seeds, which can be really unhealthy. Whenever I’m there I cut fruits for him but otherwise our servants who look after him keep forgetting. Another thing is that my dad won’t let him out of the cage because he gets really anxious outside the cage and starts biting everyone. And it really hurts because I love my bird and he loves me too. I don’t have much power in the situation and I’m doing the best I can to make sure he’s happy, but I’m honestly lost in this situation and I’m considering giving him away to someone who can actually care for him, though the thought hurts and my dad’s never going to trust me with a pet again

I've made a lot of mistakes with my birds in the past. Specifically, we allowed them to breed too much, which ended with the death of one mother. We had to surrender several of them because we just had too many.
Currently I'm struggling with providing fresh foods, since they seem to hate anything but seeds. But watching your videos has inspired me to try harder. I'm going to work on better enrichment and nutrition for my flock, at least more than I have been.

The thing about macaws and the like is that even if you have other birds and know what you're doing, they're a lot of work. That's my experience with my greenwing, anyway (she's nice, but actually *attacked* my dad bc he was trying to eat his own cereal. She likes cereal). Apart from that, she's a good bird, has a great diet (apart from the cereal that she mugs everyone for) and is doing really well with training. She's still not even a year old so no free flight yet.

I've been binging your videos over the past few days. I very unexpectedly got a baby budgie that my mum just couldn't leave in the shop and she surprised me with him. He definitely isn't unwanted though - we've been talking about getting another pet for a while but just couldn't decide on what to get.
I had a budgie when I was little and he was the best boy - always there for me. However, it's been quite a while so I definitely needed the refresher course on budgie care!
I had a small-ish cage (just your usual bird cage) laying around that he's stayed in as he got used to his new surroundings but I just built his new flight cage - it's huge! Got lots of new toys and plenty of natural things. Gonna start on getting him used to hands now and hopefully get him out the cage soon!
Thank you so much for the great videos!

    • @EchoGhost10100
      @EchoGhost10100 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

@MeganKugs oh yeah, he's enjoying life now! We got another male budgie from a family member who didn't really look after him well and the two hit it off immediately. They live together now and my brother really wanted to look after them himself (it was totally fine - they're just residing upstairs now and I already have a lot of animals to look after so it takes the stress of feeding and cleaning off me). They're in my brother's room and, since his door is closed practically all the time, they get free range of the room almost 24/7. There's a small cage on top of the flight cage so they can go between the two.
The budgie I mentioned above, Sky, is still quite the skittish little thing when it comes to people but that's fine - he doesn't need to come on our hands for us to love him. The other budgie, Sprite, does step up but can be a little spicy at times, though I don't blame him since he got little attention and physical interaction from his previous owners. He's still great and is obsessed with phones 😆

My first time owning a bird was almost 5 years ago. I was only 10 years old at the time and my parents didn't take good care of the bird. I wasn't ready for this kind of responsibility and because of that, I also neglected the poor bird (which I named Cody). We only fed him seeds and he didn't have a variety of toys. Cody had a partner but sadly she didn't live for long, because she was sick the day we bought her and my parents didn't take the illness seriously. We never got Cody another partner. We never spent any time with him and we would always have him in a room by himself. Cody lived for another few years before he died in June of this year.
It breaks my heart knowing that I treated Cody this terribly. I've never felt such guilt before and I wish I would've realized sooner the things I was doing wrong. I still beat myself up to this day thinking about the terrible owner I was.
I have two new birds now, and I've devoted so much of my time to them and I vowed to give them the best life possible. My parents still don't take care of the birds so I have to do it by myself, but I don't care. As long as my birds are happy, then I'm happy

Its a rant but I need to tell it somewhere, I spent 3 month just staring to my new budgie and when he was no longer afraid of my presence I trained him, after that he flies around the house 3 to 4 hours a day minimum. It's been like that 2 years so my parents were like, oh he's not gonna fly aways so they just left the bird outside when they went to work, they did close the window in the living room, but they left their window in the bedrooms wide open, the bird flew out. My parents didn't even bother searching for him and I didn't knew until I got home late at night since I was out in a friend's house. I posted online and printed flyers but guess someone took him in and decided to keep him and not return it (I hope, otherwise he is probably dead). The problem was that we got a pair, and the one that stayed home didn't want to eat nor drink and doesn't even chirp, so for the sake of the one that stayed, I bought a new budgie and she started eating a bit more and even started chirping again. It was fine the first 2 days, but on the third day I had to travel to another city to take my finals in college, so I told my parents to not put them in the same cage, to feed them and clean the cage daily and to not try to train the new one. I arrived home a week later and find the buggie really sick with diarrhea and couldn't even take him to the vet bc it died the same night. For them it comes down all to money, bc taking the bird to a vet is like 5 times more expensive than getting a new one. Not that they are extremely greedy, just that they don't see the animals life equally important. Those type of ppl aren't meant to have any animal at all. The new bird just died yesterday and the budgie that stayed is again depressed. I'm feeling really guilty to have bought a new budgie but didn't take care of him and also making the one I had more depressed.

I don't care how they feel about animals, they also know how YOU feel and should have had the simple respect for your wishes, your feelings and YOUR PET, a living feeling being. You should give your remaining bird to someone you can trust to be caring and dependable before they manage to kill this one too and don't get another pet until you live on your own away from these horrible, horrible people.
And you can have your revenge when they are old and helpless and YOU will be in charge of THEIR care. Let them know they should start worrying now.

I find all of these signs on my teacher, he used to scold me in online class when my birds used to make noises, but now he thinks birds are pretty and got like 20 birds of different kinds, he is really busy and his wife is pregnant, so he really can't take care of them. Two of his birds even died bc of starvation. He doesn't tame his birds and whenever he needs to hold them, he squeezes them to the point the birds starts crying for help. He gets birds to breed them and even asked me to buy some of the babies. I am a college student, I am already busy. I can't take care of more than 3-4 birds, so I declined. I told him several times that he should not have birds, but unfortunately the animal protection services here aren't the best and I can't do anything to save those poor birds.

they free roaming in my room with the cage being open 24/7, the female 1 specifically made it VERY clear they don't like being in there waiting for me to set them free for the day, she did that by banging the cage door trying to open it, & also just sitting there with that 1 stare XD
she's a huge diva, whenever they out of food she reminds me by annoying my dog to make him bark & not let me sleep at ~8 or 7am, is a hard & really annoying but really rewarding so much in seeing them so happy everyday

I am twelve and I feel extremely guilty about taking care of my parakeet, Freddie. I have been definitely neglecting her, not spending much time with her at all, and I have had her since I was about seven. I feel awful -- she's very untrusting and quiet, and always bites me when I take her down every once in a while. (I don't blame her) I'm making a plan to spend time with her every day, but it's just been such a long time I feel like a bad owner. I hope deeply that she's not depressed, as she hardly ever tweets and chirps, and I really have done an awful job with her. I haven't thought much about it, as she doesn't seem exactly unhappy, and my family actually worried about getting another bird in fear she would have an adverse reaction to another animal with her.I don't know if taking her out of the cage is okay, because we did that once or twice a few years ago and she didn't react well. I'm wondering if anyone has tips or help for better bird care and help me not to feel bad about this whole situation. I know I haven't done well and I truly want to do a better job in the time we have left!
Thank for any help or suggestions, and again, I feel terrible about this mistreatment of my bird. I have a really busy life and don't have a ton of time on my hands, but need to stop neglecting Freddie! I'm looking forward to bonding every day, even if it takes a lot of time! There's a lot going on in my life right now but I know I am doing a truly horrendous job of taking care of my budgie, and am working to change!!

But I can say that even if I bought them to play, I provide them with true happiness. Their food, water and snacks are all in a balanced diet and in proper times. They have plenty of toys. Their cage is spacious enough as well. So, I hope I'm not doing the wrong thing.

They are the funniest, cutest and lokale persons i ever met, and i couldn't imagine living without them. Also, my birbs live outside the cage. I let them out once, and now they can leave the cage whenever they want, except for if i have to tighten the fly screens in the window for example. They still can go inside the cage tho if they want some peace

    Question:
Are budgies and Cockatiels the same when training and taking care of?

    • @LooseVALVeAwayFromKeyboard
      @LooseVALVeAwayFromKeyboard 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Cockatiels can be very different in many ways. Of course, every bird will have a different personality, but cockatiels tend to be a little more high-maintenance as they tend to require more attention from their owners. If you bond with your cockatiel, then the bird will be very needy when it comes to attention, scritches, and time outside of its' cage. Budgies are prey animals and are naturally very shy, so they can be hard to hand-tame, but it is still important to make sure that any bird becomes familiar with your presence.
Most birds have similar diets, but might need more sustenance depending on their size. Cockatiels are much larger than budgies. It is important to make sure that you are ensuring that your bird's cage is the right size, as they need to be able to have enough space to stretch their wings and fly around, as well as having toys and their food bowls. You would need a very large cage for a cockatiel, compared to a budgerigar.

My grandmother adopted a budgie a few years ago, and when I went there last, the cage was filthy, the bottom of the cage was covered in it’s poop and it’s toys were dusty and full of rust. I asked her when was the last time she cleaned it and she said she couldn’t even remember when she did. I told her she needs to clean it and she just said she’ll get to it in the most “I don’t give a damn voice” . It’s sad knowing some people think small animals don’t need a lot of care

  • @robinhello9116

I had a similar story but with a different type of bird that I couldn't identify. I didn't realize that I was hurting it and thought that it was happy until I grew older and finally came to my senses. I truly don't think that I should own a bird ever again after I made such a big mistake. It also passed away at quite a young age judging from how long I owned it. I now have a different pet that isn't a bird and I'm currently trying to be a better owner and learn from my past mistakes.

I love birds, and even tough i am not a breeder i hate how people "care" about them. I've got 4 rescuees from bad owners and 2 of my own. I never set strict rules, other than sleep time and staying out of kitchen and bath and made my home as bird safe as can be. They can freely roam, have their own perches and plants (non toxic for them of course) and yet still linger in their cages most of the day.
Buut they also learned to open their doors themselves and i absolutely love how they do it.

For training budgies, are you suppose to have two separate cages for two different birds in order to train them? I wasn’t sure if this is okay if you’ve had a pair that have been in the cage together for awhile. Should I just have the two cages next to each other? I really don’t feel like separating them if I don’t have any evidence that it won’t hurt them. Anyone got any articles or Salvador Budgie, you feel like answering this one?

my mum refuses to buy a bigger cage for my budgie, her excuse: she used to own budgies. which just makes it more concerning, currently, my budgie has what most people call a travel cage. tall, thin, and unsuitable for playing and movement. I only allow him to sleep and eat in his cage, and have moved all his toys out aswell as some other food and water dishes so he can just have those when he doesn't want to go for a nap. I watched a few of your other videos, and was not aware that they should have a diet. I'm going to start with some of the tricks you showed on how to get them to eat fruit and veggies, I'm also going to try and save up pocket money for a new bigger cage and new toys.
